Here's some preliminary color art for "Son in Sorrow." Beatriz Gonzalez is our new artist and she's done a pretty darn good job capturing Temmin. It's far from done, but Bea's hard at work.

Whoa.

When can we buy the book again? Wink

In March. So many variables. I'm pegging it for May at Kickstarter.

That I'm hoping for May, so that I can get it read without procrastinating on homework? Of course, if it's March, I can read during spring break...

I don't know about you, but I already bought mine.

I think...

*handwave* Buy it, read it, I was speakinging generally of my desire for story now! as prompted by seeing the cover Wink

who appreciates the fact that he got his beard? Smile I love this! Temmin looks so mature. Very well done! Brilliant!

He looks very intense. And is that the moon and a red planet in the background? Very intriguing.

Those are kinda just there. This is really preliminary art; you'll note the frame is some sketchy orange lines in spots. The Lovers' symbols were on the last cover. This cover will have another god's symbols instead. Not saying which god now, but you will know immediately when the cover is done with no explanation.

We love to speculate. I'm going to go with Harla. They will, after all, be going to the Hill....

... bones and ravens in her tweets, that looks like a reasonably safe bet, yes.

why else would a son be so sorrowful? And don't forget the prophecy...

That's even better! (Especially if it's Harla!0

...that the cover scene is one of the worst days of Temmin's life.

I should think so, given what he's about to do to his hair! Jenks will be FURIOUS! *wry*

Also, (not actually a spoiler as far as I know, but very speccy, so...)

Spoiler: Highlight to view
I find it intriguing that he appears to be using... a stone knife? A knapped flint blade, as opposed to the expected typical steel blade with handle? Which combined with the fact that it's a braided lock, makes me think it's a ritual of some sort, rather than a sudden desire to do his own hair trimming.

The stone knife also suggests Harla to me. She seems like the only deity that would specify such a requirement.

Ditto speccy.

Obsidian is a black stone and can be worked significantly sharper than a razor blade. Just sayin' Smile

Did anybody else notice the colors on Temmin's sash? No Tremontine red and gold, like on his mother's and father's sashes in their portraits. Are these the Whithorse colors he's wearing? And if so... *is suddenly very worried about what might happen in Book Two*

MeiLin's picture

Nice catch! Remember that as Duke, Temmin is head of the House of Whithorse. At this occasion he's representing Whithorse.

...kind of a lot of characters I've come to care about. Sad

The obvious not-happiness of the occasion is what's making me worried. *and anxious to read the new book, to be honest -- which means, even unfinished, the cover's doing its job!*

I'm happy you and the artist decided to stick to the previous drawing style and layout. I hate when series totally change appearance from book to book. Looks like crap on the bookshelf ;). Also, Temmin looks very good, and not that much different from Alice's version.

But I think he looks more angry than sad?

MeiLin's picture

Let's just say something horrible has happened. He is angry, sad--in great pain. Tem does not have a good book this time around. You guys are gonna hate me.

The art nouveau style is my branding for this series. Books need branding, especially indie books. My covers are like nothing else out there; when you see one, you'll know instantly what it is. At some point I'm going to get the covers of the short story collections redone to match. Despite the Kickstarter, I don't have the money for that; most of that money is very spoken for.
