My Jaw Hurts...

I'm new here and I didn't if this was the right area to put my complaints about my tooth removal or not. Oh, well.

I got all of my wisdom teeth taken out today and my pain killers aren't working that well and I'm tired and crabby and can't stop writing this stupid run-on sentence. Anyway, I thought reading ch 17 would make me feel better, as well as hopefully getting some pity Wink I don't actually need it though, my parents are slaving away for me. MUWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHaaaa (sigh)

The first thing I thought when I read the title of your post in my RSS feed was, "You go!" The second was, "Switch to your hands." Wink

I think MeiLin is corrupting me.

Yeah. That's what it is. Biggrin

Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome I-m so happy And if I was in 'happier' (I mean 'better') mood, I probably would have thought of it that way, too.

Thoughts from she who got all her wisdom teeth out a month ago:

-Keep them clean. Infections won't help the irritation Biggrin

-Keep them COLD. If you can have a continuous stream of icepacks attached to your face, so much the better. This helps swelling (if you have any) too.

-Keep moving your jaw. I know, it hurts like all hell, but the more you try to convince your jaw to open, the faster it will be able to. My dad was the one who told me this, and I sulked, cause I looked ridiculous trying to pry my jaw open with my fingers without wincing, but it did work.

-Yoghurt. Milkshakes. Yoghurt. Soup (COLD soup). Oh, and more yoghurt.

-Leave it alone. I know it feels weird, but don't poke it (this will apply more later on, when poking doesn't hurt anymore)

Sorry. I know some of those are repetitive. The cold and the jaw movement are key, though, if I had to pick two.

That all being said, I had a relatively painless experience; I was eating solid (if very small and squishy) food such as gnocchi and caprese within three days, and I looked far worse then I felt. That probably saved me, since they only gave me enough painkillers for about a day and a half. It sounds like yours didn't work out as well, though, for which I offer love, snuggles, hugs, and no nonsequiturs about the corrupting influence of MeiLin Biggrin

Do not, under any except the most dire of circumstances (like a heavy infection), remove or clean out the blood clots from the gaping holes where your teeth used to be. That way lies nothing but exquisite agony.

Also, when you apply cold, and you should, apply it to the SIDES of your jaws, NOT the UNDERSIDES. Your salivary glands will thank you.

(/me is married to a dentist and knows more about this stuff than he cares to.)

My dentist told me they were necessary for the healing, so I won't. I'm sorry that you know more than wanted Smile

Arath's picture

I don't really have a lot of swelling, because I have a load of meds, and until I stop feeling sick, I don't think I'll do anything else. Other than that, thanks for the concern Smile

I cannot agree more on keeping your jaw moving. It IS possible to wind up with something akin to lockjaw from muscle atrophy, and I came pretty close to that when I had my 3 impacted wisdom teeth out (prying my mouth apart with my fingers for 90 seconds x 5 times x every hour, not so fun). That was probably the worst part of it (besides discovering a very itchy allergy to Percocet). Though, if you've been vomiting (saw this in a comment) and taking pain meds, there may be a correlation to examine. Good luck!

At least in theory (As I have not experienced anything to the contrary) paint lets you know you are alive.
My wife rather hates me for this feeling as I do stupid things like not take pain medication for surgery and the like. Yes I am a bit of a masochist (and a sadist too but I really try to control that unless the recipient is after a bit of fun) but if you make the small mental shift, pain can be quite enjoyable. In stead of concentrating on how your body wants you to respond to the stimulus, try to explore what is going on. Accept the sensation and try to relax. You will still hurt like hell but I think you will find that it will lessen the over all effect that the stimulus has on your entire system and the effect will become much more compartmentalized.

I think if I did anything of the like right now, I'd probably throw up. Which is what I've been doing lately, so, until then, no unnecessary poking of things in my mouth (that's what I did when my teeth were still coming out from underneath the gum.) It was fun until I started doing it unconciously and then I couldn't stop - I'd be reading a book or something and then suddenly realize that my hand was in my mouth... which made my gum sore for like four hours and I wouldn't be able to eat without saying "ow." Foods more important to me than masochisic-boredom, most of the time.

I had all four out several years ago. I recommend sleeping a lot. If your painkillers aren't working, complain to the dentist. If they gave you some crap like tylenol and codeine that isn't sufficient. If you are in the U.S. most of the medical professionals don't like giving adequate pain management due to misguided fears of addiction. I had some Vicodin ES and when that ran out and I was still in pain (a week later) I demanded another prescription. I felt worse after the IV drugs left my system in 2 days so be aware of that.

I hope you have a better experience that I did since I have a very high tolerance to opiates. *hugs*

Arath's picture

I'm fine now, basically, other than not being able to eat anything. If these meds don't work, I got some left overs from my absess tooth incident to hold me over Wink

I'm getting my wisdom teeth out this Friday. I'm lucky in that I only have two, and neither of them have roots. Still not looking forward to the experience. I'll be keeping all of this advice in mind for sure.

Wisdom teeth are out.

OW.

I couldn't keep anything down for the first 24 hours, including pain meds. Now I feel fine (except for the gaping holes in my mouth), and as long as I stick to regular Tylenol, I can do whatever I want today. Yay!

Arath's picture

but I had more taken out than you did. Glad you're getting better Smile

Thank you. ^-^ Today has gone really well. My face is definitely still swollen, although I haven't quite achieved chipmunk-cheeked status.

I was told my face looked swollen, but I didn't notice the difference. Have you read Sandra's other works?

I know I am intruding, but I have. Oh, what I wouldn't give for her to update 5ideways more frequently!

Arath's picture

Is it back up? I haven't checked in a couple days and for the past month or so, 5ideways has been down. On her LJ, she mentioned fixing it, but, as stated earlier, I haven't checked.

It's not and it makes me sad. Sad

It was so different and dark compared to her other works, I really liked it. Ah well, FH will have to do for now I-m so happy

is a spin-off of her older comic Boy Meets Boy, which finished up about four and a half years ago.

Her other current major work, which is currently down, is Sideways

Each has its own variation of the awesome, charm, and brilliance that you can expect from Sandra.

I /adored/ Boy Meets Boy, even though I was too young to really enjoy it at the time. A while ago I went through the archives again...it's astounding to watch Sandra's art progress, and it keeps getting better. I've been reading Friendly Hostility since it started...WOW it's been a long time.
