Webcomics are stories too!

Han-pan's picture

What are yer favorite web comics everyone? I'm totally hooked to 'em, some of them have the BEST stories, or artwork, or whatever! Laughing out loud Share share!

  • http://www.somethingpositive.net is the story of Davan and his friends and their experiences in the theatre and out of it. Lots of sarcasm and droll humor ^^
  • http://www.questionablecontent.net is about Marten and his many many lady friends, of whom he just can't seem to get with xD Laugh out loud hilarious with lots of obscure band references that you don't need to get in order to understand Eye-wink
  • http://www.xkcd.com Stick figure art many times involving science and math, but you don't need either to appreciate the humor <3
  • http://www.rivalangels.com Wrestling rookies trying to get into the group known as the Rival Angels! Very sexy, action packed, and over all enjoyable even if you don't like wrestling ^^
  • http://www.pholph.com This one is called Jack, and is about death and what happens after death, the creation of heaven, hell and purgatory. Perhaps the deepest comic I read and is absolutely captivating Smiling

http://www.somethingpositive.net

I left descriptions out of those as you covered them already.

http://www.dieselsweeties.com pixelated robot love, it usually has a lot of topical humor and a loosely contiguous story line so even if you miss a few you're not totally lost.

http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php its about gamers and video games in general, absolutely hilarious.

http://www.lfgcomic.com is based one World of Warcraft, I think its based around the lore but I'm not positive. Richard, the warlock, is the funniest thing I've ever seen.

http://redstring.strawberrycomics.com is a girly, romance, manga-like comic revolving around several students and their relationships. The red string is meant to symbolize the red string of destiny. The new chapter artwork is always fabulous.

http://www.pennyandaggie.com is about high school girls that basically hate each other and are trying to sabotage one another's every move.

Han-pan's picture

Penny and Aggie sounds

Penny and Aggie sounds hilarious xD I might have to start reading that one :3
As for CAD, I tried to read it when I was in high school. I even got caught up. I just found it incredibly stupid and uninteresting after a while, but to each their definite own Eye-wink

webcomics, yay!

Of the above, I read questionable content, something positive, ctrlaltdel, red string and xkcd.

I also read...
www.dominic-deegan.com Seer with many many premonitions and all his ensuing adventures, with sidekick talking cat and very intellegent but lacking in self-esteem girlfriend.

www.applegeeks.com

www.bymoonalone.com This one is new, so I'm not entirely sure what exactly it's about. I know it's two kids making up a story, but...anyway, it's good art.

www.doomnstuff.com White noise, post-apocalyptic stuff. Aliens wrecked the planet, scientists are working on genetically mutated humans, who are outcasts of society and mostly shot on sight. Fun, right?

www.exiern.com Wizard transformed the warrior into a chick, chick/warrior captured wizard anyway and is transporting him to a very far away city. Many adventures ensue.

www.flipside.com Maytag is a confident woman who can do anything! But only when she has her costume on. Her girlfriend is an expert swordswoman, who has been sent on a training mission.

www.insertcredits.com tabletop gaming geeks are go! New comic.

www.marrymemovie.com singing star randomly marries a guy (named Guy) in the audience. Now they're waiting to see if they're actually legally married...and more importantly, could they live with each other if they are?

www.outtherecomic.com Follows sherry and miriam, who run a bar. John makes some excellent chili. Smiling

www.punchanpie.net Angela is a short blond chick who loves toys. This is a spin-off from www.queenofwands.net, which was a slice of life comic following Kestrel.

www.PvPonline.com Follows the office life of the creators of the pvp magazine. Not much gaming content, but still excellent and frequently hilarious.

www.seraph-inn.com Inverloch is a completed tale. Acheron is a da'kor who falls in love with an elf. Unfortunately the lady is in love with her childhood mate, who dissappeared years ago. Acheron sets out to find him.
The phoenix requiem: Anya has a new, mysterious patient. With bullet-holes. Where did he come from? Why was he shot? What does he know? And why do people keep dying of what appears to be magic, when magic no longer exists?

www.straysonline.com Meela has just gotten her stick shelter built, and what happens but a man comes along and falls on it. The bugger.

www.userfriendly.com computer geek comic! This is how I found out about zork. And quake.

www.vgcats.com 'nother gaming comic. 1 strip gags.

www.geektragedy.com Casey dies but...doesn't go to heaven. He's stopped at the gate by an automated angel, who tells him to get into heaven he must help his friend gain a life, as said friend is no longer in the books because he's done nothing notable in a very long time.

Han-pan's picture

WOW xD How do you have the

WOW xD How do you have the time to read all those?! And keep up?! I'd go nuts! =P

I'm familiar with VGCats and QOW, but none of those others =P I'm interested in Geek Tragedy though, definitely ^^ Thanks!!

XD well

only a few of them update every weekday, and even if they all updated every day, it would only take me about an half hour in the mornings to read them all. I usually read them when I first get up, while the kidlets are eating breakfast.

Now if only I could show the same devotion to my work-out plan.

Comix are DEFINITELY stories!

I am a huge, huge comix geek and have been since around age 3. My oldest child is now afflicted as well, and we both read online comix. My faves/regular reads are all on the Good Stuff page; going quickly down the list (go to the page for links):

--Phoenix Requiem, intriguing and beautifully drawn, and reminiscent of the History in terms of period inspirations;

--Red String, very sweet--A (from here) got me into it;

--Friendly Hostility, laugh-out-loud magical realist multi-generational story with dozens of characters;

--Juathuur, amazing artwork and great story about a girl who can walk between worlds and the gods she literally serves--OK, I confess I read it because I'm in love with Merlu;

--Alien Loves Predator, action-figure comic about NYC roommates Abe (Alien) and Preston (Predator), and freaking hilarious--Preston has bifocals;

--Lackadaisy, one of the most beautifully drawn and detailed comics on the web, if not the most, which means it doesn't update but once in a blue moon.

There are more, but those are my faves.

ETA: I forgot Crowfeathers! Which I love. Fan service. She has it.

Further ETA: The terrific SPQR Blues! Which is written/drawn by a really nice gal. And also Khaos Komix, which is funny, sad and sweet by turns.

Oh man

I am such a webcomic addict it's not even funny. Stop bringing more up for me to get hooked on!! *incurs severe drop in GPA* *flails ineffectively*

but yeah, Questionable Content, XKCD, Bunny, Penny and Aggie, Scary Go Round, Dreamland Chronicles, Phoenix Requiem, Girl Genius, Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and the Perry Bible Fellowship (discontinued! *cries*) are my favorites. I follow a bunch more because they are occasionally interesting.

My favs

lfgcomic, Questionable Content, xkcd, and punchanpie already got covered? Dang. There goes half my list.

http://www.jaynaylor.com/betterdays/archives/2003/04/post-2.html
Better Days. Yes, it's furry. So's Mickey Mouse. No, there's no explicit sex...but he sells those if you want >.> Some of the panels are pretty thought provoking, and most of the rest are darn funny. The author develops as a storyteller over time, characterizes the mom better starting around page 25. 34 is a riot.

http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0001.html
Order Of The Stick. Nice yarn drawing heavily on D&D with consistent art.

http://goblinscomic.com/d/20050626.html
Another D&D tale, but a unique perspective and very endearing. The art improves and goes to full color shortly. Only problem is that the detailed art and coloring makes for slow updates when you catch up >.<

http://earthsongsaga.com/comic-redux/redux1.html
Earthsong is a nice online graphic novel...like Goblins, the updates are very high-quality and well-written, but rare treats when they arrive. Sci-fi/Fantasy.

But I saw LICD advertising on AE's top banner the other day and thought "Wow! Yeah. Perfect venue for them."

Kitabare's picture

Some of them are already covered.

*opens a new browser and opens the comix bookmark*

Already mentioned *closing tabs*...
QC, S*P, xkcd, OotS, Earthsong, Inverloch, Exiern, ctrl-alt-del, Jack, LFG, By Moon Alone, Marry Me, VG Cats, Lackadaisy.

Not mentioned. Eesh, there are a lot. Luckily most of them update only occasionally...

http://www.twolumps.net - the antics of two cats. High-larious.

http://nodwick.humor.gamespy.com/gamespyarchive/index.php - Nodwick is a henchman to an oddball adventuring party.

http://headtripcomics.comicgenesis.com - ranges between lots of subjects. Similar drawing style to QoW. Doesn't update very often Sad

http://www.forthewicked.net/ - takes fairytales, twists them, and puts them into one story. Doesn't update very often Sad

http://www.wayfarersmoon.com/ - beautifully drawn fantasy

http://www.terinu.com/ - beautifully drawn sci-fi

http://www.misfile.com/ - a misfit angel is in charge of the filing in heaven. One day he gets high and accidentally puts two peoples files in the wrong place. Now he has to fix it before he gets caught. The catch is, he's been thrown out of heaven for the moment.

http://www.shadowgirlscomic.com/ - Cthulu-esk style comic.

http://www.wtfcomics.com/ - based on the EverQuest games.

http://www.thewotch.com/ - a witchy girl tries to get through a normal life. Has a bad habit of turning her male friends into females.

http://yume.rosalarian.com/ - in the artists own words "a lesbian webcomic"

http://bardsworth.com/ - teenager goes through a door in his closet and ends up enrolled in a school for wizards.

http://comics.cyberneticevilstudios.com/ - interesting futuristic comic done in a flash format.

http://www.insideoutcomic.com/ - remember the Farside comics? Well, these are close.

http://www.actiontrip.com/comics/at_comic282.phtml - similar to VG cats and ctrl-alt-del in that there are a lot of game references.

http://www.godspack.com/ - set in a celtic style past. Wolves are given powers by the gods. Interesting so far.

http://www.megatokyo.com I

http://www.megatokyo.com I can't believe this one hasn't been listed yet, I think it is awesome. Piro and Largo are stick in Japan following a botched try at getting into E3 and their adventures since.
http://www.penny-arcade.com another one that I love. Comics on anything ranging from gaming to cons to gaming news, anything is fodder for Gabe and Tycho.
http://www.applegeeks.com another awesome comic. Hawk, Jason, Alice, Gina and Eve's adventures.

Some already listed that I read are Questionable Content, OOtS, LFG, I used to read WTF but stopped after I moved and couldn't find it again, oh well.

WTF

They've been updating sporadically. You have a link now. If you have any time it's a pretty quick catch up. Not like the one I forgot to mention because I'm still catching up on it. WTF currently has 324(?) comics. Drowtales has 12 chapters with each chapter averaging around 50 pages. I'm just starting chapter 3. And I'm doing this because I fell out of reading for over a year before I picked it up somewhere again, and couldn't remember where I had left off >.<

Kaisar Ryu's picture

I feel shame (not realy)

The main thing I find sad about this thread is that there are no comics I haven't already looked at that arent blocked on my work computer, and that about the only one I could add to the list is Mystic Revolution http://www.mysticrev.com/index.php . (well sluggy, but that was where my web addiction started, and might be a bit much to catch up on for anyone that isn't already a sluggite.)

Sharkinabox's picture

These have gone unmentioned so far...

But I like them rather a lot

http://www.drmcninja.com/ - Everything you could possibly want in a webcomic. Ninjas, pirates, banditos, dinosaurs, zombies, ghosts, Ronald McDonald, Paul Bunyan, robots. Excess piled on excess, with lots of funny bits and explosions. Also, occasional ponderings on the contradiction inherent to being a ninja and a doctor (and Irish?).

http://www.irregularwebcomic.net/ - One of the most regularly updated webcomics ever. If you like legos, nerdery (in many flavors), and very long webcomics, this is a good place to go.

http://www.gunnerkrigg.com/index2.php - Gunnerkrigg Court is a great fantasy story. I had to stop just short of capitalizing those last three words. I think that's about all I have to say. It's worth at least trying out.

http://www.smbc-comics.com/ - "This bear tastes alive?" Absurd humor abounds in the single-panel Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal. Some of the jokes get reused, and some of the jokes are more horrifying than funny, but I think the moments of hilarity are worth it.

http://www.asofterworld.com/ - These photocomics always manage to disturb me, and they always manage to make me laugh. No stories here, except the ones you imagine. Still, one of my very very favorites.

Trystia's picture

Okay, apparently we all have

Okay, apparently we all have rather similar tastes, since every webcomic I regularly read has been listed already. I could name a few that haven't been mentioned yet, but only by listing webcomics I'm at least two months behind on.

Gudy's picture

I'll be the party pooper, then

And list a comic I am current on that hasn't been listed yet.
Too Much Information The style takes some getting used to, but his humour just plain works for me.

Katie's picture

found a new one!

QC readers probably know about it already, but

www.wastedtalent.ca is omg AWESOME. It's just a slice of life comic, but it made me laugh out loud more times than I can count, to the point where hubby was getting annoyed! Very very cute artwork and one very adorable couple. Smiling

Daymon's picture

Wow

Well since a lot of the ones I read have been listed (LFG, QC, VG Cats, Dominic Deegan [which is very funny], Girl Genius, Yu Me Dream, Mistic Rev, Mega Tokyo) I will look and see what I can add.

http://www.egscomics.com/ or El Goonish Shive is a comic about Tedd and the crazyness that happens in his life. It can be silly and funny.

http://www.collectedcurios.com/sequentialart.html Sequentialart has some of the funniest stuff I have read, there has been times I almost shot my drink at the monitor from laughting to hard.

http://www.sincomics.com/ Sins is about the personifications of the primary sins, they change every now and then and they have some funny storylines.

http://www.bigheadpress.com/lamuse I about Susan LaMuse who is an alien born and living on earth, and admits to the people of earth that she is not from here and is trying to change the world.

http://www.aliendice.com/ Is a story about Chel and Lexx, Lexx is from off of earth and is trying to catch Alien Dice. It's a good story I recommend it.

http://www.drunkduck.com/Bad_Guy_High/index.php?p=163369 Now this one is full of gags and referances to other shows/comics out in main stream. It is about Evan and his attenpt about being the best supervillian the world has seen. It is highly recommended for the humor.

http://www.drunkduck.com/I_Was_Kidnapped_By_Lesbian_Pirates_From_Outer_S... Is by the creator of Yu+Me Dream and is full of comedy.

I think I will stop there otherwise I will overload everyone with to much to read.

Bunny: http://www.frozenreality.co.uk/comic/bunny/
- ...just weird.
Ctrl-Alt-Del: http://www.cad-comic.com/comic.php
- Video game comic, but with really funny characters. The story line has recently taken a turn for the more serious, though.
*Questionable Content: http://questionablecontent.net/
- My first webcomic, and still one of the funniest ones I've found. The story of Martin, a nice guy that likes Indie music, and all of the women he meets.
General Protection Fault: http://www.gpf-comics.com/
- Another geek comic (as you may have gathered from the name) with a pretty good story line.
*Out There: http://outtherecomic.com/
- One of my more recent finds, the characters are interesting, and it's always, always funny.
*Punch an' Pie: http://www.punchanpie.net/cgi-bin/autokeenlite.cgi
- Awesome artwork (drawn by the guy who does Striptease), and a really funny story (written by the girl who used to do Queen of Wands).
Queen of Wands: http://www.queenofwands.net/ - Doesn't update anymore, but the archives of this story comic are worth a read.

- This one is new to me, but it's really grown on me.
Garfield Minus Garfield: http://garfieldminusgarfield.tumblr.com/
- Old Garfield comics with no one in them but Jon Arbuckle. Funny sometimes, but a little depressing if you read them all at once.
Pictures of Sad Children: http://picturesforsadchildren.com/
- Cute, and weird. This one is about a guy that dies, and his ghost has some issues readjusting to life in a really cute way.
*Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal: http://www.smbc-comics.com/ - This one had me rolling on the ground laughing as soon as I started reading it. When nothing else can make me laugh, I go here. They're just these one panel comics that are utterly hilarious.
PVP: http://www.pvponline.com/ - Another video game/nerd comic.

kawaiikune's picture

Oh! And speaking of webcomics...

So, a long time ago, I read this one webcomic. It was one of my favorites, but then my laptop got stolen and it wasn't bookmarked anywhere else, and now I can't remember what it was called. It was about these two guys that lived together (and were sort of involved). One was just referred to as Boss, and he was tall and blond and wanted to rule the world. The other had a name that started with an F that I can no longer remember, and he was darker and had these thick eyebrows and a hook nose. There was a demon that they found in a closet or behind the refrigerator or something that they just called Demon. They met this girl named Anne on their college campus, who was a lot younger than them. They nicknamed her Boots, and she hung out with them a lot (and maybe even lived with them).

The one strip that I remember most clearly took place when the two guys were out of town, and Boots had a key to their apartment, and went over while they were gone. She started dancing around in her underpants singing Bob Segar's "Old Time Rock n' Roll", using a broom handle for a microphone until, in the final frame, the Demon walked in on her. It was a great comic and I loved it, but I can't find it. Do any of you know what that could be (or how I could find out)? I would really like to get back into reading it. Thanks!

MeiLin's picture

YES!

FRIENDLY HOSTILITY!! My favoritest! "Boss" is Fox's nickname for his boyfriend Collin. We haven't seen much of Demon lately, and Bootsy/Anne went away to college. They didn't meet Anne in college, she was the high school-age sister of a guy Collin played poker with; he won her as a slave! In fact, I don't think Fox and Collin went to college, though I could be wrong. It is a HILARIOUS strip that you have to start from the beginning, before Fox and Collin are even born. It just gets funnier and funnier over time. The author is certifiable and I love her.

Don't for get http://boymeetsboy.keenspot.com/. It's a completed comic by the same artist in the same canon. It focuses on a different cast, but Collin & Fox show up part way through amidst the hilarity. FH basically picks up where their storyline left off in BmB. Definitely worth a read.

Other webcomics I read...
Mentioned already: GIRL GENIUS (tied with the History for favorite online fiction) & Buck Godot, xkcd, penny & aggie, two lumps, sluggy freelance (grandfather of webcomics, but not as good as it used to be), dominic deegan (awesome!), questionable content, queen of wands, something positive, marry me, crowfeathers, bardsworth, el goonish shive, bunny, candi

Not yet mentioned (or I missed it if it was)...
Narbonic (SO VERY GOOD, hilarious female mad scientist, her evil intern, and the recent computer science grad they hire for tech support. completed.) - http://www.webcomicsnation.com/shaenongarrity/narbonic/series.php?view=a...

Wapsi Square - http://www.wapsisquare.com/
Digger (unfortunately, only the first couple chapters and the most recent page are free, but it's so very worth it. The main character is a very practical, sarcastic wombat. So good!) - http://www.graphicsmash.com/comics/digger.php

I cannot tell you how much I love you for knowing that

I have been looking for that comic strip for upwards of a year, and no one else has known what I was talking about. Clearly I simply did not ask the right person. Thank you!

thank you for being a "hostile!"

I so totally adore FH and I love it when other people are into it. Smiling

Could be I've just missed them...

but afaics these were not yet mentioned:

- The Abominable Charles Christopher (http://horhaus.com/abominable/): Beautifully drawn, funny and sad. Updates only once a week. Read it, read it read it!!
- Anders loves Maria (http://anderslovesmaria.reneengstrom.com/): Kind of a love story. Very interesting character development, imo.
- Kate Beaton (http://katebeaton.com/Site/Welcome.html): Random, mostly about history. Hilarious, imo.
- Xylia (http://www.xyliatales.com/): Fantasy love story. Beautiful art but slow story due to slow updates. Nevertheless worth a read.

Apart from these I regularly read and love OOTS, Gunnerkrigg Court, QC, SGR, xkcd, PA, Goblins and all that other good stuff.

Good List!

I was happy to see that I have read or am still reading a lot of these. ^_^ S*P, QC, EGS, Red String, Misfile, the random pretty one's that hardly ever update... The other sex comic by the Penny and Aggie author, Menage a 3 is sexy and funny. My husband finds it hilarious.

But I was even more excited to see that a have a few to add (unless I missed them). These are the good one's out of those.

Boy on a Stick and Slither (http://www.boasas.com/index.php)
-A little comic with simple art, but a fantastic sense of weird humor. It's sort of philosophical in my opinion and I <3 their t-shirts. It doesn't really have ongoing plot lines but it does actually update!

Blip (http://blipcomic.com/index.php?strip_id=1&PHPSESSID=e0d13aa74166fdd362bf...)
-One of my favs, even though it's a bit short. I'm really enjoying the current off-beat romance. It updates and it has beautiful watercolors.

Alien Dice (http://aliendice.com/)
-I'm not sure how _good_ this comic acctually is, but when read in long chunks it's a decent story. And I mean story. You get more out of the written script posted below then is captured in the drawings. It's really frustrating once you catch up, but if anyone out there would enjoy it or wants to just sit and read something new for hours on end, this is the comic for you. it's been around for years!

Zombie Hunters (http://www.thezombiehunters.com/index.php)
-I don't like horror unless it's really good. This is really good. The art is awesome, but it's still got gore and creepiness, and lots of zombies.

Inhuman (http://hekshano.com/index.php)
-And finally, Inhuman. It messes with your mind in a good way. Insanity and other serious issues. I like it.

Almost every comic I read has

Almost every comic I read has already been covered...didn't see this one, though:

Crimson Dark www.davidcsimon.com
Digitally drawn with lots of pretty explosions and very intriguing characters--follows the mismatched crew of a privateer which can't seem to keep out of trouble.

Best thing about webcomics for me

is that anytime I'm in the mood, I can browse around, often from someone's link list and pretty quickly find something to lose an hour. Actually, that may also be the worst thing about webcomics...

www.schlockmercenary.com - updates daily. Very funny, sometimes biting space opera, starring a mad scientist, his clone, an omnipotent omniscient AI named Petey and the lasgun toting carbosilicate amorph of the title. Used to have snake-like lawyers, until Schlock got permission to kill them all...
