I'll be part of the late night erotica reading at Orycon 30 here in Portland in November. Darklady (old friend) is organizing the panel and asked me to read. I have NEVER, EVER read ANY of my own fiction out loud, let alone the naughty bits. I'm not sure I'll be able to get through it, and I know I won't be able to get through it without turning bright, bright red and staying that way. But, you know, she asked, and I need to get the story out there.
AAGH! WHAT HAVE I DONE!
*ahem*
OK. She says it's a pretty small group; it's not like I'll be reading to a ballroom. Breathe, Mei, you can do this...
So. Now I need help picking out a section that stands at least somewhat on its own and that might be a good introduction to the serial. A has already suggested Neya's Day because it has magic as well as sex in it. What do you guys suggest? Bonus stories are also eligible.
Anyway, if you've ever wanted to meet me, and Sir too, we'll both be at Orycon throughout that weekend and at that reading in particular. I'll have a small handful of books to sell and I'll autograph one if you already have it.

Wow!
You're a far braver man than I. Props for agreeing to do that
.
I think the Neya's Day would be good - as far as I remember there was a bit of Temmin's goofiness in it too, which I really closely associate with the story
I'm wishing I lived near Portland, hahaha. I'd be there as a staunch (albeit also very red-faced as soon as you hit the erotica
) supporter. I'm sure you'll be fine and attract loads of people to the story
.
Everyone's a braver man than I am
I was born, and remain, female.
:)
I would love to see some readers there, but I totally don't expect any. I will get a smattering of polite applause and slink off to my corner to sit, red-faced, while Sir fans me with a program. If you do show up, though, I promise to wear Death Cap and let you sniff my fabulous wrist.
Me too, haha
That would pretty much be the highlight of my month, hahaha, but unfortunately I'm in pharmacy school and not so able to take big trips to cons, however much I might wish to.
I'm sure you'll get more than a smattering of applause though
.
What?!
Finally, someone is attending a con in my neck of the woods? (Besides the Girl Genius folks....) If only it weren't $50, and more importantly, right in the middle of NaNoWriMo. (This'll be my seventh year doing it!)
Best of luck with your reading, though! I love to hear authors reading their own works. It lets you hear exactly how the text was meant to sound. Punctuation and word choice can do so much, but there's always a little bit of room left for interpretation.
how cool is that!?!
You rock, Meilin! I'm sure you'll do very well. Practice reading out loud before you go. I wish I could be there to hear it.
Sounds fun
Good luck MeiLin, looks like it should be fun. Not sure if I will be able to make it but I will try. Let us know what day your panel is on.
Podcast? Wav?
Could we possibly get a podcast or something of that? Or maybe you could record a practice reading and put it up for download as a wav file or something? I would love to hear you read! But alas, I live in the boonies.
If you are so sure you will die of blushing definately do some practice reading, first by yourself with a mirror then with sir then with some other people(like a small group- or an open-mic night at your local coffee-house). I know I at least consider public-speaking to be right up there with waterboarding on the torture-scale. Maybe one of the slightly less naughty of the naughty bits would be easier... although if it is supposed to be an erotic reading... you might get more snickers for being tame than risque.
it's supposed to be erotic
And I just found out that it's not an unofficial thing, it's an official Orycon event. The way Sir always talked about it, I thought it was a handful of people in a private room at the con. Oh, no. He says at least 50 people in an official room, on the program, the whole ball of wax. I'm officially insane.
We had contemplated a podcast, and in fact were recruiting a friend to do the reading. Sir wanted me to have someone else read it because we had been trying to keep my RL identity separate from my writing identity, and I used to read things aloud for a living. I'm less and less concerned with that as time goes by, though. So that may be a possibility. I have a mic and I'm getting a new laptop **tomorrow** squeal! so it might be much easier. We'll see.
If you have a Mac ...
... it will be easy to record it. I think you're wrong about the smattering of polite applause thing. I expect you will have groupies crowding around you wanting desperately to meet you! Oops, that probably will make you MORE self-conscious.
*shutting up now*
Mac and Ubuntu household
Getting a refurbished MacBook 2.4 Ghz 2G/160G and a new networkable duplex all-in-one printer. It's what the Paid Gig paid for. That $$ was initially earmarked for taxes, but then the backlight on my 3-plus-year-old iBook started to fail. And I can't make more $$ without my laptop. In fact, I can't function without my laptop. If I'd been born 100 years ago I don't know what I'd've done.
Edit: Groupies?! ha! I imagine if anyone there has actually heard of me, they'd look at me and go, "THAT'S HER?!"
Too far, too shy
Given that I'll be an ocean away from the Con, and probably wouldn't attend an erotica reading anyway (for fear of lighting up the room with all the blushing), I shouldn't say anything.
...Nevertheless...
... I'd say hook them up with Fen and Arta's story (Scenes of a courtship)! It's very sweet - but erotic, stand-alone yet hinting at a bigger picture, and it has all the wit and humor and real-life-likeness of the Tales. What it may lack, to be really representative, is the darker tones of some chapters... Depends on the reaction you want the audience to have, I suppose.
"Neya's Day" was very intense for me: lots of discoveries, even more new questions, bewildering sex... I'm not sure I'd like to be thrown in hot water like that, without having read the beginning of the story. But that may be just me =)
Suggestions
I reserve the right to spam more after thinking about it
But the first that comes to mind: Book 2 Ch 14, Harsin and Twenna.
1) It has lots of steamy-hot sex in it. (BLUSH, Mei-mei!)
2) It has some truly delightful wordplay and banter
3) It gives the audience bold characters...love them or hate them, you get CURIOUS. It makes you wonder what's going on.
4) It doesn't give away any critical plot developments or spoil serious climaxes in the story (which is why I wouldn't recommend Neya's day)
5) It has lots of steamy-hot sex in it
It doesn't have any magic, but it (or any) reading might be improved if you opened with the series prologue.
Hmm. Pulling that thread...start with the prologue (which ends with the red book), then find a good excerpt from the red book. Maybe a cutscene of Emmae getting cursed, then her first night with Warrin when he doesn't know what's going on, and she's helpless/thrilled. A bit kinkier, early in the series, and both magical and erotic.
Something from Temmin's introduction to the temple could be good...introducing Anda and Bessa, or maybe the scene where Bessa gets dominated in public
why am I not surprised
that you have suggestions?
