Donation challenge: make Meilin REAL

...like the Velveteen Rabbit: I challenge you all to donate one dollar to increase the number of donators and thereby get the ubiquitous "them" to take Meilin's site, and writing, more seriously. I will match every dollar donation that comes in before midnight, Pacific Time, on December 1st. Let's see if we can break my bank with 100 donors.

You can count me in as 1. I want to make Mei a real boy too. Um I mean author :).

We just have to get her to understand that. Smile

So, up the count by another $5. Yes, f-i-v-e. I don't even have a job right now, but I can't face Thanksgiving knowing MeiLin is struggling emotionally and financially, when apparently, 2 measly cans of Coke and a pack cigarettes I shouldn't be smoking anyway can fix that. So here's my $5.

To those who are saying "after Christmas".... would you tell your paper delivery person that? What about the co- worker who always manages to brighten your day? Would you tell them to "wait until after Christmas" for a $2 Christmas card? MeiLin puts many many hours of blood sweat and tears (not to mention the BPAL perfooms and hair-pulling) into producing this tale for us. If we can't show her that we appreciate it, especially for American readers this week... well I'll stop there. (I know not to say anything if I can't say something nice.)

I am not "struggling" financially. I have a roof over my head, food to eat, power, internet and heat. All the basics. Things are tight, but not so tight that I can't buy a little perfoom and we can't go down to the caffeine bureau for a cuppa. If you have to choose between giving $$ to the local food bank and me, give it to the food bank. Srsly. Tell me you gave $$ to the food bank and that counts in my book (but not manoki's).

I do, however, have to justify all the time I put into this. It takes a huge chunk out of things I could be doing for Sir and the kids. I can't spend this kind of time on a hobby.

Carl's picture

I don't get paid 'til the first, but I'll throw in for the first time if you hold off until midnight on the 2nd of December.

Carl's picture

Nevermind saw that you were matching just one dollar hehe. I'll throw in a dollar now.

There's another dollar fore you to match. Enjoy Meilin

I'm just waiting on [insert complicated I have money in too many places and need to move it around story here] and then will donate. Should take only a day or two- that's how long Pending Bank Transfers usually take, at least- and then I can donate. Though I won't up the donor count any, since I did the same thing last month. MeiLin Love

I has the checking account, but my mom STILL won't let me get a credit card. I have no credit. At all. Boo Sad I'm in college, I have a job (formerly two), I keep track of my own money. I'm not an IDIOT. I won't build up credit card debt, no matter how many times people in my family tell me "Oh, but you'll be tempted to spend more than you have." Um, no. But thanks, for all the faith. Kinda. Sorta. Not. -fumes-

...ignore the mini-rant. The economy just makes me nervous. I want credit Sad IT'S CALLED THE CREDIT CRUNCH FOR A REASON, YOU CRAZY LADY.

...done now. I swear.

If you do some looking around online you can probably find some evidence to support what I'm about to assert: One of the components of a good credit score (very important for getting good rates on a car loan, mortgage, etc) is having a history of well-managed credit. The only thing that will built that history is time. Thus, having one card that you barely use is an excellent idea. Running scared from it will hurt you later on (you know that, I think, but try to explain it to them).

Are you 18 yet? You can probably get one without your parent's permission. If you aren't, hopefully you aren't reading this story >.> If you are still trying to honor their wishes, see if you can talk them into getting a card where they put you on the card, set the limit to $500 (or $1000, or $100, and this is why it has to be in their name) and then you loan them that amount to put in a reserve in case you ever get yourself in trouble, tempted to spend more than you have. We know you won't. They have proof until then. If they're slightly more trusting, a different route is your own card, you set your own limit so it can't 'accidentally' overdraw, then you keep the money in a separate account.

Do be careful if you try either idea, tho...overlimit fees can be nasty, and they can still elect to allow the charge at their discretion, then still charge you the overlimit fee and collect the full charge...make sure you keep a sharp eye on your limit, and give any payments an extra week to clear (or check online to ensure they clear).

Aw, thanks for the help Smile Yes, I'm 19, and could apply for my own card if I wanted one; I've got a nice history at Bank of America and they've got some student-friendly deals. I do technically have a card in my name under my mother's account that I use to get home from the airport on school vacations and to buy my plane tickets and such, but I don't use it without her permission. The argument they tend to use is "you'll have plenty of time later on to get a credit card" which FAILS AS AN ARGUMENT. Really hard.

V's picture

for a mortgage at age 26, one of the flags on my credit report (damn right I checked first) was "insufficient credit history" and I still had the card I got (in my name) at age 18. Explain that you hope to be a homeowner some time in the next decade, so it's already too late for the best score.

seriously.

Since Sears has brought it back, and KMart never stopped it - LAYAWAY. Gee - and just in time for christmas shopping. Convenient, huh? (I'll take a gas grill, patio furniture, OH - you need to shop for YOUR parents, huh? Dang)

That was actually a taught lesson when The Mister F was in HS. Use layaway to build credit history. Barring that, one of the low limit cards is a good idea.

I took out a 5 a month you match whatever you match , just wanted to say that meilin has provided me with at least 5 dollars a month of entertainment, I think that alone she offers more entertainment than a lot of things I choose to spend my disposable income on. When I think about it like that 5 a month seems paltry.

Halloo! Since the last total was marked at $19 I figured $11 would be a good amount to donate in thanks for this continuing stoooooory of a bunch of space swine exploring the stars... ack, wait.

*thwack* *spzork* Got it.

Ahem. Anyway, I like numbers ending in 0 so thought $11 would be a fun addition to $19. I'm weird about numbers that way. (I have an odd liking for the number 60 because it's the first number evenly divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5!) And my donation now makes the total with match $60. Perfect!

I might be able to figure it out if I worked at it, but instead I'll just ask: why would 61 be "perfect"? I'm afraid I don't get your reference.

There's a theory of "perfect numbers" I learned in computer science, but 61 isn't one of them. To quote Wikipedia: "In mathematics, a perfect number is defined as a positive integer which is the sum of its proper positive divisors, that is, the sum of the positive divisors excluding the number itself."

So 6 is a perfect number. The factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3 and 6. You exclude 6, because that's the number. 1 + 2 + 3 = 6. Voila, perfect number.

61 is prime, so its factors are 1 and 61. Leaving out 61, that leaves 1. So I guess this is a different geeky perfect number? Biggrin

Katie's picture

it's just perfect cuz if it's 61, it means another person has donated.

Well...it WAS my original intention just to match a single dollar donation from each donor, but now I have a new idea: I will match everything that's donated if we get, between when I originally proposed this challenge and Monday at midnight:

3 subscribers (of at least one dollar a month) AND
30 donations of a least one dollar by people who haven't donated before

My aim is to increase the number of donors, even in small amounts. Seems to me that we already have one of the subscriptions and maybe a quarter of the way to the new donations.

Meilin? I hope this isn't too much bookkeeping for you...

P.S., I'm female, that's my preg-o-lantern belly on my avatar. Smile

(Why don't they make good musicals like Evita any more?)

Anyways, just added my lunch money to the pot. I'm a cheapskate & a teetotaler so really *don't* spend money on anything (being newlywed, not long out of college, and a young farmer encourages my native miserliness) except for a candy bar once a month and once a year, the revived Doctor Who season soundtrack and DVD set. I guess that's my indirect way of saying that I think the History is as good as a couple episodes of the new Who Wink

I LOVE that musical. I saw it live on stage in Los Angeles many, many, MANY years ago, not long after its original Broadway run. Hope it's not rolling out too much, though we just bought our Thanksgiving dinner and oy.

As good as New Who?! My goodness. If you've been playing at home you know that that's what broke me open for some reason, so that's high praise. Thank you!

I realized that if I have $1 disappear from my account each week, it isn't going to hurt anything. I get paid weekly. $1 is 4 minutes of work. $1/week is not going to change my financial situation any, it might as well help someone else's. Besides, if I find I'm really needing that dollar, I'll come in to work a minute earlier each day. Smile
When things get better for my little family, I may be able to increase the donation.

Edited to add: I just noticed my subscription filled the challenge! Yay!

manoki's picture

Supplicant

If I had known it would be that easy I would have demanded five new subscriptions! Now we just need 30 new donations of at least 1 dollar. How many of those do we have so far, Meilin?

Five more days, everyone!

MeiLin's picture

Most High

I could SWEAR I posted this, but apparently not.

It's REALLY HARD for me to keep track of who's a new donor and who isn't, so I'm not sure about that. In terms of subscriptions, we now have 3 new subscriptions of $1 and $5, some a week, some a month, and one new subscription that's going to blow you away when I validate it, probably Friday.

manoki's picture

Supplicant

...but I'm glad you got a "blow-me-away" subscription! How about 30 donors (new or not)?

MeiLin's picture

I'd say maybe a third are new but I don't know for sure.

manoki's picture

Having met the 3 subscriptions, the remaining goal for full matching is 30 donations of any kind. And if you don't get that, I'll still match one dollar for every donation.

i don't ever talk, i've been here for months, and i'm running a family of 4 on a single income.... but i think i can manage $1. i'm sorry it cant be more. but look for me come tax time, and ill have something more substantial then

MeiLin's picture

Right now, about 5% of the audience supports me. I'd like to get that up to 10%, which is public radio levels.

Seriously, if I just got a regular dollar from a whole lotta folks, that'd be AWESOME, even more awesome than a bunch of dollars from a just a few folks (though that is also *very* awesome and appreciated) because it shows me that people care enough to pay. It just takes the occasional dollar from a larger number of folks to support me. That's all. If all my readers gave me just $1 a month, that'd be $1000! Even if only half of them gave $1, that'd be $500, which is more than I make now.

Some people give more. Some people give a lot more. But everyone who hasn't chosen to support me should know: It just takes one dollar, four quarters out of your change jar, every now and again, not even every month. I only ask for the $1--to let people know that they don't need to be a celebrity or a rich person to support an artist, and to let people know that it's more than money in my pocket, it's validation.

And PS: THANK YOU!!!
