Ask me questions

Hey guys, I've decided not to do a book trailer. It's all the rage and stuff, but I haven't seen much evidence that it sells books and they're expensive to produce unless you do it yourself. I HATE the one I did for Lovers and Beloveds. The one I did for "Scryer's Gulch" still cracks me up but I don't think anyone's come to read the serial from that trailer.

So I've decided, on the suggestion of a friend, to try something different. I'm going to answer reader questions in a video blog of sorts--questions about my books or about my writing process, hopefully. I answer questions here on the site all the time, but I'm hoping this will bring out something different. I'm just gonna set up my web cam and my groovy mic and answer them off the cuff.

To do that, I need questions! Please ask me some here. I don't know if this'll sell any more books than a trailer will, but I think we'll all have more fun. Smile

I want to know ANYTHING you'll tell us about Teacher, the Traveler Queen and/or Connin. Or about all three of them. Or two of the three of them.

Should that fail (due to plot reasons and whatnot), I also wouldn't mind learning anything else about the Gods. I'd particularly like a Tremontine Creation story, but I bet that's too long for such a video.

I second the question about the Gods -- seems to me something, anything more about them might be really good to have for a reader just going into/coming out of Son in Sorrow. Smile

Also, how did you get interested in telling the women's side of stories? Who were some authors that got you wondering about the wives and daughters and mistresses and sisters of men in power?

I'd like to know anything you can tell us about Teacher. Specifically about his relationship to the Traveler Queen.

As I don't know how to do the spoiler thing I'm not sure of what questions I can safely ask.

How much do you feel you cut from the books before they publish, since you've said before you write "bricks" but I feel like I fly through them. Also, (trying to avoid spoilers here), but what inspired the drastic plot changes from the first draft?

P.S. can you introduce me to the Obbys?

There are a lot of very drastic plot hanges from the fist draft to the first book. Many of which as a long time reader are actually very missed. The book itself is great and flows wonderfully. But there are a lot of interactions that are now missing that made for a much deeper experiance.

A lot more Info about the Gods, Teacher, and the travelers would be very nice too imo. But I get the feeling that those are meant to be revealed as the books progress.

Yes, but don't forget how much 'original draft' material we had read through compared to how much has thus far been published. I can see the published forms settling into a very nice, long-ranged plot arc. And I definitely can't wait to get to the end of it.

with a way to ask my question with out really asking it. What made you change the thing with the Obbys? You know that thing that happened in the draft that also happened in the finished book. You know the thing toward the end of the finished book. The thing that was different in the draft. I think that's vague enough.

Also what inspired the language the Twins were speaking in. I picked up some French, I believe there was some Latin as well.

... Temmin's last encounter with the Lovers in SiS. But I'm not entirely sure myself.

I agree with Pikachu42 as regards to Bellesian(sp?) - lots of French influence on the vocabulary, but the grammatical structure seems completely different, which might be a function of their low social status as kids.

I don't know if this qualifies as a spoiler, so I'll put it in the tags just in case.

Spoiler: Highlight to view
Will we get to see Ilhovin and Macca (and anyone/everyone from The Queen Who Ruled by Herself) again? On that same note, will Sedra still 'commit' (I don't remember the right word) to Harla?

Oh! And, on a totally unrelated note, why is Winmer an atheist?

to know these things as well.

I'm not good at picking only one question, so you get three from me.

1. How much do you know about the history and lore of your world which is never going to make it into the books? Are there any random snippets that you'd care to share with us?

2. Sex is obviously an important part of the IHGK series, and to my mind at least, it isn't in there purely for titillation. That's a part of it, for sure, but I don't see it as the whole raison d'etre for its inclusion. I have my own thoughts here, but I'd like to hear direct from the horse's mouth: what were your goals and rationales in portraying sex the way you do?

3. The 8 Tremontine deities fit neatly into the 8 sabbats of the wheel of the year (and slightly less neatly into the 7 days of the week). I'm presuming that you deliberately chose this number and created them accordingly. If so, what made you choose the 8 gods and goddesses that you did over any of the other archetypes you could have chosen? From an in-world perspective, are there any other minor gods who have fallen by the wayside over the centuries, with their worshippers falling away due to vagaries of the calendar?

that the 8 sabbats of the wheel of the year, and seven days a week, aren't patterned after the Gods?

I've always assumed that the calendar on all levels was patterned by Eddin's Temple after the gods.

I do remember in the pre-canon that Farr had a son (half-son?), but I don't remember much more than that...
