Hello, everyone...!

Hello, all! I've just recently read my way through the archives of the story, and have started to immerse myself into the archives of the forum, and so I thought I'd say hello!

In real life, I'm a college student in the (slightly) south-eastern United States, English major, and absolute reading fanatic. Outside of my regular college duties (which, being said English major, already constitute a lot of reading, but also some tom foolery and shenanigans,) it's pretty much all I do. I've only recently become aware of the concept of web serials at all, and I found my way here from Tales of Mu. To let you know a little bit about my tastes, I'll say that the number one spot for "Favorite Author" for me is a toss up between the honorable J.R.R. Tolkien (pre-movies, thank you!) and the delicate Lady Charlotte Bronte.

MeiLin, your writing is just lovely. I especially enjoy your development of character, particularly in the actual histories. Even though we have far less time to get to know them, often the personalities contained within them resonate most strongly with me. Your style is just up my alley, and you've kept me interested from chapter one. (Your blog posts are interesting as well, and make me want to get into BPAL nownownow!)

Thank you for sharing your work with us; it's definitely brightened my day on numerous occasions already, and I look forward to many such occurrences in the future!

slightly south, or slightly eastern?

I'm slightly in the south, but quite to the east for school.

Slightly south, very east. "Carry me back to old Virginny" and all that. Blum 3

took me a while to stumble back over this post--but I, too, am in old virginny for school.

Thank you for liking the story so much, and welcome to the madness. Smile

I also only discovered serials within the last year [I think there was one I read two years ago that abruptly discontinued and I forgot about them for a while]. As a fellow reading fanatic I adore them, It's like having a magically updating library with me whenever I'm near the computer, especially if I need to be paying a little attention to the computer while something chugs along in the background.

The literature inspired oils are what got me into BPAL a few years ago. I'm sure they're lovely even without the background, but I think any one who has read most of the influences gets even more out of the whole experience.

I will HAVE to try those... are there any that you particularly recommend that they're still making?

Woman, there are almost 2,000 BPALs! To recommend one we'd need to know what kind of scent notes you like--vanilla? Citrus? Musk? Woods? Greens? Foodies? eh?

Good call. I'm actually absolutely overwhelmed by the embarrassment of riches over there, so I don't even know where to start. I THINK if I had to guess I'd say a mix of musk, woods, greens, and flowers? I like darker scents, and try to lean towards sophisticated rather than bright or sweet. I know that leaves a LOT open, but just looking at the site myself, I don't think I'll ever be able to even choose some imps to start with!

I recommend spending some time to go through their catalog and making note of the ones that the notes sound like possibilities to you. What I did was just copy them by pages into a Word document and deleted the extra descriptions (which are always fabulous, btw) and the ones that would probably not work on me. Then after I had a 9 page document at arial size 7.5 and two columns per page, I went through again and picked out the notes I was guessing would be best on me or just sounded like I had to sniff them. Yeah, it's a 7 page document, but still, that's better than before. Now you have a list of scents you're interested in.

Pick a few (around 10 or so) that you are most interested in trying first (preferably ones with different notes to get an idea how they work with you - i.e. try not to go after 10 variants of rose perfumes to start) and then look around for used imps in the different lj communities or on ebay or the BPAL forums. Once you've tried out a few and have an idea of what notes work better for you, then put in an order to the lab (I hope to be able to by Christmas!)

I'm cheap and have no income right now (slow Michigan economy FTL) so this makes it not completely unaffordable for me and that way some unloved imps find a good home or another stopping point on their journey to their own forever homes. (A few that I thought would be terrific, while great in the bottle, just aren't for me to wear.)

And just a random fact - I'd been wanting to get into BPAL for quite a while and when I finally starting reading through the scents, it was Blood Kiss that convinced me that I absolutely couldn't wait any longer to try out BPAL. No, it's not my favorite of the ones I've gotten (that was #20 Love Oil), but I'll never forget which description started me on my BPAL journey.

I love sniff-pretties. ^_^

since I didn't want to swamp you after I saw all the replies to this.

But specifically, I was thinking of the following categories:
Neil Gaiman [eponymous; American Gods/Anansi Boys]
Good Omens [Pratchett/Gaiman]
Stardust [more Gaiman!]
Mad Tea Party [Carroll]
Illyria [Shakespeare]
A Picnic in Arkham [Lovecraft]

The Salon series is also based of various specific works of visual art.

All of the literature inspired oils are designed around characters or specific scenes, and most of them really hit the nail on the head.
The Illyria ones strike me the most, because the characters are often a little more complicated than your typical archetype, and there are a few scents for the more treacherous characters that would smell lovely if you weren't to associate it with anything, and then take on a whole new level when you tie it with its respective character. Little things like that are what make it an 'experience' for me more than just a pretty smell.

I am wearing Mama-ji as I type. I've always described it as starting out smelling like dangerous sex in a spice shop, then mellowing to a comforting, almost motherly smell. So very Mama-Ji.

Of those categories, I have had the most luck with Tea Party and Gaiman. From the former, I adore Alice (tart cherries fading to a soft girlish floral--I love it so hard), Mouse's Long and Sad Tale (sweet peas), Eat Me (the BEST CAKE EVAR), the Dormouse (sleepy tea!), White Rabbit (tea and fur--this is Arta's scent, btw--this is one of my "comfort" scents when I'm not feeling well), Two, Five and Seven (just the best rose BPAL does) and Mad Hatter (a very intriguing man's scent--lavender, musk and pennyroyal).

From Gaiman, it's Mama-Ji, Lady Una (heartbreakingly beautiful musk with spices, vanilla and green tea), Fairy Wine (green and mysterious--BPAL's dandelion note is so so right), and Tristran (fresh sweat on a sweet boy).

Thank you so much for talking about BPAL all the time, heh; I could not be more excited. I'm compiling the master document as has been suggested, and once I work my way through to find things that intrigue me, I'll either be treating myself or hitting up my dearest darlings for some long-due favors and return of lent money. SO. EXCITED. Perfumes have always intrigued me, but I've never had the time, money, or proper source to really get into them. Thank you, everyone, for all your advice!

...which Gaiman described on his blog as making you smell like a "sexy vampire apple." I thought, ok fine, I've been hearing about this stuff, that settles it. Nary a year later, I have six imp boxes and two bottle boxes and I STILL don't have SGA!

It's a rare, coveted bottle now, but I have in my possession an almost-as-coveted bottle of Glowing Vulva at Ryogoku Bridge (I don't make this stuff up, kids) that I like but I don't love. I might be willing to sacrifice it in a trade. MIGHT be.

absolutely love to test out both of those. I'm not sure that either would be great on me, but I'd love to say that I've worn Glowing Vulva and SGN (though not at the same time, I don't think.)

I am so excited now. This might just have to become my new method of procrastination. Thank you for your advice, and the warm welcome!

Reading MeiLin or browsing BPAL?

And yes, welcome! Good to have you on board.

I was referring at the time to browsing BPAL, but now that you mention it, delving into the story and the forums is most assuredly on that list, too! Thanks for the welcome. Biggrin
