What's up with these points thingies?
The points are to encourage participation and evangelism of the story; the more you participate in the site, and the more readers you bring in, the more points you get. And the more points you get, the higher ranking you get on the site and the more points you have to spend. We'll get to that. First--
Earning points
You must have an account to earn points! It's free and easy!
1 point for posting a comment
2 points for posting a recipe or a forum topic
5 points for fan art posted to the gallery
10 points for each successful referral
Reward levels

200 points

--Postulant status and badge
400 points

I also may award extra points for folks who work in the wiki or otherwise provide great service to the story, at my discretion.
Note: I'm still revising the points rewards. This is how they stand 7/1/10. Kinda below Embodiment! I'm hoping to come up with more good stuff soon.

Awesome new system!
This new point system is a great new aproach!! Love the 'status titles' and badge ideas!!! Not to mention the availability to have a CAMEO in the story!! So cool!!!!!!
Good work :)
This looks great (and the badges are awesome...I can't wait to get to Supplicant, that one's my favorite). Did you ever decide if we'll be able to keep our badges if we spend our points? Thanks!
I'm not sure what will happen
I can't program it to do that automatically--I know that much. And I know I can't keep up with it by hand. So we'll see what the system does. If it busts you back a badge, I'm sorry, but that's how it'll be. It's incentive to keep going.
By 'story question' do mean
By 'story question' do mean just a general question about the story that will be answered, or a bonus story request like what had been done before?
Story request
It works like a bonus story request. You ask a question (and lose some points), it goes into the points story proposals. If it passes that, you get your bonus story.
hrmpf...
I don't know if I want to move on to Postulant. I rather like the Devotee badge. Then again, the supplicant is kind of neat too.
PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals
A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
No kidding :)
Although I have to say, I like them in the order they are up until Supplicant. I just don't like Embodiment as much as Supplicant. Maybe if it were a different color, like purple or something. It's almost the same color as the Petitioner badge. I'm not going to worry about it, though. I think 800 points is a long way away.
oooh, purple!
Maybe I'll recolor it. Thanks!
Oh Yeah.
lookin' GOOD! TheBoy likey.
I'll be getting there...soon? I hope?

Pretty pretty. Now I'm torn. Do I like the Devotee or Embodiment...

A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
Wow.
That came out great! I like it a lot better, and now I'm much more motivated to become an Embodiment
the old requests
Will you be adding the unanswered bonus story questions from the old system to the voting menu? It's looking awfully empty now...
no
They will get a static page of their own once I get this kid out of my lap...
eh?
Not only do you shower with your computer...
Never mind.

yeah
It's pretty much attached to my hip. I've even been known to carry it into the kitchen, and I regularly watch TV with it in my lap.
Question
Do you mean "skip the voting process" or "skip the queue entirely?" (For the -200 point story-buys for us high rollers)
It's supposed to be a challenge, that's why they call it a shortcut. If it was easy it would just be the way.

skip the voting process
It goes into the queue of guaranteed stories.
Perhaps a rephrase,

That's a good idea.
I think I probably would too. As it stands, we never know when our points stories will hit the press, but if we could be next, that would be neat. I don't know how that would work out for you artistically, though. I never figured out whether you were writing them in the order they were requested or if you had to wait until the mood struck.
symbols
Do each of the temples (gods) have their own symbol?
PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals
A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.
yes
and I haven't designed them yet.
I can't wait!
It's going to be super fun to be able to pick a temple. I think we're going to have a lot of Lover's Temple devotees. Actually, do you think we could have that be a poll sometime?
poll
I think a poll about which temple people would choose could give some interesting results (for example, Death gods/goddesses usually aren't that popular while people might find Harla more likeable now that she appears in the story more.)
Give Points?
I wanted to know what this "give points" button is at the bottom of each comment. Is it part of the new system? What does it do? Please excuse me if these questions are totally obvious
you can give another user some of your points
if you're so inclined.
message
Do you get some kind of message when it happens or do you have to figure out for yourself where the points suddenly came from?
Haha,
That almost makes it more fun! Now I kind of want to share my points with some random person to see if they can figure out where the came from. I won't yet (because I'm really close to leveling up), but maybe someday.
I don't know!
It'll be interesting to find out!
I think...
you just have to figure it out for yourself. Someone gave me points, and I didn't know who until they told me!
That's awesome!
Thanks for answering my question
Badges
So, I just obtained a new status (and I got my e-mail to indicate that I'm now a Postulant), but my badge hasn't updated. I don't mind, but I thought this was something that got updated automatically, not something you updated by hand. I was actually planning on testing the system by giving away 2 points or so to see if my badge would stay the same, but it didn't change when I leveled up. Any ideas?
huh.
I dunno! It should have upgraded automatically. I did it for you. I will look into this.
Thank you!
I appreciate it. This is fun! And the badges are so cool!
found out the problem
For some reason the badge for Postulant hadn't been defined. It is now.
Whiiiine
Is this where I would gripe about my shiny red Postulant badge? I used to have the nifty green Supplicant one and my points are still registering in the upper 4's
I don't think I ever got a Supplicant upgrade email, either, but I know I had the badge for a while.
Wow! Sarcasm! That's original!
back to normal
I think it's because I finally activated the postulant badge.
It was
...at least until I started posting again. Then I got in rapid succession a devotee, petitioner, and then postulant promotion in my email. Still never a supplicant, and now I'm red again. You're such a naughty woman, you even have kinks in your points system! (thanks so much for taking the time to work on it)

Yup, I got three
One each announcing my promotion to Devotee, Petitioner and Postulant status, respectively.
found the definitive problem
The problem was, when I gave both you and TheBoy Supplicant status by hand, I unchecked the others. The system promptly promoted you back into those categories and acted as if Postulant was the highest you'd achieved. So now I'm leaving well alone.

Also, is there anyway for us to see the "Users By Points" thing again? I think it used to be a link on the sidebar, which you probably swapped out for all the other stuff you've added. Just wondering if there was another way to see it (I'm nosy and wondering how many of us have reached Supplicant status, Postulant status, etc).

So now I've put a poll up. When I have 200 replies to it, I'll follow its suggestion.
We could...
just keep a top ten list running, or a top 10 under 800. I think only the people who are racing towards embodiment *cough*V*cough*TheBoy*cough*cough* really care that much how many points other people have, and I know I'm a little bit interested in following that race.

at zero, though? I was pretty sure that we got retroactive points for our pre-point system posts, but now I'm not sure. The forum has really picked up, though, and I'm really excited about it. I feel like I've gotten to know people around here a lot better than I did six months ago. I think it helps that we get extra points for new forum topics. People seem to look to start them more now, and it leads to a lot of on topic conversations and a lot of off topic ones.
I'm not sure
I didn't think we got retroactive points, and I'm certainly not asking for them. I'm also pretty pleased that this place is taking off. I just hope we can keep the sense of camaraderie that we've got going on.

Recipes
Not only do I have a ridiculous number of recipes, but this is giving me an excuse to actually type them up, since I've been thinking for a few years that I should get all of mine into text file just so they'd be organized. So yeah, my general procedure has been post recipe, then copy and paste into a text file on my computer. I've probably doubled the number I have written up this way

a bad plan. I should probably do that at some point too, but I haven't committed to having digital recipes yet. I really like the little photo album I have, and the kitchen computer is a little slow and annoying to use. The photo album is less than optimal, though, if I'm cooking at someone else's house, so maybe I'll get on that.

really we lose the badge? But if I get 800 I don't wanna lose it! Damn it, if it's my only way to appear somewhere in ther story (doing something with Allis I hope
) then I gotta save 1600 so I can have my question skip the voting process and get into the story somehow...oh boy...
Cameo is separate. Pay 400,
Cameo is separate. Pay 400, and you wind up you appear somewhere--mine showed up in Marri's bonus story.
200 is to submit a generic question with no voting process.
It's supposed to be a challenge, that's why they call it a shortcut. If it was easy it would just be the way.

Yeah...
I miss counted, since I want to keep the final badge I need at least 1400, 800 for the badge, 400 to appear somewhere in the story, and 200 to have a question skip the voting process...yay....

Actually, no
Recipes are uncopyrightable, probably because most of them are just variations on variations on variations. But I still think it would be a bit rude to just grab other people's recipes to post, not to mention that it's far more interesting if you share your own recipes!
Also, this is my 200th point! YAY!

when I last leveled up. I think I skipped 800 points! It looked like it just went from 799 to 801. Can someone else verify that?
Also, getting to 1000 points officially doesn't break the system.

but 800 was quite a while ago, at least a couple of weeks, and I know I hit 800 with a comment, not a new forum topic. I was just wondering if anyone else had noticed that, or if I was crazy.
Question
What exactly is the "voting process" for bonus stories? I mean, I get that we pay points to vote for them, but how does that translate into them being written? Do they need a certain number of points before the move into the queue, or is it the one with the most points at a given time, or what? Would voting for a story more than once get it onto the queue faster? I'm curious!
I'm working from the backlog right now
I hope to get more than one a week out soon.
Voting for points stories...
I had thought we might be able to spend more than one point to vote for the same story multiple times.
The system does not currently support that.
Is that as you had desired?

on way or another
Well, one way or another someone with craploads of points can always just buy a question
Maybe allowing multiple point expenditures MeiLin can get some of us to blow a bunch of points in a bidding war over questions.

that was sort of my thought.
Otherwise, once I buy my cameo (less than 100 points...I don't want to give up my embodimenthood), I'm gonna be stuck just buying bonus stories every 200 points.

This may be posted elsewhere, and I'm just too lazy (sleep deprived, stressed, etc.) to go find it, but I'm not altogether sure how the points questions work at this point. Do all of them just sit in a queue and the highest one at any given time gets written, or is this an issue of they can gain points for a set period of time, and the highest proposed question from that time period can be voted on? I honestly don't think I'll be asking one any time soon (and I may just wait until I have enough for a guaranteed story and auction it off again), but I'm kind of curious.

you with the taunting!
yeah well
Been stressed out, not getting out of lab till 8 or 9 at night, and trying to figure out how to absorb almost 6 grand of expenses in a month; it's cut down on my posting
Not to mention my laptop dying... Rest assured, once I get some of this crap taken care of I'll go back to posting 10-20 recipes a night and I'll have more points than any of us knows what to do with
Besides, I still have enough to ask an automatic question and keep my status

ok...
so we have to be at the top level in order to ask for a cameo huh? that serverly docks points then holy...but how many points must we have for a bouns story?
@ 100 points, you can pay 10
@ 100 points, you can pay 10 to post a question for voting.
@ 400 points, you can pay 200 points to ask a question and skip the voting process.
Whoever you are, if you have a REALLY GOOD question, and think I'd like it, you can PM me, and we'll see if we can't work something out--involving you sending me some points (nontrivial number, depending on your question quality, and how much I've got to burn).

I notice all the points story and voting references have been taken out. Is that just while you're on hiatus, or a more semi-permanent thing?

I honestly don't know yet
I'm thinking hard about what the bonuses should be. Right now, there's no way I can reliably write points stories so I don't want to promise them when I'm not sure I can deliver. I want the bonuses to be good.
