A possible Fun Thread

While the break up thread is very interesting, as well as informative & therapeutic Capriox is right a happiness thread is needed to balance things out a bit. Although the good gentle suggest a "best relationship" theme I have something a bit different in mind

What about a weird crush thread.

I'm not talking about unrequited crushes we've had on real people we've actually known. I'm talking about crushes on fictional beings only. Television, movies, comics, cartoons, books, or plays are all equally great places to have found that someone that we wish was real & were all ours. So lets talk about them What do you say?

I'll start off.

When I was really little I had a crush on the character Jedidiah on the TV show Barnaby Jones. (we are talking the early 70's here) I wanted to be all grown up & be his wife. Although these days I can't remember why. :biglol:

When I got to be a pre-teen I started watching reruns of the show Bonanza & fell for Adam the oldest of the three sons. I could never decide between him and Keith Partridge who could sing. No I didn't want David Cassidy I wanted his character Keith.

Even now I wouldn't mind if Mr. Darcy of Jane Austin's Pride & Prejudice were to suddenly become real & be all mine.

Gackt.

That's all I have to say.

That's a lie, I have plenty to say about him. Gackt is a J...something singer. He used to be strictly considered J-rock and visual kei (a genre that uses costumes and weird settings to accentuate their music), but his solo career could definitely be considered J-pop. He has beautiful hair, a lovely voice, and has been involved with Final Fantasy since 7; it has always been rumored that he was the inspiration for Cloud and Squall, and he made actual appearance in Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core as the pre-Sephiroth prototype "Genesis". He starred in a strange Japanese film called "Moon Child", and is working on a movie with Josh Hartnett called "Bunraku" which should be in English. He's also been in a long-running Japanese feudal drama lately as a daimyo, a town lord basically, and the current bad-guy of the show.

Now, Gackt is fictional in the same way Stephen Colbert is. He claims his age is somewhere in the 400s (for his actual age, we can only guess he's between 30-40) and that he's actually some type of vampire--one reason why he starred in Moon Child. I'm sure Gackt doesn't actually believe these things, but it's the image he puts out and it's the only image the public has ever seen.

I like to call Gackt my healthy obsession.

I love Guitar Wolf for the same reason. He did this completely absurd movie called Wild Zero [which has one of the best quotes of all time] about a rock group saving the world from aliens. Later, during an interview, he insisted that the movie was not fictional, but rather a documentary, and that we were all welcome.

My sister had a crush on Luke Skywalker when she was younger, but didn't want to admit it to me. So she told me she had a crush on R2D2 instead. I am not clear on how that was supposed to be an improvement.

Mine was on N'ton from Dragonriders of Pern. Which is odd because you never really see much of his character. But I wanted a dragonrider. The rest of the dragonriders were either taken by other book characters who I liked, or showed up even less than N'ton, or were insanely high maintenance. So I made him a personality in my head and gave myself a dragon (green, not gold- similar high maintenance problem) and entertained myself coming up with stories in my head.

Pern will always hold a dear place in my heart because it's where I started hanging out on the internet and got into roleplaying and writing fiction. It was also at a time when fanfic was just the online version of the fanzines that had been around for decades - they had STANDARDS back in those days. /end nostalgia

The original order of publication is actually pretty good, especially since the first six published books form one more-or-less continuous narrative. The timeline jumps around a bit more later on. See here: http://pern.srellim.org/stories.htm

(to me at the time, anyway) was the crush I had on this girl in high school. She was very straight, and I thought I was very straight, and it turns out I was less straight than she was. I still think about that girl sometimes. She never made very good decisions about the boys she dated, and I heard a couple months ago that she broke up with her latest boyfriend, but I've only seen her once since high school, and as far as I know she's still straight. She still defines, in my head, the epitome of feminine beauty. She was always so nice to everyone and made me feel like I was the most awkward person in the whole world in comparison, but she was incredibly nice to me anyway. Now it seems less weird, I guess, but it's strange to me that, at the time, part of me knew something that it was failing to communicate to the rest of me.

Randy Taylor from Home Improvement was the first, and now that I'm thinking about it, was probably what made me a sucker for an intellectual smart-ass... later on, when Mark became more geek than dork, I started to like him too.

Next is not a fictional character, but this is because the first time I ever saw him was in a movie as himself. Chuck Norris. Go ahead and laugh, I'll wait. The movie is The Sidekick, by the way, and we were watching it because my older step-sister had the hots for Johnathan Brandis. We had bunk beds, she had the top bunk, and she had a Tiger Beat poster of him taped to the ceiling, so she could fall asleep looking at his face.

Also liked Tyr Anasazi from Andromeda. He's sort of a jerk with a heart of gold, if you want to assign the particular trope that appeals to me to him. Around the same time as Tyr, I had my first crush on a woman. And that woman was Seven-of-Nine. Yes I know I am a heathen for watching Voyager, and that I am going to hell for enjoying it. At one point I had pictures of both characters side by side on my desktop. They sort of reminded me of the Worf/Deanna Troi match-up from TNG. (Does this give me more geek cred? Do I need any more at this point, is probably a better question. I probably get geek cred for wanting more than I have though...)

The most recent is Yoshimo from Baldur's Gate 2. He's an intellectual smart-ass as well as a martial artist, and while he's not really a jerk with a heart of gold in the traditional sense, he kind of is.

Yep, can't think of any more.

Amy's picture

really chuck Norris?? I get it, Strong, sexy, able to kick ass, & sensitive. Yep, he may be a flesh & blood guy, but he does seem far to good to be true. A real drool too.

Raigne's picture

He's a hard-core right-winger, and while I am by no means a flaming liberal, he's a bit too far left to appeal to my moderate tastes in real life. So I'd take the Chuck Norris of the action movie world over the real one.

I tended not to crush on fictional characters so much as a kid. You'd think I'd have at least an anime character on here but it's all characters from live action TV.

The first was the pink power ranger from the first season of Power Rangers, Kimberly. I don't even remember much about her other than her actress was cute and she kicked butt. Come to think of it, I was really young then, I'm surprised I even noticed.

The next was not technically a fictional character since she was portraying herself, but I'm going to list her anyway, Elisha Cuthbert, but specifically I started crushing on her when she was a host on Popular Mechanics for Kids. She was intelligent and cute, what's not to like?

And the third is Inara from Firefly. For one thing, Morena Baccarin is so gorgeous I want to groom her, but also because she was a strong woman but still felt human and still had complex emotions. I'm still mad Firefly didn't last longer and she and Mal never hooked up. :mad-oni:

Oh and by the way the yellow tongue smiley has the aliases for the orange one when you click it and vice versa. This one Blum 3 is lowercase and this Blum 3 is uppercase, not the other way around. Also : tongue : is listed for both.

Mei-mei isn't swearing; it's Chinese for "little sister," and is sometimes used as a term of endearment for both Kaylee and River on "Firefly."

I'm glad you liked it! It was fun to write.

妹妹, meimei, is little sister.
姐姐, jiejie, is big sister.
姐妹, jiemei, is sister (combining the two characters, which is unusually logical for a language).

How're you liking Firefly? I've been getting my friends to watch it, as well as anything that has Nathan Fillion in it. (It helps that most of my friends are female and Captain Tightpants makes them swoon) If you too are a fan of Nathan Fillion then you'll enjoy episode 11 "Trash" and a show called Castle, where he plays a prolific mystery novelist and single father turned crime fighter. (And this one looks like it has a good chance of going another season)

Speaking of which, two more crushes from Castle: Detective Kate Beckett and Alexis Castle, for completely different reasons. Stana Katic is quite beautiful and her character is another strong, dominating woman who still has feelings, and Molly C. Quinn is a very yummy pale redhead type. (I feel kind of wrong saying that, she's only 16, but then again I'm only 19 so it's not creepy old pedophile territory yet) Her character's intelligent, ridiculously straight laced and a bit of a deadpan snarker as well, which minus the straight laced are just bonus points.

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

I'm enjoying it. The characters and most of the dialogue are well written, although the Chinese swearing coming out of their mouths is a bit hit-or-miss for me. The humor doesn't rely solely on one-liner zingers, and there's NO embarrassment humor, both of which are rare qualities in entertainment nowadays (I very much appreciate it). And the drama stems from more than just bed-hopping and dumb misunderstandings!

But that isn't entirely fair, saying that I like Firefly simply because it lacks the bad qualities of so much modern entertainment. The heart of it for me is the collection of excellent, complicated characters and relationships. I love seeing Mal or Jayne interacting with anyone. The sibling relationship between Simon and River is wonderful and novel. As a newlywed, I also adore and strongly empathize with Zoe/Wash. :sappy grin: And of course, it's kinda impossible to *not* like Kaylee... Inara is fine, although not as novel/engaging to me (why yes, I'm female), and Shepherd Book and River both seem more like plot objects than fully developed characters. Interesting objects, but objects. I think Mal and Simon are tied for my fav character, with Jayne, Zoe, and Wash as a great supporting trio.

The crime is fun, the tension and drama almost always succeed for me*, and they made the Old West dialogue coming out of Mal's mouth extremely natural. So yeah, it's good.

*

Spoiler: Highlight to view
That bit where the village woman immediately declaims River as a witch seemed like a random plot point to me, but watching Simon crawling up on the woodpile with her was so wonderfully tender, bordering on heartbreaking
Vandole's picture

Postulant

Haha, it sounds kind of silly now, me being like "I like Inara because she's strong willed and has emotions, which is so rare and never happens", I really like Inara for her love-hate relationship dynamic with Mal, I crush on her because I tend to have a bit of a thing for strong willed women. (Also weak willed women IRL but not in fiction) I wish she had more interaction with the rest of the crew, she doesn't really have any interesting interaction beyond acting matronly and supportive for Kaylee, Simon and River. (Supposedly, the concept of a 'space whore' was forced on Joss by Fox so that might be why her interaction with the others is so minimal and conflictless)

Haha, what great timing! I've been grappling lately with my ridiculous crush on Data, in Star Trek TNG. He's a fascinating character, but... I'm a lesbian! And yet, I find him irresistible!

I've always been a pretty terrible lesbian in the fictional-crush area, though; I've been in love with, at various times, Han Solo, Boba Fett (in the books), Frodo, Simon (from Firefly), Spock (reboot Spock, anyway), Dr. House, the tenth Doctor, Wolverine... I mean, does it get more manly than Wolverine? And yet, I was ready to faint! I will never understand.

Luckily, though, I've been finding more girlcrushes lately. Kaylee (from Firefly), Donna (from Who), Menolly (from Pern)... and best of all, Hermione. Growing up, I was always the same age as her in the newest book. She was my pretend-girlfriend for years, and I have the terrible fanfiction to prove it.

Huh, I have a lot more fictional crushes than I thought. It's a bit, umm... sad. But I guess that's what happens if you go two years intentionally not spending any time with people in real life. No worries-- the future is much brighter. I'm going back to school! Where I can once again interact with humans! Yaaaay!

3. The Conscience (McCoy, Picard)

And yes, Data and Picard were some of the strongest characters in the whole franchise, although I'll always have a soft spot for Mr. Spock.

I didnt tend to have crushes on 'people' per say, when I was a little 'un... I had a thing for bad guys who were in moral crisis. I also had brothers. so the characters I liked tended to be cartoon characters. there was a guy in samarai pizza cats I think.... and another one in one of the Bomberman games.
at the same time I was also really really into certain girl characters in books and games... there was a girl named Rachel in the Animorphs books, Rogue from the X-Men, and a woman named Quistis in Final Fantasy 8. I think those were technically crushes, but I didnt call them that then.
I also had a really fun game I'd play with mIRC people when I was 13 or 14, where I'd flirt with the bots instead of people (there werent a lot of ladies in most of those chatrooms, so to have one there that was more interested in an autoresponse computer program than the other 20 dudes in the room was pretty funny. although SOME of them were run through scripts on one of their computers, so it was sort of a person anyway.)
these days, though, it's Daniel Craig and Felicia Day and people with quirks.

Smart, sexy, little bit of a hell raiser, understands when to break the rules, & most likely has the complete Karma Sutra memorised, & has been quietly working his way through them all.

My earliest and most confusing crush. At a tender young age for me the Cartoon Network picked up Gundam Wing. I was already an anime fan before even knowing what anime was, with Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon capturing my attention on TV due to their style which was so much more attractive to me than the under-detailed or hyper-gross cartoons that flooded TV at the time (Rocko's Modern Life still makes me queasy). Well, Gundam wing came and suffice to say I was stricken immediately, I negotiated extra chores from my Dad in order to be allowed to watch this show when it came on each day after school before I started my homework. Zechs is still a fascination of mine, though my crush has diminished and my favorite character diverted to Treize, mainly cuz once Zechs took off his mask he acted like a complete asshole (apologies to non-anime fans for my name dropping). Suffice to say that a 5th grade catholic boy having a crush on a tall blonde haired man was confusing and a little scary, but it remained none-the-less...

heh, I can definitely blame Gundam Wing for my anime addiction. All my favorite animes since then have involved giant robots in some way or another.

You should look into Samurai 7. Tis a giant mecha-slash-steampunk-slash-reimagining of the original Seven Samurai by Akira Kurosawa. I heart for the steampunk, giant mecha...and it's pretty.

:love-oni: Incredibly high-quality anime. Second the love for this series. Incidentaly, my favorite character was Katsushiro (hope I spelled it right). Most of the fandom dislikes him, but he has atleast one loyal fangirl, me. Going back to the OT, my facsination with him is less of "I have a crush on this character" variety and more "I identify with/ want to be that character".

judisheshok's picture

Postulant

I didn't dislike or like him. I liked all of the group and it was the suck when anyone died. Their dynamic was quite fun to watch, at least for me. If I had to select a favorite, it would be between Gorobei and Heihachi, but not in a crush like way.

I was five when I saw an old Mae West movie on tv one sunday afternoon, & I fell instantly head over heals in love with her. Still love the female form more than the male one, just tend to fall in love with more men than women.

I am sorry for how difficult that must have been for you though.

Sure, there's plenty of hot actresses, but I usually think of them as an actress first and a role second.

My friend in college, tho--HUUUUGE crush on MacGyver. I wouldn't be surprised if that's half the reason she became an engineer. What do the rest of ya think? I'm pretty straight, but I understand what she saw in him.

He's funny in SG1 & still sexy, nut my favs from the series still stand.

When as the Colonel he tells Sam "well your the technical genius can't you..I don't know McGuyver a way home for us." I laughed about it for weeks. It was one of the most brilliant in-jokes I've ever encountered.

judisheshok's picture

Hm...I've only been through the comments now, perhaps I'll actually answer the question.

I'll have to repeat a few that others have listed, Kaylee, Inara and Simon from Firefly, not necessarily together, lol. I would also have to say Tim McGee from NCIS, and Logan Cale, from Dark Angel(which Michael Weatherly is also in...and I'm okay with that  .) Which then leads my wandering mind to Jessica Alba in Dark Angel, she's pretty hot.

There's prolly others that I'm not thinking of, but those would be the ones off the top of me head. Smile

Capriox's picture

Ah! Another Dark Angel fan! I really liked the premise of that show, although the plotting got kinda dumb, kinda fast. Still, it was the only TV show that actually motivated me to write fanfic... 30+ chapters of a novelized continuation of the show, and it's still probably 5-10 chapters from being finished.

Thees is true. It's all good through the first season, you get into the second and things get all wonky. This has been brought to you, yet again, by the idiots at Fox who can't seem to keep ANY good show on for any amount of time. *le sigh*

When I was a young'un (I'm sure it will be pointed out that I'm still fairly young, but bear with me) I had a terrible crush on Syaoran Li from Card Captor Sakura. I got through horrific amounts of fanfics at that point in my life. Later on, when Tsubasa Chronicles came out, I had a huge crush on Syaoran in that too, and I didn't like him nearly as much as Syaoran from CCS. I think it may have had something to do with the fact that I got older and didn't want to have a crush on a twelve-year-old anymore. A fictional twelve-year-old, but whatever.

I had a lot of anime crushes back then, but that's definitely the main one.

I also have/had crushes on Will from His Dark Materials (probably an offshoot of the Syaoran thing), Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, House, Captain Hastings from Agatha Christie novels, and Chiaki-san from the Nodame Cantabile drama. (Hiroshi Tamaki zomg!)

This has definitely been a fun thread!

I had virtually NO crushes on actual people growing up, just on characters... First on the list was Remington Steele... I love Pierce Brosnan, but I love Remington Steele more...! And then Doogie Howser, Danny from Full House (my sister and best friend never stop ribbing me for liking Danny and not Jesse, but I still say Danny's adorable)...

And I don't really know if this counts as a crush, but... Winnie the Pooh! Smile I don't know what that makes me, but I so love him! Smile I even took to spelling honey 'hunny'! Biggrin

tabletop RPG character (ha, bet you thought it was going somewhere else) was based on Remington Steele. His name was 'Maxwell Pierce Steele' and he was an ex-terrorist, cook, and crytopgrapher. Uh ya.

Oh god Doogie!! I had a huge crush on him as a kid. Also Wesley Crusher, and John Connor as he appears in Terminator 2. And I'm sure a zillion others.

As I've gotten older, I've had crushes on most Drew Barrymore characters (She's hot! Plus her characters are usually at least mostly human, as opposed to shallow paper dolls), Simon AND Wash from Firefly, J.D. from Scrubs, and Vash the Stampede.

I'm sure there are others, but that's all I can think of right now.

april.raines's picture

Petitioner

It all started with Dr. McCoy - the one played by DeForrest Kelley. mmm. It's a good thing I didn't know at the time that he was really old enough to by my *grandfather* uh ya.

Then there was Encyclopedia Brown, and Sherlock Holmes - that was my mystery reading faze. Not so many literary ones after that. Then we've got Giles - accent, brains, singing voice - and Wesley - especially when he went dark in Angel. Then we go to B5 where we have Vir - I just want to pinch those cheeks and teach him about 'high numerical values' - and G'Kar - yum, yum. And maybe a bit of Bester.

Back to the books we go to the Potterverse - Lupin came first, then Snape, then Neville. Snape and Neville stayed, Lupin got annoying.

Always, there's Jimmy Stewart... because there's Jimmy Stewart.

And, most recently, there's Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.

uh, ya, I's a geek. H)

I tried watching Big Bang Theory but couldn't get past more than a few episodes because it depressed me that the people laughing probably had no idea why the jokes were funny apart from 'oh look, nerds can't interact with anyone else, hahaha'. I like jokes about science, but it's just . . . not a show I enjoy Blum 3 Sheldon was pretty good though XD

Amy's picture

Nerds I either personally know or know of watch BBT for the jokes. Many are even cool with the knowledge that there are a lot of people laughing due to the "nerds interacting" factor. Most of them know that they as nerds are cool in their own way. Sheldon is my Favourite character from the show. I just have a problem with most sitcoms that over use any bit of humor during the episode. But I know that's just me saying "yes, I got it, next joke please."

chaos_theory64's picture

I openly admit I am nerdy, and I watch the show for the jokes about science. They really are funny if you understand them. I also relate to it a bit, and feel like a mix of all four guys at times. Plus Penny is rather attractive.
