The date we've settled on is the 16th.

Copy Pasta from the OP of the forum thread about this below the jump:

So Raigne and I mentioned the Sterling Renaissance Festival because we're both from NYS, and V was poking me to look for a meet-up site near me since I can't make WCW and it occurred to me that the local Ren fest would be an EXCELLENT place for a meet-up! It runs almost every weekend in July and August, so we have our choice of dates, and it's not terribly far from Syracuse, NY, which is connected by Rt. 90 and Rt. 81 to the rest of the northeast.

Information...
Location/Directions (plenty of parking here!):
http://www.sterlingfestival.com/directions/tabid/62/Default.aspx
Dates (each weekend is themed):
http://www.sterlingfestival.com/SpecialEvents/tabid/55/Default.aspx
Tickets (not too bad):
http://www.sterlingfestival.com/buytickets/tabid/53/Default.aspx

So... anyone interested? We could pretend we were at a historical Tremontine re-enactment (circa Warin the Wise's reign!) ;-D

It occurs to me that it might be worth noting... bring either some cash or some lunch with you. There's not really much in the immediate area in the way of stuff outside the place, and I don't recall if there's an ATM available anywhere.

And in addition to the above linkspam, if you require travel accomodations, the festival website reports these as the likely suspects:

Huh.

Maybe I am just impatient, but this has been up for a full 12 hours (lol) now, and Capriox and I are the only people signed up. I coulda swore we had like, 4 or 5 people who were going. Oups

MIA

There may be another comming. She's currently moving and hasn't been here for a while. Maybe when she gets more settled in...

scrapper's picture

I hope to make it

I originally said I would like to come, I am just behind, haven't been on here for a few days. I would still like to try and come, but I just realized I am going to see Jeff Dunham here in CT that Friday night, so I'll have to work it out for sure and check out drive time and see if I can arrange the schedule to make it work. Still interested though!

scrapper's picture
Postulant

Ooh!

That just got me a new badge, woohoo!!

V's picture
Embodiment

Wait, srsly?

Grr double-booking. If we still see Jeff (8pm start) t'll probably be too late to drive Friday evening (unless you count late-late-LATE arrival) but we might be able to get an early start Saturday.

Grats on the badge, tho

scrapper's picture
Postulant

You, early start?

Wahaha! But, yeah we could figure something out, looks like about a 5 hour drive. That way it won't be just Raigne and Capriox! I didn't realize they were both the same weekend until now, oops.

But it's all good, new badge, new badge, yeah! Thanks for the congrats!

Meet-up date

It's a day trip for me (like an hour drive), so I'm not sure if I'll be there for both days of the weekend. Any preferences as to Sat. 8/15 versus Sun 8/16?

From the sound of it, Saturday afternoon/evening might work best for V and Scrapper, yes?

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

May end up missing them.

A friend of mine IRL and I are going, and we usually leave early in the morning (like, we're with the crowd waiting for the doors to open). Though, with more people there I suppose there will be enough to hold our interest until later in the day. Sticking out tongue

We're also meeting up with a friend of hers, who camps there during the summer and goes in garb Laughing out loud

I don't know if you can see it, but I signed up with my phone number. We're going to have to be able to get in touch with each other to figure out where the hell everyone is if we're not all getting there in the morning. Sam (the friend) and I have an uncanny ability to get lost in there even when we're staring the the blasted map.

ETA: Day trip for us too, but I wasn't sure which day had been settled on, and I will update once we've got it nailed down.

Capriox's picture
Embodiment

I'll PM my cell phone to

I'll PM my cell phone to whoever signs-up once we hit July.

I'm flexible, so my plan is to show up when all the out-of-towners say they'll be there.

V's picture
Embodiment

Yes

Saturday afternoon/evening or Sunday. If we do Dunham we definitely won't leave town that evening, and it's a 5-7 hr drive. I expect that we'd probably rent a hotel room or a B&B or something. We could probably fit another person or two to help control costs.

Capriox's picture
Embodiment

Sun AM?

Well if you two are looking at Sat PM or Sun, and Raigne prefers an AM, then shall we say Sunday morning? Say, Sunday 10am (gates open) - 2pm when we'll all be there, with lunch en masse. Hanging out the night before or later in the afternoon dependent on travel schedules.

scrapper's picture
Postulant

Sounds good to me

Probably the best bet for us, if we are just leaving Saturday morning, the earliest we could have feasibly made it was lunchtime on Saturday. So Sunday would be great, then we can spend the whole day there and drive home in the afternoon or evening. Hanging out the night before would definitely be an option as well, since obviously we will need to stay somewhere and that would give us something to do. That's my two cents anyway. I briefly talked to V about it yesterday and I don't see why he wouldn't be fine with that as well. I am sure he will make it known either way Smiling

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

Updating to reflect settled on time.

And if you guys are meeting up the night before, it now makes me want to get a room somewhere out there too. xD Like I said, the friend of my friend camps there, so maybe there's a way we could bunk with her the night before. If I actually have garb by them (unlikely, but I can hope) it'd also save me a car ride in it. We shall see!

V's picture
Embodiment

He has made it known

And he is fine with it.

Basically, I'ma consider the whole weekend a vacation and meetup and wouldn't mind hanging out with forumites at any point during my travel or stay. It's kinda why I'm going, ya know?

applejax's picture
Supplicant

If you rent a room

I would be eternally grateful if I could hop in on that. Since I'm under 21, finding somewhere to stay that lets me check in is really difficult. I may also be with my roommate, but she's tiny and we'd share a bed.

scrapper's picture
Postulant

That could work

We could probably share, like V said, it would cut down on costs and it would be fun to hang out anyway. Plus we've met you before, so it's not like you would be a complete stranger sharing! (Although V will be high on himself if he's sharing a room with three gals! I'm never going to hear the end of that! Ha!)

Anyway we'll have to check out what's available and go from there. We still have a little bit of time to figure it out, although guess we shouldn't wait too long, in case places are filling up.

V's picture
Embodiment

Oh hush

Who pimped the "come hang out with me in a cabin for the weekend" trip as a chance to hang out in the hot tub with the whole women's hockey team?

P.S. Those with a particular attraction for well-toned feminine legs or asses should immediately get themselves to the nearest rink. Skating is hard work.

applejax's picture
Supplicant

I'd like to come

but it's a pretty lengthy drive so it wouldn't be just a day trip for me. Does anyone have any suggestions on accommodations? It'll either be just me or me and my roommate, so if anyone nearby is up to having two girls on their couches I'd be really appreciative.

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

I don't have anywhere you could stay...

unfortunately, or I'd offer. It's still almost a 2 hour drive for me though. If no one else offers, and you don't mind paying for a night somewhere, the festival website has a list of places in the area:

I could be there by cam if possible

and definitely in spirit.

now i'm imagining someone carrying a webcam around the fair and a little monitor with me on it...

Raigne's picture

If I can

I will have a netbook by then, and if I can convince my step-dad to turn on the internet stuff on my phone so I can hack it and point the gateway to google, I'll have mobile internet as well. At that point I'll have a low res cam working for you.

Worst case scenario is that you get video, but not in real time, since my digital camera's capable of recording video.

Since the netbook I'm getting is rated for several hours with the wifi on, we could even do a continuous stream xD

ETA: After some actual googling to see if it can be done with my phone it appears not. Anyone else got unlimited data usage on a bluetooth enabled cellphone?

MeiLin's picture
Most High

oh, I was teasing

Smiling But it would be nice to set up a time so I could see you guys! If not, then pix.

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

You shall have video!

Like I said, maybe not in real time, but at the very least we can get a group hello for you Smiling

And if someone does have an unlimited data plan, I am betting shortly before or after lunch would be an ideal time to do a real time one if it's possible.

Upside of the non-live version is that the video quality would be way superior to my web cam xD

Friends of mine and I were

Friends of mine and I were just talking about possibly going sometime in August though we haven't set a date yet. It's a couple hours drive for me (from Rochester), but I might be there.

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

Ooo!

I'm a Rochesterian! Are you a local or a visiting student?

ETA: how I managed to miss the mention earlier is beyond me. I usually jump on the discovery when it happens.

scrapper's picture
Postulant

I was a temporary resident

I didn't realize you were in Rochester! I stomped around there a few years back, when I went to college at RIT. I must say I do miss the area sometimes. I had a lot of fun there. What part do you live in? Downtown area or one of the suburbs?

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

Grah!!

Neither. I live on the west side of the city in what is referred to as the 19th ward. I don't know if temporary citizens have the occasion to learn about the verious neighborhoods within the city limits, but that's over by Genesee Park Blvd. and Thurston Rd. That end of the airport is also in the 19th ward. Downtown doesn't really start until you cross Broad St. coming from that direction. Which, not coincidentally, is bordered by the inner loop.

Also, I realize on the internet the people in the Greater Rochester Area just say they're in Rochester, but I can't tell you how irritating it is for someone who lives in the city to find out that someone who says they live in the city actually lives 15-30 minutes away.

R.I.T isn't even actually in Rochester. It used to be when if first opened, but it moved to the Brighton-Henrietta area years ago to have room to expand. The U of R, on the other hand, is still located in the city.

People wonder why it bothers me so much, and I know part of it is that people from Rochester have always had a very strong cultural identity, and the people outside don't share it. They're from the suburbs, not the Roc. They don't pay taxes to the city, they don't elect the people who run it, they aren't (not the way we are) affected by the decisions those people make, they don't have to deal with plights of our school system or our failing businesses, or the crime that's getting increasingly harder for our mostly young police force to handle. They commute here for work and that's the only tie they have. They get the benefits of living here with none of the cons of actually living here, and they could care less about what they take away.

The temporary citizens like you don't bug me as much. The college students usually end up spending a lot of leisure time in the city. At least, a hell of a lot more than 2/3s of the people who say they live here.

Sorry about getting ranty. Oups

Capriox's picture
Embodiment

Ra-cha-cha

For those of who live in some podunk 30 minutes outside of the city, we pretty much have no choice but to say we're from Rochester =P Otherwise y'all have no idea where I was talking about (okay, YOU would, but you get my meaning).

Even going to college only 2 hours away, I always had to say "just outside Rochester" or else get a blank stare.

You are most welcome to your city-identity and your city-problems. I'm happy being a rural (rapidly going suburban, grr) girlie. ;-D

scrapper's picture
Postulant

No worries Raigne

...about ranting on about people saying they are Rochester and aren't. I know going to RIT, I certainly didn't consider that the city, when it was 20 minutes away. The joke always was that since it was South Henrietta it should be S.H.I.T instead of R.I.T. Smiling

I did spend plenty of time downtown, got lost on that inner loop I don't know how many times. I am pretty sure I know the area you are talking about where you live, but it has been a few years since I have been there, so a little rusty on places. But overall I thought it was a great city.

But I do also agree with Capriox about saying you are close to a city when you aren't really that close. I grew up in middle of nowhere PA, but there was no way anyone would know the town, so I always had to say close to Harrisburg, which was 45 minutes away.

But nice to know you love Rochester and love to defend it! I will have to make a jaunt that way sometime soon and see the old stomping grounds. The important question is, does Abbott's Frozen Custard still exist?! I loved that stuff. Ooh and how about Tahoe's? Not that I was crazy about there, but do remember the garbage plate well!

Capriox's picture
Embodiment

Abbott's is everywhere.

Abbott's is everywhere. Tahoe's is still here (but one site had a name change). Also, lots of other places make "garbage plate" knock-offs too :rolls-eyes:

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

Yes, yes they do.

There are garbage plates, trash plates, everything plates, etc. The worst offender is Bill Gray's who had the audacity to trademark the Great Plate.

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

Omg!

Quote:
The joke always was that since it was South Henrietta it should be S.H.I.T instead of R.I.T.

Being that I don't know many people who go there, I've never heard that one! Good think I wasn't drinking anything when I read it. xD

And of course Abbot's is still here. And Tahoe's. The one in Henrietta is no longer called Tahoe's, however. There was some inheritance dispute, and as a result, the son or nephew or whoever ended up with the Henrietta location was no longer allowed to use the name, but as far as I know the recipes are all still the same. A Nick Tahoe's Garbage Plate is our food, just like Buffalo's got hot wings. It's not going anywhere. Sticking out tongue

Also, it is a great source of shame to me, but I have lived in Rochester almost my whole life (born here, moved away as a small child, moved back as a bigger one) and never eaten at Tahoe's. *hangs head* It's blasphemous. It's my dirty little secret.

scrapper's picture
Postulant

You're not missing much

Really I never thought Tahoe's was that great! Certainly not good enough for ripoffs! But I would say not eating there isn't necessarily a bad thing. Glad to hear there is still Abbot's, them I miss! OOh, and Dinosaur BBQ! That place is great! Mmm, making me hungry again...

Oh and glad you liked the South Henrietta joke, I'm surprised you hadn't hear it before!

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

Well, I have

some friends who are going to be attending, but none currently there, so I haven't really had an opportunity to hear it. xD

And, I preserve my Roc cred by converting buddies who live out of state to Wegmans. I went to visit some friends in VA, and one of them was like, "So what do you want to do when you get here?" I'm like, "I see a Wegmans just opened up right by you. We're totally going grocery shopping." Which he thought was very weird, but there it is. I made him buy white hots (pork hots, to all you out-of-towners) while we were there (Zweigle's of course). He was impressed (with the store; the hots got a shrug, the cretin). A couple other friends down there now do all their shopping there. They have a to drive a half an hour to get to it too.

scrapper's picture
Postulant

Wegmans!

I completely forgot about that place! I haven't been in one since I moved from Rochester, how very sad. Me and my brother reminisce about Wegmans on occasion (he went to school up at Cornell in Ithaca). Anyone who hasn't been there just doesn't understand! But it is more than just a grocery store! Ah, the memories! Thanks for that!

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

No problem.

And it's a running gag that you can tell someone's from Rochester if they go to Wegmans to hang out instead of the mall. Sticking out tongue

Capriox's picture

So. Very. True. "It's [fill

So. Very. True.

"It's [fill in any time of day or night, but especially the midnight to 3am stretch], what do you want to do?"

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

You're fine.

Saying "just outside Rochester" is not equivalent to saying "I live in Rochester." I'll even accept "I'm from Rochester" if you at some point lived in the city and then moved away. But if you tell me you live in Rochester, and then, when I ask you what part you're from say Webster, I may not curse you out, but you can bet I'm rolling my eyes at you behind the screen.

Coming up fast!

Is anyone interested but without a ride? Post your location here and other travelers may be able to offer a lift! Does anyone else need to make hotel arrangements? Scrapper and I will need to figure out something else soon. Applejax--you're already on our list of ppl to talk to.

Hotels...someone posted the fair's list here but I haven't done much research. Local input here would be good. A quick look at a map said Oswego and Fulton were the closest towns. The Oswego EconoLodge is booked solid the 15th/16th. I looked at a RV park that also had some 2 and 4 person cabins for $45/$80 night at http://www.sunsetrvpark.net/ and was able to get right to the "Enter credit card info" step without anything saying they were booked up. Campgrounds often come with fire pits and other good hangout spots for groups of people, and I like smores. Drunk If nobody posts contrary input in the next day or so I'll probably book a 4-person.

Raigne's picture
Embodiment

A lot of people camp,

A lot of people camp, particularly people with season passes. Whatever you do, don't wait to long, or you might have to move outward (possibly to Syracuse) to find accomodations. Sticking out tongue It's the last weekend of the year and it's also the Wine Lover's Bacchanal, so it's bound to be pretty packed. Good thing my penchant for getting there when the gates opened inspired the plans to go that way. You have a chance of not having to walk all the way to the back of the field to find your car. xD

We got excellent parking last year, only about 6 rows back, but it was second last weekend, not last.

I don't think any of the rest of us are local enough to help you decide where to stay. I rarely venture outside Rochester and the surrounding areas, and when I do it's not east toward the middle of the state, it's north, south and west.

V's picture
Embodiment

Booked

I just booked the last 4-person cabin at http://www.sunsetrvpark.net/ so if anyone else wants to hang out with us crazies, that's the place. Staying 8/15 and checking out 8/16.
