"Son in Sorrow" First Draft: Done. I Think.

I powered through the last few scenes of book two, rearranged a bit, and now have a completed draft. I'm going to let it sit for a bit--hey, at least until tomorrow morning--then bung it onto my Kindle and take notes. It reads totally different on a Kindle, you guys. Then when I've worked through those notes I'll send it off to Nettah the Editah. I'm also in touch with ace cover artist Alice Fox about getting some quick concept art so you can see what the cover's going to look like.

So...

I can't quite imagine what that must feel like. Does it feel different than finishing the initial draft of Lovers and Beloveds?

On a more personal note: Yay!

...because there were huge chunks of book one already written. I don't think there's a single bit of book two that's from the original drafts. The story-in-story is brand new--you haven't read it yet. The events take place a year after LaB ends. It's terra incognita. The people who've been sitting this out waiting for me to "get back to where you left off" are going to miss out. If they still remember me when book four comes out, they'll pick it up and go, BUH?! because Temmin won't be 18 any more...and they'll have to go back and start all over...

That sounds wonderful!

And are there only going to be four? I can't remember what has and has not been said on this subject before.

I'm pretty sure there will be at least four. I said "four" because there were three "books" (HA!) in the original serialization, so people expecting I'm on the same trajectory wouldn't check back until four. By which time I'm sure they will have forgotten me considering I seem to do a book a year.

And I don't see how ANYONE could ever forget about this story or your wonderful wordsmith-ery.

At one time, 2,000 people a day came here. Now it's a little over a tenth of that. And they didn't all buy books. Smile

I've got a nice little war chest built up at Project Wonderful and I'm going to do some blitzes.

Well good to know your opinion on these things.

Because calling those who spend their limited time doing other things while waiting patiently for the next book nastywords will surely make them wish to participate in a constructive manner in future.

Hi Meilin! Just so you know, there ARE still occasional visitors who read your (really not that) crappy first draft, and whether they bought the book or not, are waiting to hear word of the revised next. There's been far less reason to participate. For me, it's because I've heard some people hate spoilers, you see.

Keep at it. I'll be back when new fiction starts getting posted.

Thanks for not forgetting me. You're not a bastard. Smile And you can talk about spoilers if you like, just put them in spoiler tags (see "input format" beneath the comment box).

The next book isn't revised; it's 99% new and covers a part of Temmin's life we never got to in the original. I think I re-used maybe three scenes (not chapters) from the original draft, and the story-in-story is 100% new. I just finished editing the first draft yesterday. One more scene to write and it's off to the editor.

In terms of time line, the original three-"book" draft didn't even get through three spokes (about 4.5 months) of 990 KY. "LaB" alone covers that time period and a bit more; "SiS" covers 991 through 992 KY--terra incognita. I'm not sure how much ground book three (tentatively titled "Mentors") will cover, nor what the story-in-story will be, but I'm thinking it'll be at least a year's worth of time, probably starting a few months/spokes after book two ends.

Anyway, thanks for not forgetting me.

Okay, you know how puppies wag their tails and smack them into the ground with excitement? I am totally doing that with my feet. OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG. BOOK TWO YESSSSSSSSS.

Of course, I've been vaguely contemplating a Kindle. Now that I've remembered I could read MLM books on it, I'm much more tempted.

Mei, I hope you're having some well-deserved tea and perhaps chocolate. Biggrin

I am so excited for you. and can't wait for the new book. But Mei, a book a year is far better than Jean Auel... I have to wait up to 10 years for new books from her.

In other words real readers NEVER forget their favorite authors. & yes Mei you rank as one of my fave.
