I WAS KIDDING

On my wish list, I had a Kindle. I had a Kindle on it not because I actually expected anyone to buy me one, but because, in fact, I really do want one. It's like some people put Ferarris or Tiffany diamond rings on their wish lists, you know? You're serious, but you're not.

Well, one of you dopes bought me one! And she knows who she is! Biggrin

It arrived today. I am gobsmacked.

Heyla, silly

Good for whoever did that! -applauds- And you should never put something so wonderful that it would embarrass you to actually receive it on a wish list, that only guarantees that someone will (deservedly) think you more than worthy of it and send it along. -g-

Anyway, enjoy your new toy.

far more than just a Kindle. By yourself you're worth all the Kindles in the world. Plus some.

If you add in your wonderful writing, well..... I don't think they make numbers that high.

Or perhaps they do, and it's called infinity.

TheBoy's picture

just a concept.

there are even different kinds of infinity--it blows my mind. (brother=math-guy, me=guh!)

I know what you mean! My father, sister and husband are all engineers!

What the hell is an imaginary number?! How can I be graded on something that isn't real >.>

Was that you can have two infinite sets... and still know that one's more.. infinite? Seriously? Either it's endless or it's not. Who cares if one's getting more infinite than the other. o_O;

That's amazing! Biggrin

Yay, whoever bought it for you! Yay, Meilin for getting a sweet present!

You absolutely deserve it.

Does that mean I shouldn't send the diamonds?

Like everyone has said you deserve it and so much more to boot.

All two pieces of it--three if you count my wedding and anniversary bands separately. That and a sterling silver heart lock with Sir's symbol on it are all the "real" jewelry I own. The rest of it is costume.

Sir had it all cleaned, since I had to take it off for the hospital. When he brought it back, they were in little Tiffany blue ultrasuede pouches, which I think I'll use as imp cases. Maybe I'll put them in trade packages.

Now I want to know what Sir's symbol looks like!

It gives too much away. Some day, maybe.

I can't remember what I was googling (ok, I can remember, but I won't give it away Wink ), but your "real" website came up as the first choice.

... your fans are kinda, sorta crazy, right? I think it's high time you realized the sheer amount of crazy involved... Wink

Mad props to the lady who bought it, and wishes for much entertainment to be derived from the gift for you, MeiLin.

So, is it everything you hoped it would be? Should we all get them for ourselves?

Oh no. Too much curiousity for TDM. We'll respect her privacy but damn, I want to know!

She was a friend before the story started, but we'd lost touch years ago. She knows enough about me to guess at my identity from what I say here; I don't try too hard to disguise it and if you know me, you can figure it out pretty easily. She is prone to wacky presents like this. Smile

It's an ebook reader. It makes reading ebooks a LOT nicer than reading them on the computer. It weighs less than an average paperback but feels more like a book in the hand than a computer does, it's not a backlit screen, it allows me to subscribe to magazines like The New Yorker without having a print New Yorker lying around the house or tossed in the recycling, it's got free wireless, it operates as an MP3 player...it's an awesome thing.

:jawdrop: sounds like condensed awesome. Too bad it's not available in Europe...

... and the easy shopping from Amazon, there are plenty of alternatives available for us Rightpondians. Most are even available in actual brick and mortar stores in France (CyBook), the UK and Germany (PRS-505) or the Netherlands (Bebook/Hanlin V3). Online shops like Justread.de or apoloxxi.com have them all available online. The MobileRead Wiki has a good overview of all available models.

There are also persistent rumours that the Kindle 2 will be available in Germany shortly, but so far they are just that. Rumours.

a built-in light, though? Can I read in the car in the dark? That would be a major selling point for me.

MeiLin's picture

but you can buy one. I have a little booklight and a cover that should be here today or tomorrow. Any itty bitty booklight type thing should work. I find I like having to have light to use it; it really does cut down on eye strain.

can you link it? I would love to know how it goes, especially with attaching it to the Kindle. Thanks!

... of book lights. I have the DoubleFlex, in some circles known as the 'bug light' for the vaguely bug-like look the two antennas convey to your gadget. It's great. The brightness is just right, the batteries last forever, and the two independently adjustable goose necks are great for placing the bulbs in such a way that the whole screen is evenly lit, without the bulbs being in the way. Also, the lenses are good, and there isn't a lot of light spill - good for reading in bed with a spouse who wants to sleep but is sensitive to light in the room.
