Chapter 38 | The Tale of Two Kingdoms
Enchantments Various and Sundry
"What d'you mean, she knew?!" said Temmin, horrified. "I never did the least thing untoward!"
"No," said the Teacher, still gentle, "but when she'd flirt, you'd flirt back. You both share your mother's gift of empathy, it's why you've both been drawn toward the Lovers' Temple, and why you're closer to each other than either of you are to Sedra. Of course she knew. Temmin, child, it's safe to flirt with your sister. You both know nothing will ever happen, even if, very deep down, you both mean it. It's a form of practice."
Tears came to Temmin's eyes again. "Why would she taunt me this way, make fun of me like this?"
"She's not taunting you. She's behaving exactly as she always has. You're just aware of it now."
"No, not just now," said Temmin, shaking his head. "She popped out half-dressed and asked me if I wanted to help lace her in. That's not like anything she's ever done."
The Teacher was silent for a moment. "No. No, I imagine not." The fingers tapped on the mantle again. "We must, however, assume that she would never intend to hurt you. Which means your only available course of action is to talk to her, and I'm sure that's her intent--to force you into talking to her. I would hope you'd advise her to speak with her spiritual advisors while you're at it. She's trying to apply a Beloved's finesse and she hasn't the faintest idea what she's doing, she knows just enough to be dangerous." The Teacher crouched down in front of Temmin and took his hands. "Your highness, the main thing you must understand is that this is part of what the Lovers have to teach you. To know yourself and what you want means people cannot hurt you like this, even unintentionally. To be clear in your desires means you cannot be ridiculed or shamed, because you know your truth."
Temmin looked at his Teacher, vaguely astonished at this intimacy with his intimidating tutor. "Then why do I feel like this?"
The Teacher released his hands and stood up, smacking the prince gently on the side of his blond head. "Because you've been at the Temple for all of a day and a half, young idiot." Jenks came through the door with a food-laden tray. "Now. Have your tea and I'll see you in an hour. Talk to her soon." The Teacher strolled out of the room.
Jenks stared after the departing figure in black, then back at Temmin. "Why did he call you a young idiot? That's my job. Talk to her-who about what, your highness?"
"Nothing, Jenks, it's nothing. Just something I need to talk to Ellika about." Temmin poked through the tray on the table in front of him, snagging a thick piece of gingerbread.
"It didn't look like nothing, young sir," sniffed the valet. "And you've been acting oddly around the Princess since you got back from your overnight."
"It's nothing," said Temmin, licking the fingers of one hand while he poured tea with the other.
"So you can talk to that black crow and not me, your highness?" said Jenks in a falsely neutral tone.
"Everyone is so unreasonable! You said you didn't want to talk about it!" said Temmin in exasperation.
"Ah. I s'pose I did," said Jenks reflectively. "Well, I was wrong, young sir, you can talk to me about anything." He began to tidy up the room.
"Yes, well, everyone seems to think so at present and I have my suspicions," said Temmin, slurping his tea. "Though of everyone in my life you are the one whose advice I trust the most. Ellika's acting strange, if you must know. She's flirting with me."
"She flirts with everyone, your highness, even me."
"Excessively, I mean."
"She is?" said Jenks blankly. "More than usual?"
Temmin raised his eyes to the heavens. "Why am I always the last to notice?!"
"Because you're 16. Your eyesight hasn't developed past the tip of your nose. Your highness."
"Fine," said Temmin, "I'm a selfish adolescent prat. Yes, flirting more than usual! What do I do!"
"Have you talked to her?"
"Augh! Different advice! I wanted different advice!" said Temmin, throwing himself back on the couch. "And how do I broach that particular subject?"
Jenks paused in his tidying. "Well, from what you're telling me, she's trying to goad you into a conversation. So if it were me, I'd ask her if there was something she wanted to talk to me about."
"That's it?" said Temmin.
"With women, that's usually enough, your highness," answered Jenks. "There's always something they want to talk to you about."
Temmin gloomily munched on a lobster roll and rued the day he'd ever set eyes on Miss Allis Obby.
He ate the other lobster roll, all of a gingerbread, a large wedge of sharp barle cheese, two apples and a full pot of strong tea before the growling in his stomach settled down into a comfortable digestive state and he was refreshed and ready for the Teacher again.
"I do hope, your highness," said the Teacher on returning, "that you've eaten enough to get through to the end of this portion without gastric interruption?"
"Oh, just tell me what happened next!" said Temmin, opening the book.
"I suppose no one taught me any better," said Hildin. "Am I to fight you, then?"
"No," said Emmae, unnoticed beside him, "you are to fight me!" She took the great carving knife, aimed it as best she could, and with all her strength shoved it between his ribs and up before he even completely realized she was there. She sank the knife in to the hilt and pulled it out with difficulty, his blood pouring out after the blade; he backhanded her to the floor with fading strength.
"You bitch!" Hildin screamed. "You've killed me!"
"Warin taught me to butcher a rabbit," she cried, "you're no different!" He towered over her, covering her with blood as she scrambled back away from him as best she could. He drew his dagger, staggered toward her, then slipped in his own gore and fell. He did not get up.
A dark silver smoke rose from Emmae's body and spiraled away harmlessly into the air. She gasped suddenly, as if coming up for air after a deep dive, and got shakily to her feet.
"Hildin!" howled Gill in despair, and he threw himself at Warin, hacking away heedlessly. Warin waited for his opening, which came quickly. He struck a killing blow; the page fell at his feet, twitching. Warin wiped his sword on Gill's tunic and spat in his sightless eyes.
Warin mounted the dais, sheathed his sword and took Emmae's bloody hands in his. "Are you all right? Did he hurt you?" he said, wiping her hands clean as best he could on her already-ruined gown. He cradled her face. "Emmae?"
"You came for me!" she said dazedly.
Warin pulled her close, heedless of the blood. "Of course I came for you! Gods, nothing could have stopped me!"
She looked past him to Hildin's corpse. "Did I kill him? Is he dead?"
"Yes. It should have been me, but you certainly had the right. If I could, I'd kill him a second time for taking you from me--I'd kill him every day for a year!" He held her tight, eyes closed, his nose filled with the scent of her hair mixed with his brother's fresh blood.
"Warin," she said, pulling away from him. "I remember. I remember who I am. They told me I was Princess Edmerka of Leutefloss, but now I remember it. Warin, I remember everything!" Her face sobered. "I remember everything."
He leaned in to kiss her, and she backed away. "No. The spell is broken."
The Teacher suddenly doubled over in pain. "Your majesty," the Teacher gasped. "I have to go, she's too close, I'm sorry, I have to--" The Teacher stumbled to the nearest mirror, writhing in agony; the furthest parapet of the castle appeared and the figure in black stepped through.
From the back of the hall the Traveler Queen's voice rang out. "I'm sorry, but I had to come! I was here at the beginning, I had to be here for the end." She was bent in pain, but straightened in relief as the Teacher dove through the mirror. She looked up at the dais, and began to recite:
Blood shall be spilled and not his own,
The Lifeblood of the Crownèd King
Must needs be spilled to free his Queen.
"Hildin's blood has ended Emmae's enchantment. He was the crowned king, after all. Nowhere did it ever say you were to kill your father. Now, Warin, you have both crown and love."
The crowd of nobles cheered wildly. "Warin! King Warin!"
The high priest plucked the crown from Hildin's head, straightened, and approached Warin. "Your highness, you must." Warin looked out over the raucous assembly, closed his eyes in pain and nodded. He knelt before the high priest and the crowd instantly fell silent again. The high priest lifted the crown to the heavens, spoke the blessing, and placed it on Warin's bowed head. Instantly the hall erupted in shouts of "Long live King Warin!"
He quieted the throng. "I invite you to feast, in memory of my father and in celebration of my impending marriage to my brother's widow, the Princess of Leutefloss."
"Marriage?" said the princess before the cheers could start again. "I have agreed to no such thing, your majesty." He turned to face her in surprise and reached for her hands, but she would not take his. Her back was straight and proud, and her face was somber.
"But you did," Warin said, his voice breaking. "I still have the ring I got for you, here, next to my heart. We were promised to each other! I love you, Emmae, I would never have come here otherwise. It was prophesized--we always thought I would murder my father if I remained here. I have stayed away from my home for ten years for fear that might come to pass. Only you could have brought me here." Tears came to his eyes. "Don't you love me? I know that you did, once."
"I was Emmae then."
"And who are you now?"
Her face crumpled. "I don't know, I don't know!" she sobbed. "I just know that I can't go back to either life. I am neither Emmae nor Edmerka! No, Warin, please!" She held up her hands as he moved to embrace her.
"Can you ever love me again?" said Warin, voice shaking with tears.
The princess studied him with watery eyes. "I can't be sure that it was my heart and not the spell. All I can offer is to let you woo me properly. I can't promise more than that." She ran from the hall, unsure where to go but knowing she had to get as far away as she could, leaving Warin in the spreading pool of his brother's blood.
"You there!" cried a voice, cutting above the hubbub of the feasters. "What's this about you and my daughter!" King Fredrik was standing before Warin, red-faced and angry.
Warin sighed and wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. "I'll thank you to remember, Fredrik, that you're standing in my hall, not outside your daughter's balcony window."
King Fredrik deflated. "My apologies, your majesty, but you must admit this has been a very trying day for a father." Warin glared at him. "Ah. I must ask. What are your intentions towards my daughter? What is her place here in this court?"
Warin regarded the older man coldly. "My intentions toward your daughter, however we started out, are honorable. I love her, and when I say I would never have come back but for her I am in deadly earnest. I took this crown for her sake and hers alone. I will marry the princess the minute she agrees, but only if she agrees." He turned to a nearby page. "Boy, bring me wine, and see to my Traveler friends. They are to be given the best of everything, whatever they want." Turning back to Fredrik, Warin added, "We will talk more tomorrow. I am in no mood at present. For now, know that her place in my court is one of the highest honor as my brother's widow if nothing else. No one shall speak against her."
Warin dismissed the other king with a nod and walked to his father's throne, running his fingers over the ornate carvings. Though he was bloody, dusty and in rough clothes, he took his seat. A shout went up from the hall as the young page brought him a cup of wine. He toasted his nobles, and sighed deeply. This was not the life he'd wanted, but he would do his best to live it. If only he could win back Emmae's heart. It was the one battle he hadn't been ready to fight.
"All that," said Temmin, adjusting to the light in the study again, "and she decides she doesn't love him?! What is with girls, anyway!"
"If you entered into a relationship under a spell like Emmae's and suddenly found yourself released, what would your reaction be?" said the Teacher.
"I'm beginning to wonder if I'll find out," grumbled Temmin, standing up to pace at the windows.
"I'm sorry?"
Temmin spun on his heel. "Look here," he said, "you didn't enchant me to fall in love with Iss--with Allis, did you?"
"Are you in love with them?" said the Teacher.
"All right, fine, both of them! I don't know!"
"If you have to ask, you aren't. Remember that I can neither perform nor break that sort of magic in any event," said the Teacher reasonably. "That's women's magic, and only one woman left in all the world can cast it."
"The Queen of the Travelers. What, is that magic hereditary, too?" said Temmin. He picked up his spyglass and scanned the King's Woods. No bright caravans appeared.
The Teacher sighed, and said, "If Maeb had cast a spell on you, you'd know, believe me."
"So you know her well, then. I imagine your families have known each other, seeing as how something was obviously going on 800 years ago with your predecessors." The Teacher glowered. "But that's not what I want to know! Is it possible I'm not acting on my own wishes? You don't think that's what Sedra was doing with them that day?!" Temmin's eyes opened wide in panic.
"Why would Sedra want you enchanted?"
"I don't know!" shouted Temmin. "I don't know! I'm just trying to understand what in Harla's Name is going on! Why am I falling in love with a pair of twins! Why is Ellika acting like a slut!"
The Teacher looked over Temmin's shoulder at the door. Temmin turned around.
There stood Ellika, stricken.

Err. How are you going to get
Err. How are you going to get out of this, Temmy?
And thank you, dear MeiLin, for answering the riddle at last! Such a relief!
...now it's off to bed for me, and rereading in the morning!

Oh my Temmy... Whatever shall
Oh my Temmy... Whatever shall you do. I do feel for him though. The poor boy has been at court for such a short period of time and has gone from playful naive virgin to smitten w/ male/female twins *gasp, loving another man couldn't possibly be natural*, having been truly fucked up the ass, playing father figure to quell a fellow supplicant's deepest fear/desire, to knowing he desires being with Ellika in a way that even a member of the Lover's Temple knows is unnatural. His outburst is completely understandable. Poor Temmy. I hope Ellika will give him the chance to explain.
Mary Poppins reference...
I was just struck--I wasn't sure if the Mary Poppins reference (seeing past the end of one's nose) was deliberate, or if it was filtered through Sandman and deliberate, or if it just happened.
Also, I...wonder at Maeb, Queen of the Travelers...Any relation (etymologically) to Queen Mab?

just happened
It's a phrase that's been used around my house since forever.
Maeb, yes, etymologically related.
dun Dun DUN!
Ok, couldn't sleep, came back and read.... only to find out that you left us with more cliffhangers. Sheesh Mei, one would think that you wanted us to be on the edge of our seats constantly pressing f5. I'm not a refresh monkey of any sort, but I do find myself checking back for updates even when they're not scheduled. Of course, that could be partly because I use Firefox and just open all of my 'web-serials' bookmarks at the same time
That...was unexpected. I had
That...was unexpected. I had not thought it was Emmae that would kill Hildin.
Fatalist that I am, had thouht she would do something to herself... And now I'm doubly curious as to know what's between the Teacher and the Traveler Queen. I am sooo addicted!
Unexpected, but very much hoped for
I've been hoping for Emmae to turn her energy and considerable will power against Hildin and away from thoughts of harming herself, and here she is, killing him, to my significant satisfaction and contentment.
But yes, the story between Teacher and the Traveller Queen has me very much intrigued.
As for Temmin and Ellika, she gets no pity from me. His comment was not that far off the mark, and if, as Teacher suggested (and from all we've seen the guy is usually right), she's been knowingly and willfully abusing the Temple's teachings to rile up her brother, she deserves what she's getting right now. Temmin, it seems, is not the only one who has some growing up to do and can benefit from some more tutelage in the Lovers' Temple in the process.

Possibly
I'm debating on either that or Ellika's experience in the temple.
It’s so nice to grow up with
It’s so nice to grow up with your siblings. There are five of us in my family, all close in age, and all strikingly good-looking. I have never had a moment’s awkwardness with any of them, brother or sister. I suppose it comes from growing up together and for most of our lives, having to share a room. I’m so used to a brother/sister relationship that I’ve never even considered anything else. Poor Temmin, it’s really wonderful to have an entirely nonsexual sibling relationship, especially with the opposite sex. I don’t know what I’d do without my brothers.
Wonderful story, as always!
they did grow up together
They've only been apart about 18 months.
I think this isn't really the
I think this isn't really the sort of application of what he had learned in the temple that the twins had spoken about. I suspect we'll shortly see Temmin lose at least one of the rocks in his head. Possibly with vigorous and enthusiastic help from Ellika.
I see now why you wrote the original story about Emmae. She rocks! Although that ending has me wondering if there'll be more to her story afterwards.
Poor Temmin
He can't seem to keep his foot out of his mouth! Excellent job as usual, I don't comment much but this chapter was really fabulous so I just had to.
I admit, I wake up every day hoping there is a new chapter up even though I know the schedule. One day you'll be writing daily, I know it!
possibly
but not for many months. Right now the money just isn't there to justify the fulltime commitment. If I go fulltime on this, I have to arrange some kind of help with housework and kids. Right now, this doesn't pay for that.
I dunno
sometimes calling things the way you see them is the only way to effect change. Ellika's flirting is really bothering Temmin.
I don't know where I'm going with this line of thought, so I'm gonna shut up now.
ETA: I DO know I would never ask ANY man except my husband to help me lace up a dress.
There was a point to this narrative, but it has presently escaped the chronicler's mind.
-Douglas Adams
Am I alone
Am I alone in thinking that Ellika's revaltion was the same as Temmy's? If this is the case I supect that she's been waiting to talk about it for some time, so as to deal with it and move to a more heathy reationship. Maybe I'm reading too much into things.
You're not alone
The thought had occurred to me. It makes a sort of dramatic sense, and perhaps provides an explanation for her excessive flirtation with her brother. But maybe there doesn't need to be an explanation beyond her feeling safe enough to be that flirtatious with Temmin, and not seeing any harm in it.
In any case, I still feel as if I don't really know Ellika. I wish I'd gotten to see more of the particulars of how she dealt with Arta and Fen. But perhaps that wouldn't have been particularly revealing. The next chapter will surely tell us more about her.
sleep now
Chaper is good. am sleepy now. too much work cause breakdown in grammer. Poor Temmin. Happy mothersday to mommys everywhere. *passes out from exhaustion*

Blahh, poor Timmeh. He sorta
Blahh, poor Timmeh. He sorta did walk right into this himself, but at the same time I can see where he's coming from. AGAIN it also comes back to a double standard there doesn't it--women are sluts and men are conquerers.
And I *DEF* agree with Katie--I would NEVER ask a man to help me lace up my dress if I had a maid there doin' just that. It's just...-shudder- Innapropriate even if you *are* siblings. Actually, more so since there is no real nonsexual relationship between them since they did not have the chance to live together through time as such as they are now.
If any of that was English.... ^^;;

Emmae--for the win!
Courages, Emmae has dem
I'm so glad the final confrontation is over, Emmae has quite honestly suffered more than her share and needs some peace and quiet. Now we find out if Warin is man enough to give her the space she needs to deal. I for one, think so, and look forward to their (it damn well better be happy) conclusion.
And Temmin, dear Temmin, you and Ellika, you're BOTH young fools. What a pair. And the way that particular situation came to a head--I was NOT expecting THAT! Hopefully Jenks' being there will help, but they're going to have that conversation now, no mistake. When's the next update? Now? How 'bout now? No? Not now? How 'bout now?
Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common. --Dorothy Parker
I do agree, Emmae has
I do agree, Emmae has suffered greatly and in large amounts, but at the same time it was stated that only her *EMOTIONS* were affected by the spell--she had control of her heart at all times, and therefore really was in love with Warin. Or so it seemed. I want them together so bad D: Like, srsly. They just seemed so very sweet and -sigh- Iunno.
I also wonder if Edmerka is going to revert to her previous self or maintain the personality that she has had in this section of her life, as Emmae. I hope she doesn't go back, or things will likely be bad

Hooray! Wait, what?
Thoughts:
Emmae is full of win for killing Hildin. Absolutely.
I thought that Emmae had fallen in love with Warin of her own volition, rather than the spell. But, a captor who treats you gently is still a captor. Well, not captor, but definitely sole resource. But I imagine that if Emmae had asked, Warin would've taken her to town and "set her free." Don't mind me, I tend to think about things like people watch a tennis match.
It's interesting to see Edmerka and Emmae back in the same thought-space; we see Edmerka's stubbornness with Emmae's simplicity as Warin's woman and Emmae's grief and pain as Hildin's victim. I want to see Edmerka/Emmae happy, but it'd be...best? most pleasing? most "happily-ever-after"? to see her as Warin's Queen.
I was ready for a simple, happy ending, but that would be far too easy, wouldn't it? And I like it that way. Thanks for being awesome, Mei.
- BCT
well I can relate in one respect
I've never had any sexual feelings for my brother nor for any friend who stuck around long enough to feel like family (much to the dismay of one such male friend of mine) but I've definitely asked multiple people for advice in hopes that someone would tell me something different. Very rarely do they, and when they do, it's never what you wanted to hear.
Ellika's misstep
It wasn't her dress she was asking for assistance with--it was her CORSET. Much worse. Bad Ellika, no dance.
Gawsrh. I feel for Temmin.
Gawsrh.
I feel for Temmin. His sister has the best of intentions, but she is manipulating him. It's just like the Teacher says, she's acting like a Beloved but she doesn't have the proper knowledge to do so. She does not understand the consequences of playing with people's lives and emotions.
Emmae does need some space. I hope she learns about herself.
prophecy
The Traveler Queen's prophecy makes me suspect that we'll be seeing Emmae/Edmerka again.
When will society stop oppressing me with its unattainable standards?
Mmm, the Warin/Emmae
Mmm, the Warin/Emmae (Edmerka) story has reached a climax, but there is still ... ahh, what is the phrase. Not resolution as such, but the wrapping up afterwards. A similiar word and my brain is refusing to cough it up.
Denoument [sp]?
Depends on whether the courtship becomes the next section of the 'History' (as opposed to the 'Present' events) as to whether it is something we will learn about as part of the story or as a bonus tale, I'd wager.
And I second the desire to know about the Teacher/Travelling Queen history. It has the feel of a geasa to it.
I knew she would.
*nods* I had the definite feeling that it would be Emmae who would strike down Hildin, though for some reason I had the vision of her plucking Hildin's own dagger from his belt and using that. Carving knife works though.
..Like a rabbit... heheh.
Change is life
Well Emmae has just had two seperate lifes merg into one, that's bound to make for some interesting changes in a person. Even if one was just a spell-bound/created personallity. If there is more to her story it would be very interesting to see how she will handle being two compleately different people and now being a compleate new person.
Temmin really did step in it there at the end, though you should really knock when entering a room. Otherwise you might hear something that hurts you. The "talk" between Temmin and Ellika with either be heated or she might apologize for teasing him.
A good chapter MeiLin.
A Rude Awakening
It seems to me that Ellika is about to get the rude awakening that she deserves. She seems to think herself as adept as Allis and Issak at their duties, and, from this vanity, she's causing more harm than good (e.g. Fen and Arta, and now Temmin).
She even shows it several chapters ago:
"'Mama and Ibbit are lovers, Elly,' finished Sedra.
Ellika's eyebrows flew toward her hairline. 'What! Oh, no, no, no! I would have noticed something like that!'"
It seems to me that they need to strip her of any rank she holds at the temple and re-educate her before she sexually screws up anyone else.
Well, if Temmin manages to
Well, if Temmin manages to get braver, he'll say something to the twins before he's completely tongue-tied. At least Teacher suggested it, and Temmy seems to realize that he's got a clue...
"Loneliness is not a problem. Loneliness is nothing to be solved." -Pema Chödrön
Um, asking my younger brother
Um, asking my younger brother to help with my corset is something I'd do (if there was no female around). NOT how she did it, as there would be no flirting on either side. ANNNND I'd be properly covered before he was allowed to help.
We don't feel sexual towards each other. We do, however, feel comfortable around each other. When I visit him and his wife on my vaca-time he'll wander around in pj's in the a.m. and I'll go bra-less before bedtime.
And I don't like to admit it but....I can kinda see another side to Elly's actions. Sure, she's flirty and possibly has the same unwanted desire that her brother has. She's going about hashing it out wrong, but she's the OLDER sister. She's the one with the experience and she's probably taught him things throughout his life. She probably feels this is one more thing to teach him.
I just think Ellika needs a
I just think Ellika needs a humbling. She's not everything she's cracked up to be, there are consequences to her actions and she still has a lot to learn, none of which she seems to acknowledge. While I do think Temmin's realization and awareness of Ellika's actions magnify things, Ellika needs to develop some tact.
ya think?
