Corsets, anyone?

I was wondering if anyone on here knows where to get a good but semi-inexpensive corset, preferably online. I have a corset from Fredericks of Hollywood, but it's...so-so. The boning is too light, and the fastenings in the front are not very sturdy, so I can't really lace it as tight as I would like. I've been looking online, but I can't find anything decent that isn't like $300. This forum seemed the most likely place to find an answer, from what I've read from you guys over the last year or two Smile Thanks!

I've got a few from Charlotte Rousse I like, but they're for dress up more than legitimacy. Dunno how well they'd pass at, say, a RenFaire.

Something with good stiff boning (maybe steel?), a front busk with sturdy fastenings (not just hook and eye fastenings), and made of a thick fabric that won't stretch too much. I'd like an underbust corset, but overbust are good too. The one I have is the Hollywood Dream Corset, and it's not bad, but I'd like something different.

www.corsets-uk.com, and they're certainly inexpensive. (You want "heavy lacing corsets" or "exclusive full steel boned," though I think the first category also contains the second.) They have both underbust and overbust.

But honestly, the low prices make me suspicious. I would expect well-made corsets, with sturdy fabric, good boning, and correct sizing, to cost much more.

You could also try Etsy. I've seen a lot of good stuff there.

I have a corset that I love from Damsel in this Dress. All of their stuff is steel boned and made with good quality fabric. And they're a resonable price for the quality.

Here's a link to their Esty shop. http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5094877

1.) they're a million times cheaper (ok, slight exaggeration, but sometimes more than 50% cheaper) when she does sales which is often but not right now

2.) the "skeleton" of her corsets is serious stuff there are two metal rods that run up the front and make things like bending difficult if you have a short torso or if you spend too much time in them. I guess I'd say, they're very comfortable but not great if you're not used to wearing a corset with strong boning.

3.) very unique - that's why I love them (seriously, I have 4 plus several of her skirts and no real reason to have them), but it means that they won't just work for every time that you think "ooh I could wear a corset with this". They make a statement which may or may not be what you want for a first corset.

If you're ok with a fairly basic underbust corset (decently made, relatively comfy, small selection of pretty fabric), I say go with Timeless Trends: http://www.timeless-trends.com/ I own two, they're great for times when you want an awesome sexy corset look but need something that can take a beating. I put one of their corsets through several Mardi Gras parades and it's still in great shape despite being worn in such a brutal fashion.

I'm having a really hard time picturing you in a corset... How does Scrapper feel about this?

Also, Cheez-It In A Corset, I'm assuming you're not actually V, in which case you should register an account Wink

... cis-men in corsets, and while the sight did nothing for me, it also wasn't the strangest or most provocative thing I saw that day. Smile

Wasn't there an episode of CSI that had a guy in a corset?

Correct, Cheez-It In A Corset V is *not* the V to whom you are accustomed. I would have hoped that this would be clear, but then...from you, kk, I can hardly expect anything less Blum 3

I dunno about scrapper, but having met "our" V, I can't envisage him in a corset in any way that would look good. But then, I'm another one in the camp of corsets not looking good without the proper hips & boobs to go with 'em.

in the "met V" camp, I have to respectfully disagree. I think it would all depend on the corset. Blum 3

I really have to agree with Capriox here. I'm not sure I want to even *try* to imagine whatever Raigne's thinking of :X

If Tim Curry and Barry Bostwick can pull it off...

ETA: Might I add that Richard's expression in that icon has never been more applicable to a post here... Blum 3

Not that I've ever met V, but there's something striking about a dude in a corset Blum 3 if it fits properly and is a male corset . . .

See, Tim Curry in a corset isn't sexy to me. In fact, most of the Rocky Horror Picture show isn't sexy to me, as in getting me turned on. It's a lot of other things, like hilariously entertaining, but not even remotely close to having a porntastic effect on me. I like the boys without curves, and to me corsets are all about emphasizing the curves, so....

As I said to V, Tim Curry was also helped by having a fantastic set of legs. Blum 3

Tim Curry's corset wasn't cinched very tight; he wore it more like a vest.

I have two made by a brand called Empire. I know they carry them at Fascinations stores, but a year-round costume shop would also be a good bet. The boning is enough to comfortably contain and support D-cups, so it's nothing to sneeze at. The best part? Both of mine were maybe $60-$75 apiece. They've held up well and are quite sturdy in the fastenings and laces. I recommend them if you're on a budget for sure.

EDIT: I found their site, and while they don't sell directly, meaning you'll have to find a retailer in your area, you can see what they look like: http://www.empireintimates.net/Bridal%20Corsets%20Main%20Page.htm

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! I'm going to have a hard time deciding what to get. Have either of you with corsets from Damsel in this Dress had any complaints about the lacings being up the front instead of the back? It looks really cool, but I'm worried that my tummy would stick out of the lacings or something Smile

Haven't had that problem (and I'm a fairly large woman), but it pays to follow her directions for measuring and lacing carefully. Here's a blog post with measuring directions: http://damseldress.blogspot.com/2009/07/how-do-you-measure-up.html

I've heard good things on the corset forums about Timeless Trends, Electra Designs, and Meschantes. They can have lower pricing with a reasonable product for the price. Watch the communication from Meschantes, though, as they've had some issues there.

dang, my friend bought a corset at comic con that seems to be exactly what you're looking for, but I can't remember the freaking website or the name of the company.
I'll try to see if I can find out what the website is. somehow.
edit: I think this is the one http://www.scarlettscorset.com/fancy_dress_main.html

the corsets can be kinda expensive, but some of them are not so bad.
