Kiva

So, the webcomics community has a lending team at Kiva
http://www.kiva.org/community/viewTeam?team_id=4816

and I was wondering if an Intimate History lending team would be of interest to anyone. Or maybe just a webserial team? I don't wanna split the limited resources we all have and prevent anyone from supporting our favorite author, but I believe this is also a really good cause and worthwhile for those who can swing a bit extra. I threw in $100 two years ago and just keep re-lending the same money over and over.

Or we can just throw in with the webcomics folk...*shrug*

as to how this works, Stormy? How would lending $100 be better than donating $100?

Also, Mei, I would be interested to see what you think about this idea.

is that you get your money back...you can use the same $100, one hundred times. The loan helps a small business get started, which means you're "teaching a man to fish" instead of "giving him a fish."

I visited that site based on Jeph Jacques's recommendation. And it's not teaching a man to fish...he already knows how to fish. He just needs a loan to buy the net Wink

Kiva lends to the "working poor." When you choose an entrepreneur to lend to, they send your money (along with that of others who are lending to that person/group) to a selected microfinance institution which then disburses the money to the loan recipient(s). They then have a period in which they pay back the loan. As the loan is repaid, the money returns to your Kiva account and you can then withdraw it, donate it to Kiva for expenses, or relend it.

http://www.kiva.org/about explains it better Smile

People who are too poor to donate to me are probably too poor to lend at Kiva. But those of you who have a little extra to share, I say do it. I can't right now, and I'll explain in a blog post a little later.

I wouldn't be able to give much, but I think a lending team is a great idea. Is there a minimum lend amount?

lending amount is $25

Is there any way to combine money if you're in a group? Like, if 3 of us could only donate $10, would that combine to be above the minimum or are you always counted separately?

I'm pretty sure. You make your loan and then can give the team credit for that loan.

RE: no loans available...they are constantly adding loans all the time. I think it's amazing that they are getting filled so quickly! As far as making interest...that seems like more of a tax hassle than I would like to deal with. *lazy*

I loved this site when I found it, and I keep dreaming that I'll be able to contribute one day. Maybe joining a group would make that possible.

Nice idea, but it looks like they've filled all their current loans. Check out www.prosper.com it's a similar idea except the money is a general loan, not a business loan and you can review people's credit. You also make interest.
