A letter was waiting on the library table when Temmin returned to his study, a letter in dark brown ink on delicate rose-colored paper, sealed in mingled gold and silver wax with the Lovers' Glyph. "Don't mind me," said the Teacher, lounging by the window. "By all means, read your note."
Temmin carefully slid his opener under the wax and unfolded the letter.
"Temmin Supplicant," it began. Still haven't gotten used to that, thought Temmin, though he'd be happy to attempt to get used to it, he added to himself. "Your presence is required at the Lovers' Temple Paggday morning through Ammaday morning." The writing was elegant, and there was no signature.
"An overnight," said Temmin, waving the note briefly before tucking it into his waistcoat close to his heart. "Paggday to Ammaday."
"And you'll be in no fit state for any kind of work again until Eddinday, I'd wager," sighed the Teacher. "Very well, let's get to it and not waste any time."
"First things first," said Temmin. The Teacher rose an enquiring eyebrow. "No spying on me. I'll insist on veiling any mirrors, you know, but I want your word."
"You may insist on whatever you please inside the Temple, your highness, but no one will pay you any mind. In fact you'd earn a punishment. And as for spying, it wasn't my wish to look in on you the other day."
"Oh, you just accidentally asked the mirror to show me, then," said Temmin sarcastically as he sat down at the library table.
"Actually, no, I don't make those kinds of accidents. Your father required it of me."
"Why did he want you to see us?"
The Teacher blew a breath out. "You are such a tiresome thing. Your father didn't want me to see, he wanted to see for himself. Now, are you quite satisfied? We have a great deal of history to cover today."
Temmin sat back in his chair. "I'm afraid I'm a bit nauseous."
"No doubt, but you pushed the point."
"That I did," said Temmin, and he opened the red-bound book.
"Most trying, Fredrik," said Hildin absently.
"Trying," snorted Fredrik. "I'm sure my wife finds her current circumstances quite trying. I've set her aside. Confiscated her family's lands while I was at it." He gazed moodily into the fire. "I'm not destined to put a son in any woman's belly, I fear. Pagg knows I've tried, I've sacrified every flawless white male calf born in the kingdom in the last 15 years to Him, to no avail. I sent both my wives and all my various amours to pray to Amma. I even consulted the Traveler Queen. She took my money and told me nothing could be done, can you imagine it!"
"A treacherous female, I've always said it," remarked Hildin, rolling his eyes at Gill when Fredrik turned away.
King Fredrik was initially taken aback at the change in his daughter. She was so much more humble than she had been before--quiet, controlled, and grateful for any service or kindness showed to her. It was welcome, and he reflected that perhaps her captivity had finally forced her to grow up. While he had personal doubts about that Hildin fellow, politically it was the perfect match. He only hoped his daughter would find some happiness in it as well.
He thought it a charming proof of already-blossoming love that she preferred to be called Emmae now, the pet name the prince was said to have given her. But when he brought her to the dais for her wedding ceremony, he couldn't help but be troubled by the tears tracing down her pale cheeks and her hand trembling on his arm.
Nevertheless, Emmae voiced no objections and recited her lines dutifully. She and Hildin were pronounced husband and wife. Bells pealed out over the countryside. Inside the castle, the company sat down to the wedding breakfast, and outside the commoners did the same at long tables set in the squares and parks of the city.
But the bells of the wedding celebration turned to funereal tones by nightfall. Not long after the wedding, King Gethin died.
In the nearby King's Woods, Warin looked up from the fire where he sat with the Travelers for the last time. He would enter the city tomorrow. The deep notes of the tolling bells reached the caravan's encampment, a spare echo from the towers of the Keep. "I don't like the sound of that," he said to no one in particular.
"Have patience, your highness," said the Traveler Queen. "Your time is coming." She doubled over suddenly in pain.
"Mother!" cried Connin, putting his arms around her.
"It's all right," she gasped. "Connin, take the prince off yonder. I dare not go myself. You know where I mean, and why I cannot go."
Connin nodded, and gestured for Warin to follow him. Even in the dark, the Traveler Prince seemed to know the way, and Warin could just make him out on the path. They stopped in a small clearing. The moon slipped from behind a cloud and reflected off a small, shiny disk hanging on a nearby tree. "Greetings, old friend," Connin called out.
Warin started at a familiar voice. "Greetings, child--your eyes! Oh, I'm so glad," it said. "And welcome home, Warin."
"Teacher?" said Warin, faltering. "Is it you?" The Teacher stepped forward out of the shadows. "Oh!" said Warin, overwhelmed. "Oh, my old friend! How I've missed you!" He ran up and embraced the slighter figure, holding the Teacher close and ending with a kiss on the cheek.
"It's good to see you well, your majesty," said the Teacher, smiling.
"Your majesty...?"
The Teacher turned grave. "Your father is dead, Warin. Though you renounced the throne, the magic doesn't care. I recognize you as king." The Teacher's proud face softened as tears formed in Warin's eyes. "He was sick and in a great deal of pain. I'm sorry you weren't able to say goodbye. Just know that he thought of you until the end."
"I should never have left, Teacher," said Warin hoarsely. "You were right."
"Your majesty, I'm always right, but no one ever listens," said the Teacher, wiping a thumb affectionately across Warin's damp cheek. "And I have more news. Your brother has married the Princess of Leutefloss. He intends to crown himself king in the morning."
Warin went very still. "Where did you step through?"
"The library. I had a very cleverly hidden reflective surface there, and I came as soon as Gethin died and the magic shifted away from Hildin. As long as Hildin was Regent, I had to obey him."
"Then why are we standing here?" cried Warin.
"We can't return tonight," said the Teacher. "I was closely watched, and I'm sure my escape has been noticed. But we can check if you'd like." They approached the small metal disk tacked to the tree. "If my library is anywhere within sight of a reflection, show it to me," said the Teacher. The reflection in the disk wavered and resolved to show the interior of the Keep's library, brightly lit and swarming with soldiers. The Teacher quickly covered the disk, removed it from the tree entirely and tucked it in the folds of the black robes. "He won't let us back that way until he wants us back," said the Teacher quietly. "The Keep is on full alert against you, and you cannot let yourself be killed, your majesty. Not foolishly in a nighttime skirmish."
"What do you advise, then?" said Warin.
"Patience until the morning. Your brother is quite mad, you know. I suspect he'll try to rig some public spectacle, and that's where you will want to reveal yourself--in public, before the people, so that no mistake of your identity can be made or claimed. Despite his constant jeering, he knows you'll try to retake your woman."
"Have you seen her?" cried Warin. "Is she well?"
"I have seen her," said the Teacher, nodding reassuringly. "She is still enchanted, and I won't mince words: Your brother and your cousin are taking full advantage. But she is otherwises unharmed, and he's kept her from the eyes and influence of others. Your mother was in a temper the day that poor girl wandered by, Connin. I've never seen a spell quite that peevish from her, and you can tell her I said so."
"Tell her yourself," said Warin, taking the Teacher's arm. "Come, let's go back to the encampment."
"No," said the Teacher, shrinking from his grip. "I can't." At Warin's frown, the Teacher added, "We can't be in each other's presence. Believe me, there's nothing I want more. But I can't. Even here, I am too close. Go back to the camp and sleep, your majesty. We'll need you rested and strong tomorrow."
"I would ask why, but I already know your odd ways," sighed Warin. "I will do as you say--for once. You'll be all right here? Should we send someone with supplies, a bedroll?"
"All of it unnecessary, thank you," said the Teacher, and Warin nodded. He embraced his Teacher once again, and walked back to the encampment with the Traveler Prince, his hand on the pommel of his sword, and his mind a mix of memories of his father, yearning for Emmae, and violent rage at the brother who stood between them.
"Why didn't your predecessor just kill Hildin and be done with it?" said Temmin, stretching in his chair. "If he didn't have to obey Hildin any more, why didn't he just do whatever magic thing you lot do, I don't know, set him on fire or something?"
"I cannot harm any male member of the royal family. I'm tied to all of you," said the Teacher.
"You will never convince me you're 800-some-odd years old," said Temmin flatly. "That's impossible."
"You're so right," said the Teacher, nodding slightly to Jenks as the manservant entered the room carrying a tray. "Magic books and communication by mirror--quite impossible." And with that, the Teacher left Jenks and Temmin alone. Jenks looked at his master enquiringly.
"Well, I mean!" said Temmin. "I know he's old--he's at least 35, but he's no 800."
Jenks rolled his eyes. "Your highness, how old do you think I am?"
"Oh, Jenks, you're even older than he is--you're ancient!"
"I'm 42!"
"Not just ancient, positively ancient!" Temmin teased.
"Puppy," Jenks sniffed as he laid out the luncheon. "I shall enjoy seeing you taken down a notch or two by your new sparring partner."
"Oh! So you've run Fen through his paces already? How does he look?"
Jenks shrugged, and stepped back as the prince attacked his lunch. "He looks like a man with a hangover who's been kicked by a horse. But he's got good instincts, he'll be fast on his feet, I think--he'll give you a run for your money, your highness. He reminds me of myself at that age, when I first started with your uncle. And you are very like him." He fell silent, and covered his sudden melancholy by pouring Temmin a glass of wine.
Temmin regarded him thoughtfully. "Pour yourself a glass, Jenks." The valet looked startled, but obeyed, pouring a second glass of the thin white wine. Temmin rose his glass. "To Uncle Patrin. I wish I'd really known him."
"To Lord Patrin," said Jenks emotionally, raising his own glass. "He loved you, young sir. He'd love you more now." They tossed back their glasses, and Jenks cleared his throat. "Now. Eat your lunch. Your taskmaster will be back before you know it."

:D
I really must stop staying up and waiting for chapters but it's just all so addicting...
<3 <3 <3 the Teacher. Also... DRAMA! What's between him and the Traveler Queen? I suppose I shall have to wait and find out.
Teacher and the Traveler Queen
More shall be revealed, but the entire story isn't totally revealed until what I thought was the end of the story--Temmin's story, not Emmae and Warin's. Now that I'm into it, I'm getting ideas for after what I thought was the end, so the end might not be the end, it might actually be the middle. In any event, I may be writing this thing for many years to come, and I don't know how long it'll be before that full story is played out (and it's killing me--I'm like, "I wanna tell them now!" "You can't tell them now, you'll ruin it." "I know, but---!").
Most enjoyable.
Guessing Teacher's presence is why the Traveler Queen doubled over in pain...
Wonder if the Traveler Queen is still alive, too?
continuity error ?
Here we have Temmin saying he'll never believe Teacher is 800years old, two chapters back he asked whether he good food and water when locked in the library. So at that point he does believe Teacher to be the one and the same. is this a change of mind from Temmin or slight oversight of our author ?

"good food and water" -> "got food and water" of course.

Get thee an account and thou shalt have one.
Non Mutatis Mutandis
People are mutable creatures. That Temmin said one thing one day and another thing another day is perfectly natural. Happens all the time.
continuity error?
Perhaps Temmin was simply being facetious?
clearly
He was clearly just angry at the Teacher at that moment, I could see him saying that without actually believing it.
Temmin was being facetious the first time
He's never believed Teacher to be that old, but he knows Teacher wants him to believe it. So he teases.
I like the back and forth in
I like the back and forth in the dialogue in this chapter. The mystery of the Teacher and the Traveler Queen is hopping around and trying to escape from its glass jar, too.
Thanks!
I shall have to poke some holes in the top of that jar so the plot bunny can breathe, because it's going to be in that jar for a while.
Teh ebil
You are the second web-authoress I have given that title to. You're whole dialog in the earlier comment about wanting to tell... yeah, turn that around and say it as if you were me. "But I wanna knoooooowwwww." Evil, evil woman. Giving us just a whiff of something to come and then telling is that we're going to have to wait ages.
Excelent work
loved the chapter. Had to reread it this morning cuz i was half asleep when i read it last night. I cant wait for the sparring match. Though I love Temmin dearly it will be quite enjoyable to see him knocked on his butt a few times. As always keep up the good work.
Fabulous as always. The
Fabulous as always. The Teacher is far and away my favorite character. The depth, the intrigue! The relation between the Traveler Queen and the Teacher is very exciting. I'm surprised no one has commented on the bombshell you dropped that was the revealing of Warin's mother. At least I certainly thought it was one.
The sparring is all well and good, but I'm waiting for the explosive action of Warin once he makes his presence known. That's going to be fun!
This story would make an excellent movie, both from the business sense and the entertainment sense.
Warin's mom?
Warin's mom was Sella, who died giving birth to Hildin. If you're thinking of the Traveler Queen, she's Connin's mom. I had to go back and re-read to make sure I hadn't mixed them up myself!
Thank you for the kind words.
Nice stuff
I like the chapter, and I have a guess on the relationship between the Teacher and the Traveler Queen.
I will wait and see if they were lovers at one time, and maybe are now cursed to stay apart for them to live.
First time commenter, long time reader.
I've been reading since Chapter 3 and I have to say I'm as addicted to your story as to AE's. Free web novels are like free crack. If I had a job, I donate out of guilt alone!
The Teacher grows more intriguing with each appearance. I think it's a safe bet that there is an "intimate" relationship between the Teacher and the Traveler Queen, but the exact nature of that relationship is still very much undefined, tyvm evil authoress. You've said that Temmin's story is only part of a larger story. Perhaps the story of the Teacher and the Traveler Queen must be revealed for that larger story to continue?
there is so much I want to tell you
and I just can't. I'm not using my powers for evil, I'm using them for great justice, because if I told you it would ruin everything. Thanks for reading! If you can't donate, do the marketing targets and spread the word! Even if you *can* donate!
I also had a mental mixup and
I also had a mental mixup and thought the Teacher identified the traveller queen as Warin's mother. (I got all excited like it was a huge revelation. now I just feel silly.
)
His actual father doesnt seem nearly so fatherly, I'm wondering how that will work itself out during the story.
I like the touch of the kind of closer fatherly relationship that Timmin and Jenks have going right now... I think it's really sweet. Father/son stories always get me all sentimental for some reason.
I'm a little torn at hearing this is going to be a very long story. I am glad that time is being spent on working this up to be a really well written and developed story. But OMG I want to have the whole thing in a book to read RIGHT NOW. D: so many things I can't wait to hear more about!
Anyway, thank you for the consistent update schedual and excellent writing.
and pretty please enroll me in the lover's temple.
Fathers and sons
Harsin hardly knows Temmin. He loves him, but they're nearly strangers. Jenks, on the other hand, has seen Temmin almost every day of his life, and has been his servant/bodyguard since Temmin was three. For all intents and purposes, emotionally, he is Temmin's father.
Always tell me what you guys want to hear more about. I might not be able to tell you right away, but I'll file it for future reference. I'm hoping that even though it may take a while to get to where we're going that you'll really, really enjoy the trip.
Fan service. I has it.
that was longer than
that was longer than intended.
as a side note, I can't remember how I found this site. I'm assuming I clicked a banner somewhere along the way... (I don't really know what the other sites commenters are mentioning are. maybe you could enlighten me?)

Check out the links page, you should find most referenced serials there. Also check out Pages Unbound for more. As for how you got here, I advertise on several sites. Maybe Hipmama? BPAL.org? Your login looks familiar.
Teacher
Am I the only one who thinks Teacher is"hawt"?! He is the ultimate mystery man! He powerful and underspoken, observant, intuative and elegant. I want my own "teacher".
Ms. Mei, again...Bravo.
Teacher
I am being to like the Teacher more, but I still mistrust Gurdians.
Continuity?
This is the first time the Teacher has actually volunteered information about himself, despite his promise that such things would be off-limits until our hero ascends the throne.
which information?
That Teacher's tied to the royal line? That's not personal. That's part of the role.
Teacher
I'm looking at the banners and I realized who would be good for Teacher: Jason Isaacs. The banner art made me think of Malfoy, but Draco is just too young.
