suggestion for website viewing

I'd like to suggest either an RSS feed, or a page similar to the "newest" button up top but that JUST has chapters and bonus stories. I do a lot of reading from my phone and sometimes if its been a busy forum day, i find it slightly difficult to locate the chapter if there is one. RSS feeds are great cause they're plain text and load fast, but even a page with just recent stories alone would be really neat!

If this already exists and i'm too retarded to find it, just lemme know! Smile i would not put it past me.

Thanks!

It might be this one:

It's a bit slow to recognize new chapters/bonus stories, but it should work fine.

Or just go here -

All kinds of different feeds to suit various desires ...

You just make an excellent snake hunter.

this comment leaves me quite perplexed.

and I even tried thinking about it with different possible interpretations of "snake" too...

The Which's picture

and I decided it might be in reference to this, possibly?

"It’s a joke about a man buying a cobra for a pet, and then dying from being bit by it."

Zandu Ink's picture

"If it had been a snake, it would have bitten me."

And a common happenstance for the Crocodile Hunter to be bitten. Ergo, you're a snake hunter.

For those of us who don't use rss feeds and such, the story being scattered amongst all of the "forum" (sorry but this format really does not feel like a forum to me...) posts is extremely irritating. It really is a testament to how well written and interesting the story is that I haven't given up and stopped reading because I am pissed off /every single time I come here/ because it's so annoying to find the most recent chapter sometimes. Or, it's easy to find the most recent but maybe I've missed one or two and I have no idea until I start reading the most recent one. And that's not even taking into account the bonus stories. I wouldn't be surprised if I've missed half of the bonus stories just because I couldn't freaking find them.

It really cannot be that difficult to separate the story off to it's own area so that it can be easily found by everyone, not just the people who come here daily and who participate in the "forum".

...because the story is most definitely NOT scattered through the forums. It's not even in the forums. It's very organized, and you can move from chapter to chapter within the story itself. There are tables of contents and everything.

BUT HAVING SAID THAT, I CAN UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT. And I'm upper-casing it just to make sure you see that. Smile

When I set this place up, I never expected the non-story parts of the site to take off the way they did. Never in a bajillion years. Now that they have, you're right; I need to reorganize the menu to make it easier to find new bits of story. Let me think on that, and thanks for the prod.

A link for book 3 table of contents: http://www.meilinmiranda.com/last-royal-mistress

And a link for all the bonus stories: http://www.meilinmiranda.com/bonus-stories

If you don't want to have to go through the forums, just use those links directly.

Also, if you click the "forum" link on the top bar you get a very traditional looking forum setup--I'd guess you were looking at the "newest" screen, which is sort of hard to follow if you don't visit regularly.

Thank you.

It's not that difficult to separate the story off to its own area. Options such as:

a) Table of contents for Book 3 and Bonus Stories, which The Which just linked you to

or

b) The chapters-only version of Newest, at http://www.meilinmiranda.com/taxonomy/term/1%2B2

They just don't happen to be in the top menu. If Newest bothers you, use the chapters-only one. That's the one I have bookmarked, despite being (somewhat) active on the forums as well, because I care about story WAY more than forums and I'll only click Newest in the top menu if the chapters-only one doesn't show any updates.

The only problem with it is that it's slightly slower than newest-first to update with new chapters. But it does work just fine, and seems to be what you're looking for.

EDIT: I forgot. MeiLin, if you're going to be updating that page ever, could we set it so it doesn't show Official Artwork and Leaderboards and Icons and stuff? It's not hugely annoying since usually there's very infrequent art, but the recent flood of leaderboards sort of made my head explode Biggrin

Banshee's picture

Your "chapters-only" link isn't actually chapters only, but it is better than the newest screen so I may try it out.

My main problem is the fact that I had to come into the forums to find these links. There might be tables of contents and so on, but if there aren't links on the main page of the site for them then no new readers can find them without coming in here and basically saying "what the hell?"

There are now links on the home page to the beginning of the story, the tables of contents for all three books and the bonus stories, and the chapters-only page. I'm hoping at some point to get the stupid drop-down menus to work without BREAKING EVERYTHING! arrgh!

Raigne's picture

So I can make it easiest for you to figure out, how do you do your CSS styles? Are they in a separate document, in the head of the document or in the actual tags?

ETA: Also, if the best way for me to do it does end up using some javascript, can you show me what you were trying to do and explain why it didn't work, so I have an idea of what may or may not break the site?

ETA again: Got the web developer bar so I can peek at your external style sheets. Still need to know if you write them all yourself or if an editor makes them for you.

I have now added links all over Gods' green earth to everything I can think of without using the stupid drop-down menus that refuse to work! grrr! There is a link at the top of the Newest First page, there are links on the home page, all Gods' chillun got links. If I missed a logical spot, lemme know. Smile Thanks! No, seriously, thanks.

The only problem I have is that some replies become twisted into one word sentences that form a weird ladder so I end up trying to read things that

look
like
this
for
very
long
paragraphs
That
Become
very
hard
on
my
eyes
to
read.

It does get very frustrating. I hate to skip over anything at the feedback portion of the chapters but sometimes I have no choice. I don't think it's just my computer because only a few will be like that. I usually see several posts that look normal (to me) then several in that weird lineal ladder format, then there are more that look normal for me.

I don't understand it, just know that it hurts my eyes & head to try & read.

TheBoy's picture

Embodiment

that's a side-effect of the each reply gets further indented than the post it's replying to...if you're desperate to read one, click "reply," and you can get it widescreen. Smile

Please leave a note in the long thread that you're commenting at the end, and do that. I do it.

This really just burns me out on reading, as well. It has stopped me from posting on the vast majority of threads that I actually feel motivated to post in otherwise.

I understand the root of the problem is in the formatting. I don't know if it would be possible to have collapsible comments once it starts to run off the screen. I guess I just wanted to commiserate.

Amy's picture

For the commiseration. But look now there are ways that we can read the collapsed posts & make our own posts after we get done reading what others have said. BTW Love the avitar.

Thank you both ideas will save me no end of frustration. Dance 4
