So, this happened: Kickstarter money bomb (updated x2)

Update 1: I've decided on some non-tangible bonuses in the form of high-res character study art from Alice Fox's original set. The tangibles are starting to cut into money I actually need. So if you're curious, check the Kickstarter page.

---

The Kickstarter is at $3,000-plus. I got money bombed this morning with a $1000 donation, a $250 donation and a bunch of smaller donations. "Smaller" being relative at present. Shocked

So now all the bonuses have been unlocked; all Kickers get a high-res digital file of the world map; Kickers at $30 and above (and the $25-and-up presalers) get the audiobook of "Lovers and Beloveds" and the rewritten prequel set of stories from Temmin's childhood (tentatively titled "Whithorse Stories"); Kickers above $100 get a printed poster of the world map--I hope. That last is dependent upon printing costs. I haven't priced it out yet.

I need new bonuses. Suggestions so far:

--Bookmarks. I'm definitely doing this. They'll be exclusive artwork and available only to Kickers and presalers.

--Incense. This would have to be if we go way over where we are now. Where we are now, as awesome as it is, will mostly go toward audio gear and map printing costs. Neya's incense is white flowers--tuberose, gardenias, etc.--and something bitter like myrrh; Nerr's is resins and woods with the bitterness. Sadly (?), it would not be hallucinogenic.

Other ideas? T-shirts?

I'm not expecting to go to $4,000. Though at this rate, who knows. All of my wildest imaginings have been met and surpassed. I kinda hope I do, because as things stand the extra money is almost eaten up with audio gear, computer upgrades, freelancer fees and printing costs. Not that I'm complaining; the map really needs finishing and I really need the audio gear to do the audiobook/podcast and I really didn't have the money to do either. It'd be nice, though, to have enough left over to tip Netta (she's been there for me every step) and go out to dinner or something. Smile

Update 2: I'm a Staff Pick today on Kickstarter! eee! I think it even got me a couple of backers. If you're still on the fence, check out all the rewards. You get hyooge piles of stuff now. If you're a presaler and want to move your backing to Kickstarter, let me know and I'll refund you when the Kickstarter funds.

Oh, I like the bookmarks idea! Kudos to whoever suggested that!

AT least the audio/podcasting equipment only has to be bought once, as opposed to again for every book. Same for the map, I suppose. Oh, oh, but you could do a city map of Tremont and the immediate area, to follow up on the world (or at least hemisphere) one!

... crazy people rooting for you. I guess we knew that already, but dropping-a-thousand-bucks crazy is carrying this to a whole new level. Awesome! Smile

Sadly (?), it would not be hallucinogenic.

Oh, well, phooey. Blum 3 Still sounds awfully pretty, though.

One thing I'd kind of love to see -- after that write-up you did a while back of a typical Farr's Day -- would be some similar snippets of all the other Gods' Days in Tremont. Would that be too much work for an extra perk, though?

I'm looking at non-tangibles right now--the bonus I settled on was high-res files of Alice Fox's character studies. I like your idea, though, a sort of Tremontine Almanac. Smile

Missed the update part -- that's what I get for skimming too quickly down to tantalizing mentions of bookmarks and incense and such. Wink

But yay for hi-res character studies! (And extra cheers for going over-goal so quick!)

And you deserve it, because you're awesome (and your writing is awesome) Jumpeveryone Keep some of the money for yourself--you deserve a treat, too!

I'm like as blown away as the rest of you guys! You've got the crazy backers to match your crazy good talent! I'm a fan of the incense. I like the smell good as they say.

typical, I'm away for a week and look what I miss. Wow! Awesome indeed!
I Love all the bonus ideas, especially the incense. I'd even buy that. Bringing a whiff of Neya and Nerr into my living room... hey, sounds like hallucinogenic enough for my fragile mind Wink

...along with trading cards, playing cards and bookmarks. We'll see. It may have to wait until I am successful enough to have a personal assistant. Wink

Playing cards! I can just see them in my minds eye, they'd be beautiful.

The art alone, oy! So that's way down the line.

Despite being way down the line, I'd love to see a tarot-style deck, since we see divination with cards in the novels.

...which would be an effing fortune. The images would have to be of the characters, though. That's so, so far down the line.

On a related note, since you are a noted seamstress on the level of Mistress Naister, you may wish to know that I'm going to budget-cosplay a Beloved at this year's Orycon. Smile A Holy Clothing dress (appropriate name) and some accoutrements, probably a Turkish-style vest. Not 100% accurate, but it'll do.

That would be so cool, and I would be so bummed if it were only available to presalers or kick starters. I will be buying the book at some point but can't right now. I collect tarot decks though, and while I usually steer clear of oracle cards I would make a very enthusiastic exception for this.

Pretty much all bonuses will be available at some point down the line to everyone. The cards aren't available to anyone yet and won't be for a long time if ever. We'll see.

Out of curiosity, why are you planning on purchasing audio gear? Are you planning on building a studio to go with it? You probably have your reasons, but it seems like it would be a lot cheaper and easier to use someone else's setup. Bonus if you can get a sound engineer to help out.

...going back to the days of reel-to-reels and splicing with razor blades, grease pencils and tape. I have a fair idea how to do it, and I have some of the gear I need already. Mostly I need some baffling, a boom, an external drive, and some help physically moving stuff around in the basement. VA wants to make me a pop screen, and though I have enough extra money to buy one I'm gonna at least let him try.

You'd be amazed what good sound you can get in basic set-ups. An old acquaintance of mine who did a lot of work for NPR used to record in her blanket-draped closet and got terrific sound. The sound on my video voiceover at Kickstarter isn't too bad (not perfect, but not at the bottom of a thermos bottle either), and I recorded that on my MacBook in Audacity with a Blue Snowball USB mic held in my hand--sitting in my living room, no soundproofing/baffling. I thought it'd be wretched, but it really wasn't.

And no, it really isn't cheaper and easier to use someone else's setup. Studio time goes for $$$, and this is a big book; it's gonna take hours to lay it down. Same with book two.
