Red String!

Thought I'd try to resurrect this thing since Red String is now updating five days a week and bringing on more plot than ever. Specifically, Aiko is blowing my mind right now! I thought she was just a good-natured ditz after her first appearance, but now she seems kind of amoral. I'm kind of wondering about Ken'ichi now too, although maybe he just made a bad romantic decision.

Also, Reika and Eiji squee! So adorable!

when they met, his Dad was nice and he and Emi fell in love, but then something happened with his business, like maybe his father died, and he had a lot more responsibility? That seems to happen in TV and movies a lot, and ends up changing the person and ruining their family. I feel like it's one of those things where he just has to realize that Kazuo can be happy, blah blah blah and he'll have a change of heart. Or at least will realize that Kazuo isn't necessarily just like him and that he can live his own life. I sound like a Lifetime movie Blum 3

I think that either A)he's just an arrogant, controlling, son-of-a-@#$%&, or B) something earlier in his life went very wrong, which messed him up big time.

Oooh, I thought I couldn't stand that guy before, but now? I REALLY hate Kazuo's dad! No1 and I read it together last night when it went up and we were both like: Run, Emi, run! :O Dickweeds, the men in that family!

Saramander's picture

Yeah, Kazuo's dad definitely =supreme douchebag right now. I think he's probably extremely unhappy with how his life has turned out because he was forced in to the business the way Kazuo is being forced. I suspect his ass-hattery stems from frustration with Kazuo for belittling his personal sacrifice by refusing to make the same one. Emi should call his bluff, anyone who could be such an asshole is not worth staying with.

I think calling Kazuo a dickweed is going a bit far - He doesn't seem to think he has a choice in the matter. He's hurt, and reacting in a bad way. That's my opinion at least Kiss 2

for breaking Miharu's heart. I think he's salvageable, but by the time he realizes his mistake Miharu may have moved on.

Gudy's picture

... for the way he lashed out at Miharu (which I find kind of understandable under the circumstances), but for the fact that he doesn't have the balls to apologize and explain things to her once everyone had cooled off a bit. He seems to be too busy wallowing in his own misery for that, and I have to give some props to Kikuko for calling him out on this.

I admit to cribbing the "dickweed" from somewhere in the previous comment-fest, because I like to be silly and referential like that. :nerd:

I'm not thrilled with Kazuo right now, though, because he could be dealing with everything better, and I don't think it's so unreasonable to expect him to. For example, he could have told Miharu the truth instead of yelling at her. He could have made a bold decision to strike out on his own. He could have spoken to his mother, and/or to Miharu's parents. Instead he's just being a cold, willfully hurtful little bitch. Yes, he is under pressure, but that can only excuse so much. Being contrasted to Kikuko doesn't help him any either, because she's in a very similar position but she still behaves ethically and with maturity.

As far as Emi goes...dump the sucker! Now! You can save the day!

I finally started reading the webcomic when I heard everybody on here talking about it . ..

And I completely agree with the 'Kazuo and his father are dickweeds' sentiment.

At least Miharu hasn't completely collapsed, she's really trying to be happy.

Yeah, but I very much fear she will crack down anytime soon... Especially if Kazuo gets another "girlfriend", or more "bride-to-be"...
And ok, maybe Kazuo's dad is very unhappy, but that's no excuse as far as I'm concerned. The only thing he will do is make his son as unhappy, and I really don't get people hurting other in the same way they get hurt themselves... And I entirely blame Kazuo too. If he is able to do something like that, then Miharu is probably better off without him...

Maybe I'm just too forgiving ^^; I don't agree with his behavior, but I can see where it's coming from. His dream is dying, he's being forced to abandon the woman he loves.

so after aages of being away i come back and find bunches of missed chapters and a discussion on one of my favourite comics!

personally, i'm hoping for emi to call miharu for a sneaky lunch and plotting session.

and i can't join in with the hate on kazuo brigade. does anyone remember what that first heartbreak was like? especially in the circumstances that he's trying to deal with? give the poor kid a break. no teenager deals well with disappointment, familial or romantic or whatever. combine that with teenage dude hormones? insta-jerk, but i have faith in him! i know pretty soon we'll be seeing our old lovable kazuo again!

Just tell the "forgot your password?" thingie and it'll email you a link to get in. Then you can reset your password. I think Kazuo will come around, but I'm still mad at him.

ahaha found the forgotten password link!

anyway, yeah, i just can't be mad at him. i can't imagine what his head must be like as he's going through all this.

in other news, moar fuuko, pl0x! i'm really interested in how things turn out for her, i

I wish Eiji and Reika would just get on with it!! Biggrin

Depends why she's flirting with Eiji. If it's legitimate "I want you" flirting, I disapprove. If it's just to make Eiji uncomfortable for her own amusement, that's unkind but not necessarily immoral. Or (I've seen this one a couple times) she could have decided that the "adorable naive kiddies" clearly want each other and are taking too long to admit it, so she's forcing the issue the only way she knows how.

Also, my opinion of her would change depending on if the baby was an accident they just took advantage of or if they planned it in advance. I lean towards the former since purposefully getting pregnant when you already know you'll get an abortion seems unnecessarily complicated, problem-prone and risky. But that's just me.

As of right now, no idea how her inner mind works so I'm withholding judgment for the time being. She *does* seem a bit mercenary, but then, so does Ken.

Oddfish's picture

I learned in the story comments that abortion in Japan is not a big deal the way it is here in the States. People look at it as irresponsible, but in much the same way not studying is irresponsible. So I've factored out the abortion entirely. The flirting, though, that's got a 2/3 chance of being bad news if we assume it can be a kind of malicious joke, a serious attempt, or a ploy to get Eiji with Reika. Ken'ichi and Aiko both seem kind of self-absorbed or ditzy, so I'm wavering on the flirting being a ploy, because I'm just not sure they noticed the kids' goings-on.

Just...holy crap, they seemed so bubbly and innocent at first glance, and now they're coming off as mercenary! Which is what Gina does, and she does it well. Gives us all things to speculate about while we're drooling for the next page. :love-oni:

I wasn't thinking of the abortion itself as something I'd consider immoral; I was thinking of "If you are using abortion as an ends to something immoral" like getting money out of his parents. Like it might not be immoral to take a picture but it is if you're using it to blackmail someone, etc.

Oddfish's picture

Aha. Although I'd hope, in that case, that they'd just fib about her being pregnant. If nothing else that's a lot of trouble to go through and it cuts into your profits.

Wow. That sounded way more evil than it was supposed to.

but I have a really hard time remember whose who! I have to re-read a few pages back each time a new one is up or else I really have no idea what is going on.

... somewhat relieved. Actually, my inability to keep the characters straight was one of the major reasons why I gave up on Red String. (The other being my low tolerance for teenage drama.)

have trouble with that too. The blond hair helped me keep the main character straight, but once she went back to black like everyone else, I kind of lost the thread. I still read it, but I spend a lot of time confused.

No1 Daughter is my touchstone if I lose track of the cast. "Duh, Mom, that's not Kazuo, that's Eiji!" The key is the hair (style, not color). It's subtle in some cases, but always distinctive.
