Another one crawls out of the rafters

I've been reading the Intimate History since about Chapter 19 of Macca's story, but have been far too shy to come out and introduce myself until now.

Hi. I'm a village girl from the Eastern Midwestern United States, currently a sophomore at a small liberal arts college and an unrepentant nerd. My parents are professors of physics and mathematics at a different small liberal arts college, making me a number brat but netting me a nice tuition bonus to come here. I'm twenty years old as of this past December--I was nineteen when I first encountered this place--and planning to major in Japanese Studies. I have one younger sister, age sixteen, with whom I share and talk about nearly everything (this is one of the few exceptions, out of respect to MeiLin's wishes), and two cats. In my spare time, I like to read, write (a little), draw, sing, voice act, watch movies/certain TV shows on DVD, read webcomics/serials, and do various nerdy activities with my friends, like playing D&D.

Oh, and I originally came here from MU, but I prefer the History by a long shot. Maybe because I'm here for the story and not just for the sex? I don't know. But I do know that MeiLin's characters and world appeal to me in ways beyond measure, and that I wait with bated breath for each update.

Anyway, if you guys want to know more, feel free to ask. I'll answer if I can.

"Baited breath" conjures up a very different mental image for me. Wink Thanks for the welcome, MeiLin, I'm quite happy to be here.

I came here from ToMU also. Like Taslin I think that AIHotGK is much more enjoyable. I had not really thought about it much but seeing someone else say it got me thinking.

I think that ToMU used to be a lot better, but at some point AE seems to have lost track of what made it good. I sporadically go back and catch up on ToMU and a lot of the story is just silliness that might be fun to write, but (IMO) is boring to read. I also started to feel like the lives of the characters in ToMU is nothing to care about.

In contrast I feel like AIHotGK offers something more interesting. The story moves faster which keeps me from feeling like I wasted ten minutes reading about someone brushing their teeth. Some of the history readings (teacher and temmin) are the best parts of the story. They have conflict and urgency. The characters need/desire something and must fight for it. It's exciting.

In the Hobbit Tolkien wrote:

"Now it is a strange thing, but things that are good to have and days that are good to spend are soon told about, and not much to listen to; while things that are uncomfortable, palpitating, and even gruesome, may make a good tale, and take a deal of telling anyway."

I think that is a true and insightful statement. I think it could also be expanded to include mundane and trivial as things that are also "not much to listen to."

PS: Hi and welcome.

I couldn't agree more.

And thanks for the welcome. Smile
