Winmer and Affton sorted the post at Tremont Keep twice a day, once in the morning and once in the late afternoon. The family and guests received theirs at breakfast and tea, but the servants got theirs just once, at dinner, not to be opened until they were dismissed for the night.

This day's post contained a brown paper package addressed to "Miss Arta Dannikson, Tremont Keep," with a return address of "Miss Katheny Dannikson, Daub Cottage, Templestone, Valmouth." Arta took it to her room and sat on her bed, her bare feet tucked under her nightgown against the cold as she untied the string.
