An odd thought
Submitted by TheBoy on Sun, 07/19/2009 - 6:28pm
Would it be worth our considering having some folks (much as with the wiki) going through the old archives (story comments and forum discussions) and adding tags to them somehow such that less intensive searching is required if we're trying to dig up specific conversations?

Something like that would require either a lot of work from Mei or Mei giving access to select individuals to add such tags...

My thought had been the second, rather than the first. It could be a long-term project of sorts--plus, if it were done chronologically, it might bring old conversations to light for the new folks without creating redundant threads.

So put this in Captain Dummy terms. You want free tagging? I can do that.

I don't know "terms."
I'm not stoned, I'm studying too much (I hope).
I just think it'd be useful if there WERE tags, esp. on old discussions (not many, necessarily)...and I'm not 100% sure that universal tagging ability is what we want either--I was making a general, rather than specific, suggestion. I'm curious what you and others think of the notion (perhaps when you're sober).

I think they might be useful. I do not know what group of people should be able to set them.

The issue I see with this is if there is self tagging, like the catagories in the recipies. There are how many different catagories and each one only has one or two different recipies.

I don't disagree. I think a smaller group of folks might be better suited to the task.

Yeah...
We have a bunch and not every recipe has every existing tag that would apply to it listed. I could see it getting out of hand pretty quickly. Maybe just brainstorm a few broad categories so if someone's looking for something interesting they may be able to find it there, but more narrow in scope than the forum categories are. And I'd say if possible restrict it based on badge, but again, I don't know where you'd start. Started the ability to see social network names at the first badge level. I don't think we need to worry too much about the kind of troll who'd wrack up 50 points just to mistag things.

I didn't put too much thought
I didn't put too much thought into the details of the function--I just thought it might be nice to be able to go to the tags page for "religion" or "capital punishment" or "KK and FN go epic."

I plan.
I am the person who looks at a broad suggestion and then starts working out all the minute details. Good for things small in scope, pain in the ass for large projects, because I have a short attention span. I am about at the edge of it for my renaissance garb, for example, and I still have one piece of it left to go. Mind you I didn't start it until Wednesday, and I didn't work on it at all today or Saturday. Four pieces got done in three days and it will take me at least two for the last one, because I'm losing steam.

People who plan
Are very needful beings, in this case I suggest you make the plans & if Mei agrees with them then we find others to implement them.
TB is right Tags would be helpful, but I agree that they would have to be carefully menued. Maybe a *few* categories could have a very few subcategories?? That could get out of hand very easily though so would need a lot of thought.
I would be more than willing to lend a hand with this project if we wait till next month to start it. The rest of this month is kinda booked up for me. Plus it would give me a chance to read all the conversations that I ignored while getting caught up with the story when I first found it. :biglol:

Needful...
Yeah, I'm a bit of a control freak. But I also know when I am making a commitment I won't be able to follow through with, and micromanaging the tagging system for here is one of those things. I was throwing stuff out there for other people, because I know other people may not think of it.

Re: Needful
Ok I can roll with & respect that. Micro managing was not what I had in mind anyway.
Ok sign me up for the committee. Hopefully it convenes only while I'm still home. Won't have much computer access while I'm gone.

Tags!
For some reason this thread did not show up in the tracker for me until today, but I am 100% behind this idea.
Whenever I am going through the archives I want to apply tags to the older chapters. I remember some of the newer ones adding tags once we learned character's surnames, or once we knew a character was regular enough to warrant a tag. I would love to go back and add those if we could have permission to do so.
I am usually pretty frugal about tagging, but I do like consistency in as far as it allows me to trust the tags to yield thorough results.

What I'm thinking of doing
...is enabling tagging for Embodiment level. Just about everyone at that level is a trusted user. Or I could create a new category. I hope that wouldn't mess with da badges...

Embodiment
was my first inclination when I thought about who to limit tags to, but it occurred to me that we've got a lot of trusted users at all levels. Of course, they could just bug an embodiment to add a tag they think is worth adding in that case, and get an extra point for their trouble
