Virus time again

Hey everyone its that time again when I go crazy and want to spend money (aka payday is coming), therefore I need your help to donate some money to Melin and to our art project. This time I have a poem for you, just don't mind me its bad, but I'm not a writer I'm a scientist. Since you guys guessed so fast last time I will be shortening the schedule some what. However as there are two artists I will be starting higher as well. So here goes

In 1 hr - $100
In 8 hr - $75
In 16 hr - $50
In 24 hr - $25
In 48 hr - $15
By next Tuesday - $5

Four I am
Just one and fine you will be
Any before the other and at risk you are
Death is not uncommon
Fluids your life can save
A fever and low platelets maybe all you see
For most the flu you will blame
Who am I?

Good luck and most of all have fun.

In many ways I believe you are. I just hope I didn't make it too hard this time, but there do seem to be some virus minded people around here.

Shot in the dark... Anthrax?

viruslife's picture

Supplicant

Anthrax is actually a bacteria but good guess.

Now there is a good family of viruses, can cause a cancer like condition or food poisoning. But nope not it.

MMRV?

Not sure what you mean by this?

Measels, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella

4 diseases, at least some of which are viral, sometimes one vaccine avoids 'em all.

Ah got it. Good guess but no.

edit: damn... not fast enough

MRSA is actually a very nasty human made nastier bacteria but good guess.

Jagroq's picture

I think this is a bacteria not a virus but I'm gonna guess.. meningitis?

viruslife's picture

Supplicant

Meningitis can be either bacterial or viral, as its a condition of the lining of the brain becoming inflamed rather than one agent. But good guess

I'm pretty sure this isn't right, but Viral hemorrhagic fevers is the best I can come up with from Google.

viruslife's picture

These can be caused by many different viruses, but very close.

Drew Daniels's picture

I want to say HSV, but I think there are only two of those... not four

viruslife's picture

A very interesting family of virus these tend to become part of you for the rest of your life. Good guess but no.

Dengue Fever
(DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, or DEN-4).

MeiLin's picture

I have no idea if you're right, but looking at wikipedia it's a really good guess.

Kimocean's picture

I wish I'd come up with it a few minutes earlier! I had looked at it but couldn't find the part about 2 being worse than just one so I skipped over it initially. It kept coming up when I searched about low platelets though so I took a closer look and wikipedia was the place I found the confirmation.

Dengue, you got it. If you get the wrong combination of infections it does cause hemorrhagic fever, otherwise known as DHF. However if you don't get that magical combination it can cause flu like symptoms, or just a high fever with low platelets. Its a very interesting group to study. I'm very glad someone got it.

I had it 13 years ago--not fun!! I didn't know what I had, either, because I got it on a trip to Jamaica and then came home to the States where the doctors had no idea what it was. I had dermatology residents taking photos and wanting to take skin samples; infectious disease specialists poking and prodding with needles, and a string of interns and attendings crowding in for a look at the exotic case... and I'm worried about going back to the tropics because I've heard that there are four strains of Dengue and if you get the same one twice it can kill you.

Chances are you got 2 which if you get another one you should be fine and it is the most common one out there. The risk if I remember correctly (so don't quote me on this) is getting 3 and then getting 4. Where as if you get 4 then 3 you would be fine. But its just the one combination that I know of that is deadly and that only 50% of the time. So you should be fine and just enjoy yourself (maybe look out for those pesky mosquitoes.
