So I have to put in a plug

A friend of mine just had her first book published on September first! It is of the urban fantasy genre, the first of a series revolving around a half-fae / half-human detective straddling our world and Faerie. Our heroine is October "Toby" Daye, who has just returned to San Francisco after spending fourteen years as a fish. She has family issues -- her mother is insane; relationship issues -- the man she wants is married to her liege's daughter; and work issues -- she's been cursed to find a murderer or die herself. What's needed is explained as you go along, and the story and perspective are fresh and welcome. I'm sure you'll love it.

I was also one of the proofers for this excellent series, so I'm biased. The book is Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire, published by DAW. Click on Mei's little Amazon link to buy, or support your local bookstore. The next installment, A Local Habitation, will be out in March. Book three, An Artificial Night, will be out in September 2010.

read it! It sounds like something I would read. The last book I read had a succubus who lost her powers because the demon she worked for got summoned. I'm so gonna hunt that down!

so maybe I can drop some hints =). The book sounds awesome, by the way, so if I don't get it for my b-day I'll have to save up and by it myself.

I'm an absolute fanatic for the Dresen series, so this one will be hard put to measure up. That being said, it looks interesting. Bought it, I'll post a review in this thread in a week or so after it's shipped and been eaten. Blum 3

I finished this a while back, my bad. I meat to post here sooner, but school is fighting dirty.

So, first things first: It's good. Get it, read it, you'll probably like it. I did.

Now, the critique:

She needs to tighten up her dialogue, it feels a little forced. Not terrible, but I believe that there's room to improve. Witty banter is a must in this genre, and she's got a lot of competition.

She needs to flesh out her character, make her a little bit more whole. She's done well so far, made her flawed in a lot of the right ways, and made her mostly believable. That being said, it kinda feels like she just went down the "tragic hero checklist", you know? Abusive ex-lover -check, lost family -check, mommy issues -check, low self-esteem/heavy guilt-trips -check. Not trying to sound harsh, but it seems kinda formulaic.

So overall: a good first novel, I'd give this one an 8/10, with much indication that the next couple in the series will be even better. Not the best example of the genre, but better than most. I'll be looking forward to the next installment.
