An Interim Story: Peacock Feathers

The Evening of the 14th Day of Spring's Beginning

"Are you nervous?" said Issak.

"Aren't you?" replied his sister.

"This isn't the first time we've done this sort of thing, you know. Turn around, let me help you. Hold your hair up." Issak fastened the collar Allis had been trying to clasp with shaking fingers.

"You're right, I don't understand why I'm so worked up this time. It's just another dance at the palace." Allis let her hair fall from her hands and fingered the pearl choker around her neck, then turned to her twin. "Do I look all right?"

"Allis, you always look all right," said Issak, but he surveyed her with a critical eye nonetheless. "Mm. You look like a very elegant prisoner, take off one of the bracelets." She stuck her pretty pink tongue out at him and removed one of the matching pearl cuffs. "Better. No, no, it's not working, turn round again and lift your hair." He unfastened the choker. "That's better. You can keep the one cuff, and the earrings, but the rest of the set has to go. The least ornamentation the best with us, Allis, you know that."

"It's true," she sighed, smoothing out the subtly patterned ivory fabric of her ballgown. "Still and all, it'd be nice to display the peacock's plumes once in a while, don't you think?"

He pulled her to him and pointed her at the cheval glass, standing behind her with his hands tracing patterns on her bare shoulders. "Sister, we were born with peacock's plumes." He rested his chin atop her glossy dark head and took them both in with eyes of a shade not far from a peacock feather's iridescent green. His waistcoat matched her gown, giving it just the right touch of scandal considering white, not ivory, was correct, and her bodice was cut just a fraction of a hair too low for propriety, displaying her curves to great effect. "If you wore the choker," he said in her ear, sliding a finger the length of her collarbone down the soft slope of her breast toward her cleavage, "you'd pull the eye up and spoil the entire effect of that bodice."

He ran his finger deftly back up her neck, tilting her chin up as his touch left her skin, and she gave him an impish smile in the mirror. "You're right, of course."

"Actually," he growled, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her closer, "you are dazzling tonight. I could eat you."

"Not till Neya's Day, brother," she said demurely, slipping out of his arms and tapping him on the nose with her fan. "Then you can have your fill."

"Do you two always practice seduction on one another?" came a cool voice from the corner.

"Seducing you never goes anywhere and we have to practice on someone," said Allis, slipping into a fur-trimmed pelisse and settling its hood carefully over the richly fragrant blossoms banding her hair. "Besides, no one is as good at it as we are. It's no challenge at all with anyone else."

"Tonight's quarry you will find sweet but almost comical," said the voice. "He has no real experience whatsoever with men or women, combined with an ardent nature. It should be a matter of a few meaningful glances and that's all, you'd have him snared. He's naive, but he's not stupid. Don't rush at him."

Allis rolled her eyes. "You know very well we only rush at someone if that's what's required."

Issak began pulling on his cloak, and sighed. "Inexperienced and naive. Oh dear. Please tell me he's not ugly to boot."

"To the contrary, he's rather handsome."

"Well, there's a lucky thing. Not that it would stop us, there's always something to desire about someone, even if it's only their absence," said Issak with a grin as he popped his hat onto his head.

"You do realize that we can't accept him as a Supplicant just because you want us to," said Allis, turning back from the door. "We can't do that. Not even for our sponsor. We take this job quite seriously--we believe in what we're doing."

"I know you do, my dear," said the figure in black, taking her hand and one of her brother's. "That's why I'm asking you to do this. I truly believe the Heir to be a perfect Supplicant candidate, even though it would also serve my purposes. Otherwise I wouldn't ask you to so much as dance with him. Do realize," the Teacher added as they turned to go, "do realize that while he is exceedingly winsome and still as guileless as a baby, he is also genuinely charismatic. What you will unloose in him may prove more than even the two of you can handle."

"You underestimate us, dearest sponsor," said Issak with a kiss on the pale cheek. Allis kissed the other side.

"I merely wish to warn you not to understimate Prince Temmin," said the Teacher. "Now. Off to the Keep with you. He's waiting for you, he just doesn't know it."

Aww, just because flirting

Aww, just because flirting with someone achieves no results is no reason to keep up! Pretty much what I was expecting went on, though I didn't think the Teacher would have been so nervous about keeping an eye on them and encouraging them. He struck me as more of the sort that would trust things to stay in motion and just keep an eye with mirrors. Interesting that he's so hands-on, it possibly speaks to a fair bit of paranoia and trust issues.

merely a helping hand

to prod things along a tad. Allis and Issak were the Teacher's wards in their minority; they look in that direction as they would a favorite uncle or aunt, and the Teacher remains very interested in their wellbeing.

typo?

Interesting story, as always.
I think there may be a typo in the 3rd paragraph counting from the end. Teacher says: "it would also serves my purposes". Wouldn't it rather 'serve' his purposes?

MeiLin's picture

thanks

The tense was correct and then I added the "would also" and screwed up the sentence. Shocked

Ah, the slightly ugly side of being beautiful. A bit of familiarity can lead to a lot of blase. The twins were very compelling people to begin with but these little touches here and there that show they're not perfect really make them shine.

Haha love it.

love these two. (: I have a thing for characters that are bisexual...
(sorry for disappearing for a while there, I started reading Tales of MU (only about 100 chapters so far, gods there are so many!) and then flew to England for classes... now I'm catching up. Eye-wink I love your writing.)

Lovely

Their devotion to each other and their job is touching. Teacher does seem to trust them rather more than most, even though he already seems to suspect his warnings will be for naught.

Gudy's picture

And for good reason

These two sure are cocky. Granted, they are young, extraordinarily beautiful, and apparently quite capable in their chosen area of expertise. This makes their cockiness somewhat excusable, but they are underestimating Temmin, I think.

Thanks, MeiLin. Reading this little glimpse of the twins has made a perfect opener for my Monday morning.

V's picture

Your choice of tense

is only correct in the context of this story, I think. The twins are quickly learning that Temmin isn't to be taken lightly...think of the bath scene, and Allis by the shrine. It's quite fun to see them discombobulated, actually.

"Well played."

Katie's picture

discombobulated

I love that word. So much fun to say. ^_^

V's picture

Discombobulation!

Oh yes. When I was writing the comment I thought of the word, checked dictionary.com to make sure I had it spelled correctly and that it -was- a real word, and imagine my glee when I discovered that 1. it's real and 2. it was the perfect place to use it Laughing out loud

Hopefully it doesn't make me too much of a geek that I answer questions about words, word use, or almost any other question that crosses my brain while I'm online by immediately throwing it into wikipedia or dictionary.com >.<

blwinteler's picture

one of my favorites

I had a director in community theater who used "discombobulated" quite frequently. I didn't believe it was a real word, but it worked well so I used it a lot. Eventually I looked it up in the big dictionary at the school library (I was about 16 years ago and I hated computers at the time). I was surprised to find it there, but pleased too. I don't hear it often. I actually ended up discussing the word in my last job interview. The supervisor interviewing me used it and we got sidetracked from the interview. I'll be starting the job in 3 weeks. Smiling

Yup

I probably should have added an "at that point" or something similar to make that clearer. Where the story stands right now after book one, those two probably have a much better appreciation for Temmin, although I don't think that they are out of the danger zone quite yet (and may not actually get out of it as long as they keep on dealing with him on such an intimate basis.)

And yes, watching Temmin get Allis (and sometimes Issak) all flustered IS fun! Smiling

V's picture

Fun stuff.

Clearly I've been underestimating Teacher's meddlings in all kinds of arenas...nice interim story.

But now, for the nitpicks: the last line of the fourth paragraph sounds funny to me, "The least ornamentation the better with us, Allis, you know that"...I would expect less/better or least/best...one is a gradient, the other is an extreme. And the last sentence of the story is missing an opening quotation mark before "Now".

MeiLin's picture

nitpicks

"Least" was what Issak said. Yes, it's extreme. Smiling

Quotation mark fixed. Thanks!

MeiLin's picture

further discussion

has clarified for me what V was gently trying to say (I'm an ungrammatical dunce) and so changes will/have been made.

Han-pan's picture

Awkward?

Enjoyed, as always dear MeiLin Smiling

However, I do have a question. I've reread this sentence over and over and...well, over again and I still don't quite get what you're trying to say. I'm not sure if its awkwardly phrased or if I'm just stupid Laughing out loud

Quote:

I understand the bit of the bodice. But not the color matchery, or the scandal of it. ^^;;

V's picture

I wrote it off...

as girly stuff or courtly stuff that I wasn't aware of. Jenks is the man to ask. If "proper attire" is considered white, then the guy showing up in an ivory waistcoat is daring, but not talked about quite so much as the guy who showed up to the prom in his dad's dirty Metallica t-shirt.

Saphira's picture

They way I read it, they're

They way I read it, they're 'supposed' to be wearing white (although I can't really recall why and a looming ornithology exam is keeping me from digging to find out, maybe something to do with their status at the temple?) and they picked another color (ivory). It just close enough that it won't draw huge attention, like showing up in Tremont red or something. But it will make people look twice and talk behind their hands. Which is probably exactly the reaction these two want.

And they're a matching set - so of course the outfits would match in some way or other.

MeiLin's picture

no color restrictions

They can wear whatever they'd like. Smiling Allis's gown being ivory gave Issak a chance to both match her and raise a few eyebrows, if only just a hair.

MeiLin's picture

rigid codes

The scandal is not that Issak's waistcoat matches Allis's gown; if you recall, later that same night Ellika and Temmin are a bit "matchies." Tremont is fairly freewheeling in some respects, but not in others. White waistcoats, shirts, and stocks, ties or cravats are the dress code for male formal wear, along with black suit coats and trousers. Ivory dark enough to be recognized as ivory and not white would be ever so slightly scandalous--not as scandalous as an actual color, but just the little touch of raciness and rebellion that people expect from Allis and Issak. Her dress is cut just the tiniest shade too low, he's dressed just a bit outside of propriety.

Han-pan's picture

Lovely!

Thank you for elucidating my dear Laughing out loud

Saphira's picture

Yes, thank you. I have to

Yes, thank you. I have to remember to try and stop assigning meaning to everything outside of Philosophy class. Color usually has some sort of symbolism in my writing, even if it's vague and unintentional.

Kaisar Ryu's picture

color symbology

Similarly, I was initialy assuming something to do with the white/beige differentialtion in meanings with weddings and such, that left me trying to spin my mind around what the scandal would be in the Embodiements of the Lovers not being 'pure' (virginal) would be. Much more sense if it is meerly a standard dressing convention.

MeiLin's picture

I mentioned it

briefly, waaaay back before the ball in honor of Temmin's arrival, the one that Allis and Issak are dressing for in this story. You would hardly be an unobservant reader if you missed it; it was a brief mention when Temmin was getting exasperated with Jenks for turning his wardrobe upside down.

Gudy's picture

To be fair

Even that scene doesn't make it blindingly obvious what, exactly, the scandal is, at least to me. Sure, you mentioned Jenks apparently having laid out every combination of black and white the wardrobe allowed, and that Temmin dismissed it all since guys were all simply dressed in black and white, so what's the point of carefully choosing stuff. But I certainly didn't get the impression that ivory was enough of a deviation from that dress code to be considered racy.

MeiLin's picture

well

Now you know. Eye-wink When I go to put this in the print version, I'll have to be careful to clarify.

Stormy's picture

FWIW

I understood it the first time through. As I am 4+ months late to the party, though, I suppose you may have rewritten it.

MeiLin's picture

nope

It's the original. Thanks!

Daymon's picture

Sneaky little devils

Ah so the twins were at the ball to check Temmin out, at the request of the Teacher no less. And here I thought they were just attending because it was the ball to welcome Temmin to the castle.

Yeah it didn't take much for Temmin to notice Allis at the ball either.

Allis and Issak are an interesting pair to be around I am sure, they are just lots of fun to listen to.
