Those of you with accounts may have noted that now when you comment you get a little notification saying "You earned a point!" (It may be every five points, I'm not sure.) You can see who has points here, and at the bottom of every page you can see how many points you yourself have. Now, you may be asking yourself: What's up with the points?
The points are to encourage participation. You get one point for every comment you make. At 50 and 100 points, you can ask me for a little side story, something told from the perspective of one of the other characters--and you can pick the character. These are not extra chapters. They have to be well-earned points. Going through and making 50 one-word comments will result in getting your comments deleted and your points deducted, not to mention pissing me off. And I get to decide what's a well-earned point. After 50 and 100, the target moves to 100 points, so your next story would be at 200, then 300 and so on.
I also may award extra points:
Fan art, including filk (but not fanfic, no fanfic, please): 5 points
Links back to the site: 5 points
Reviews at PagesUnbound.com: 5 points
Whatever the hell I feel like giving you points for: However the hell many points I wanna give
Be sure to let me know in the comments if you qualify for extra points.
This may or may not work, I'm just playing with stuff here.

Interesting idea. Were you
Interesting idea. Were you going to do it individually, and send out a private side story, or en masse and post a short bonus story every time someone gets to 50?
oh, en masse.
You want private stories? You drop huge wad of cash on me. How huge? I'll knows it when I sees it.
Haha
I figured.
Maybe you want to set a word limit; that way, if more than one person makes it to fifty at once, you just write a longer story. Like 300-500 words, or something?
I think
I'll just play it as it lays. The point winner gets to pick who the story's about. Maybe I'll write two stories, maybe I'll combine the two people into one longer story. And the story will be as long or as short as it is.
ETA: And don't think I don't know what you're up to, buster, with this string of comments.
One more
All right, I found one for you that isn't disappearing. When I click to view "users by points," there's a hyperlink for "Details" next to my name. If I click on that, it gives me a blank white screen--not a 404 or anything, more like the code isn't loading properly.
Update: the "My Points" link does the same.
yeah
I already noticed that. not sure what's up with it.
Hrmm
Hrmm. You don't happen to have two files listed for that link, in your website's directory, do you? I once had something like that happen when I had a default "home" file in my main directory and then set a page in Wordpress' software with the name "home." Since Wordpress handles everything internally, there can't be anything to interfere with the address, as it were, manually. The "home" file preempted the fake file Wordpress was trying to create, and it defaulted to a white screen like that since the "home" file was blank.
can't happen in drupal
There's a collision detector; you can't give two pages the same name. It's probably a bug in the module.
Where is 'My Points"
I can see the point by users page but I can't seem to find the My Points link or page. Is it hidden somewhere, or am I just that blind?
And to make this post worth it, I think the points idea is a good idea, lets people like me (read: poor) help contribute to getting a bonus story and possibly having a say in what it might be.
it's under your name in the rightmost bar
...but a software bug has it puling up blank. The users by points link is working, though.
Yup, I'm blind
Now I see it. Maybe I really should get those new contacts. I might have to start commenting on each chapter as it comes up.. usually i just sit back and comment to myself about what others say. They usually say it before I can anyway, seeing as how when the updates some I'm in bed sleeping.
That's when...
... you reply with an "I totally agree with this person" comment. Or go back and find other things to comment on...
... kinda like I'm doing now. So what if you made this comment a week ago. See, I had something to reply to it now that I'm going back and reading
I think that it's a nifty
I think that it's a nifty plan for now. I imagine, however, that there will be trouble with the plan (unless point-scoring gets harder, or rewards more expensive) as your popularity (and commenting) increases. You might create a backlog (much like with the possibility of repeated ransoms).
no fear at present of either backlog
Donations are slow and comments are slow.
Though I didn't go through with the chapter plan. No, if commenting suddenly and unexpectedly leaps to ToMU levels, the points system will either adjust as suddenly and unexpectedly, or I'll drop it altogether. If I drop it altogether, I'll arrange some suitable reward for people who've been playing along.
If commenting and donations
If commenting and donations rise to ToMU levels, you'll have bigger things to worry about.
Like BPAL, and gloating to your husband.
it's going to take a while
both for us to get to ToMU levels, if ever, and to dig out from under our tax debt. At this point I'm worrying about whether I'll be able to buy the ISBN numbers I'll need to self-publish. Here's hoping.
did I miss something?
I don't remember anything about your tax debt...
See here. Between property
See here. Between property taxes and federal taxes, we're in big trouble.
Aha! Finally found the comments.
Took a while to figure out that I should probably click that unassuming line of differently coloured text...
Anyway. A valid link to your story. It should be the first one in the left links. Looks a bit out of place. Email me if it's not there.

I don't get many readers to my blog, which so far has been fine by me... (You can probably tell there's no substance on that blog. I am slightly paranoid.)
I'm in the process of getting connected up to the rest of the university choral societies in the country over LJ, if I don't forget about it, I'll post a link up there too.
thank you!
x-points for you!
What some people don't realize is that even if your blog, LJ, MySpace page, whatever, doesn't get much traffic, every link to the History increases its mightiness with search engines and other traffic generators. It counts. Believe me.
