finally started my own web serial

Why look, it's yet another start-up weblit story!

I've just started posting a story at http://bovidae.livejournal.com. In terms of genres and labels, I'd describe it as roughly a low magic sword-and-sorcery fantasy set in a late Classical era type milieu.

The official story blurb:
"Strong Heart" is a sword & sorcery fantasy about Joana (Jo to anyone who hasn't pissed her off lately). Jo is female, but her tribe made her officially a man so she could train as a warrior. Now she's a mercenary guard, and life is about to get even more interesting than figuring out how to piss standing up without the right plumbing.

If it takes off, I'll switch over to MeiLin's digitalnovelist service, but for now it's just a personal project. I'm also twittering about the story, weblit, and the occasional baby goat news @caprioxbovidae.

Leave me a comment over at the story and lemme know what you think!

I like it. Good start. But I can't read that one from work because of where the story is currently based...

I will be interested to see how you keep the pacing of each chapter.

Me too! ;-D So far I've been aiming for around 1000 words to make it worthwhile to read and it's working out to be one to two scenes/conversations per post. I didn't intend for it to be 'follow Jo every moment of the day' as has happened so far, but that's how it has worked out while I'm getting all the players on the stage. Within a chapter or two*, I think it will start getting away from that.

*I'd say one chapter, but I know from my fanfic writing days that extra chapters tend to insert themselves into my writing plans as I go along. More material for readers, but harder for me to forecast story progress.

Enjoying it so far...wish I'd waited to start until there was a little more to read. Nyah

Yeah, sorry about that. This isn't going to be one of those Alexandra Erin/early MeiLin/Karen Wehrstein epic daily posting serials. I started out with a biweekly schedule for sanity's sake, but now that I have a few interested readers (yay!), I'm going to work on a weekly update.

I doubt it'll go very far (since engineering school killed all of the creativity I once had and didn't even bother with a decent burial), but you've got me thinking about the story I started back in high school that spawned the name Davik. I doubt I'll produce anything I'm willing to put out for people to read, but you've at least got me looking back on a story line that's been rattling around in my head since 97' Blum 3

Not sure if I should say "sorry" or "you're welcome" to that Wink

It's a nostalgia trip if nothing else. Besides, I can't remember the last time I wrote something that wasn't science related Blum 3

Do keep writing it!

Word of advice: don't suggest that you'll switch from a biweekly to a weekly update schedule the week that you're covering for a co-worker's family vacation. Gah. I did manage to post the next chapter of Strong Heart tonight. From now on out, you'll have to either friend the story on LJ or follow the twitter account to find out about new posts.

PS - MeiLin, thanks for setting up a corner of your forum where we rank newbies can mention our stories. I'll stop abusing it now!

Now I'm curious. What do these charms do? How do such things work in this world?

Solid writing skills to base your future growth on. I would definitely read more of your work. Smile

I'm intrigued by the different layers of politeness. But I'm confused by one thing - shouldn't Jo be similarly polite to Nerses as to her master? I was a bit confused by this. Then I decided it was because she pretty much had them by the balls and could start pushing them around a little bit to get what she wants.

Glad y'all are interested Smile Thanks, guys!

If you don't mind, I'll respond to the specifics of your comments over on the LJ later today, so that other readers can see it, too. I know LJ isn't ideal, but I'm trying to keep all the story chatter in one spot.
