Good news!

I have a whole list of happy today, but one really big one: I got my acceptance letter today for the nursing program! So exciting--orientation in 3 weeks. Sadly, second undergrad degrees dont get financial aid, but I did get some decent loans. Hopefully one of the hospitals will give me a scholarship for signing over the next few years of my life.

I made really good money at work tonight (sometimes waiting tables has its upside), so tomorrow I'm going to pay for a real haircut; no more great clips! Also bought tickets to see coldplay with a few friends. It will be my first concert since I was pregnant (I saw She Wants Revenge)

And there was a new chapter today... too bad it was such a downer Blum 3

That about sums it up, but hooray for good stuff just when I needed it!

How long ago were you pregnant? :x

The Which's picture

fair question. More than 2 years ago now! I was the designated driver, and I was the only one throwing up (I just deleted a loooong rant on alcohol and pregnancy in the US. If you care to, scroll down to the Should Pregnant Women Drink At All? section)

ETA: I maybe had 5 drinks the entire time I was pregnant--I couldn't keep down much of anything for a loooooong time--but total strangers getting in my face when I had champagne on New Year's eve pissed me off. Or when I had a beer at a friend's birthday party. I felt more comfortable with one glass of wine than I did with diet coke--I gave that up for the duration of my pregnancy.

ETA, again: I can't help it, I get ranty on this subject. It drives me nuts that people thought they could tell me I was a horrible person for having a drink, when there is NO EVIDENCE that even seven drinks a week cause problems!

Congratulations!! That's very exciting.

Also, I always wondered why everyone made such a big deal about having wine or whatever while pregnant (not in large quantities of course), when before "modern medicine" women did it all the time. There's probably a whole lot more to this that I don't know (read: not into science and have never researched it).

the better safe than sorry camp, but I'd never confront a pregnant woman just because I saw her having a drink. It's none of my damn business.

The Which's picture

I was in the better safe than sorry camp about artificial sweeteners. Probably no harm, but I don't know.

I researched the alcohol issue A LOT, and I decided that the "one drink is enough to make your baby retarded" camp is just... insane. I can understand not drinking it, just in case, though, because protective mode sure kicks in.

For me, it was probably more important that I had a few night to relax and feel social, since I spent most of my pregnancy pretty anxious and isolated. One glass of wine here and there did far more good than it possibly could have done harm.

ETA: also my daughter is a genius Blum 3

Raigne's picture

Embodiment

It's none of my damn business. I see a woman with a drink and I don't know anything about her habits. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure what I'd do if I saw a woman with a pitcher of cocktails, knocking them back. That'd be a big struggle between what's socially responsible and what's being nosy. I almost think politeness would win, in spite of the fact that the woman's obviously not improving the gene pool.

ETA: Let's not get into the baby genius thing.

I'll wait to see if she can put me into a fancy retirement home when I'm old and decrepit. :biglol:

because genius and $$$ go hand-in-hand...

(notsomuch...I've had some brilliant professors who don't make a huge killing, and there are idiots who win the lottery.)

I mean, sometimes they do--don't get me wrong. But it's not the measuring stick I'd use. Blum 3

that's what she meant.

While I realize it takes money to put a parent in a super nice nursing home, it also takes CARING ENOUGH about said parent to put them in a super nice nursing home.

Me, I'd love to be able to take care of my parents/MIL in my home, but depending on their condition, I may not be physically able to care for them as they should be cared for.

Erm...I think I wandered off topic there..

The Which's picture

I meant that I would withhold judgement on whether or not she was genius until she was useful to me Blum 3

Y'know, regardless of IQ score.

(it was supposed to be funny)

What To Expect While Your Expecting sez:

Weigh risk vs. benefit. A glass of wine for your anniversary is a teeny risk to your baby, while the benefit of sharing a glass of wine is priceless.

(not quite word for word, but close.)

So if I want a wine cooler after the packers leave for the day, I'm going to damn well have a wine cooler, tyvm.

ETA: Congrats on the nursing school acceptance!! Now if you get pregnant again and drink, you can just say 'I'm a nurse, I know what's healthy. Mind your own business.' hehe

SO, is that to say that you are going to be pregnant for your move back?

Katie's picture

Embodiment

I AM pregnant. Due oct 18th. The movers come the 4th. Biggrin

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Did you tell us that before?!? :? Did I miss somthing, again? Blum 3

Go check out the 'don't panic' thread. Why yes, I AM too lazy to link it for you.

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

Don't worry, got it covered. The link part anyway

Okay, so maybe I didn't miss it. Just didn't remember it. It was one of the topics I didn't really have much to add.

So, two questions:
1)Does the good sex shirt still fit and would you post a pic of it under "Irony"
2)When are we going to start the baby pool?

Katie's picture

and maybe I'll post a pic when I'm showing a bit more.

Baby pool?

We all chip in $$ and pick delivery dates and the closest wins, I think.

Katie's picture

Embodiment

well since I already posted the 'due' date...do you have to guess the sex, too?

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

Ah, the "due date" is just a guess. I think you'll be a little late. Then again, the stress from moving could bring it on early...

Capriox's picture

Hahahahahahahahaha

I just moved eight due-within-two weeks cows across the street from the dry cow pasture (read: late pregnancy vacation) to the calving pen. Three of them calved within 36 hours of the move, so your comment was perfectly timed to make me giggle. Beware moving stress, indeed!

Random trivia: cow's gestation is the same length as human's.

Congratulations Smile

Also, nothing to do with anything, but I wanted to say that I like your avatar. It always makes me look twice, and generally it makes me smile. It also makes me want to start take violin lessons again, but that's neither here nor there.

The Which's picture

I always thought of it as a cello! Hehe, matter of perception!

TheBoy's picture

I read it as cello, also.

... I know another person who uses a color version of that avatar, and she actually plays the cello.

The Which's picture

I played the cello from 5th through 9th grade. I doubt I could play twinkle twinkle now, though.

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

*shrugs* I used to play violin for about a year, so perhaps that's it. Nifty either way.
