History book one version two is with Netta

I just now shipped the book off to Netta. Scrivener tells me it is 140,000+ words, 373 pages in paperback. Netta will have a cow. She wants it at around 100k but I'm all right with more as long as it's all supposed to be there. That's Netta's job--to help me figure out if stuff needs chopped out. I'm sure she'll come up with a list. Smile

I'm tired now. I hope to take a break from writing for a week or two. (And this time I mean it.) When I've recovered some equilibrium, I will start in on Scryer's Gulch again.

Thanks, everyone, for the patience and kindness you've shown me while I worked on this. More work to come.

Chopping the story? Nuu! Will there be any way to read the full version after the book comes out?

Don't worry. The stuff I've dropped so far are from scenes that go on too long, scenes that really don't need to be there (filler), and stuff that showed up too soon. There's an entire character that showed up too soon. Not going to even tell you who. S/he'll be in the next book, or possibly the one after.

Ibbit. Let the wild speculation begin!

Nah, she's too central Ansella's story, and I have a hard time seeing MeiLin just letting Ansella sit sans development for a whole book. Maybe Brinnid?

I bet it's Temmin.

Book 2 starts with his gifts, so he's not really introduced anyway. It could be someone at the Lover's Temple, his fighting master...Bern Wallek shows up early in book 2, too, I think.

Dang. I was rereading about 4 chapters in Book 2 for context and reading that + the comments has pretty well convinced me I'm going to have to do a full readthrough in the near future. It'll be a good way to psyche myself up for the new book, and to better appreciate the changes, methinks.

I am ok as long as the twins stay. and Standfast. and Connin.
Other than that, I don't mind if a small character disappears, but if one of two certain people (not listed above) leave my entire idea of where the story is going is blown.

I'm curious, who, if not among the listed?

Devotee

First off is (forgive me for not digging through the books to find the name) the man that Ellika meets at the temple who was beaten who she is helping nurse.
Another (listed) in Connin.
The last is our dear mistress of King Harsin.

EDIT: Bern Wallek for the first one (Who was mentioned before, but I totally missed it. Give me a break, it is 3 am.)

... once in book one, when Harsin announces the wedding between him and Sedra. I'm not sure that counts for much of anything. Still, moving said announcement from book one to book two doesn't sound unreasonable at all.

OTOH, there is actually not all that much going on with Ibbit and Ansella in book one, either, so if one's goal were to tighten up the story a bit, moving Ibbit's introduction closer to the point where she starts to actually matter in the story, namely book three, does make a good amount of sense to me.

... I can't see a thing that's wrong with a book having 373 pages. Except that it might be too short. Blum 3

I routinely read books at least that long, and the one I just finished last night was 796...and it's the 6th one in a set, all equally long. Then there's Robert Jordan's WoT series, all of which are long. George R.R. Martin also writes long ones. Many of the other authors that I like to read have big books, and I really do prefer it that way. I read very fast, so smaller books don't last very long at all.

I can't wait to see the History come out. I have a job interview tomorrow morning, so if I actually get the job, I should be able to purchase a copy!
