Money crap

So here's my difficulty. I've been out of work for a long while. The little town I live in and go to college in is bursting at the seams with college kids needing work, and the tiny town just can't provide it. I apparently can't get unemployment because leaving my job that paid $40 a week, when gas to get there was over that amount at the time, is not acceptable for their purposes. I don't have a kid, I'm not under eighteen, and I don't have any other things wrong with me that incline the Department of Labor to offer me any other help.

It hurts to say it, but I was relying on my mom to help me out with rent. We made this agreement several months ago, when I told her what my money from school would cover. But now I can't get in touch with her at all. She won't answer her phone unless she has a good reason to put off calling me back. My rent's not late for a few more days, and my complex has always been very understanding with these situations...

If you had to make $300 in a week or two, what would you do?

Short term medical study?

Hm...I have no idea what those entail. Do you think they'd be in a newspaper classifieds or something like that?

At my university there are fliers looking for guinea pigs all over the bulletin boards in our Psychology Building, Anatomy building, and in the university's hospital, all of which do a fair bit of research. They're usually like those apartment ads where you can rip of a strip of paper with a phone number. The fliers will usually mention any monetary compensation for the study.

Awesome. I'll keep an eye out for those and ask around some departments.

Call another family member or friends?

My friends are all in a money slump as well, it seems. And the rest of my family are all broke hillbillies. = P

Sometimes you can donate blood for some money. I'm not sure how much, but as long as you're over ~115 lbs, disease&drug free, and not anemic, you can donate. If you're vegetarian and you don't get much iron, I recommend eating a protein bar the morning before you go.

ETA: "In most larger cities, there are clinics that will pay you up to $35 or so for some of your plasma, which you can donate twice a week." And apparently you can also sell your hair if it's long and you're willing to cut it. http://www.walletpop.com/blog/2008/06/21/raising-cash-in-a-hurry-6-sell-...

Some other suggestions:
- Pawn or sell anything you can bear parting with on craigslist, and make the buyer drive to you.
- Put up fliers/craigslist ads advertising yourself as a babysitter, computer-fixer, lawn-mower...
- Maybe you could offer to work as a substitute teacher at any nearby grade schools? I don't think my mom had to get certified or anything when she did that, but I don't know whether you get paid for it.
- Offer to lease your living room couch to someone if they're willing to pay rent. You can advertise this on craigslist or in fliers

Good luck!

There's a place near me that does that. Company called BioLife but takes about a month to get close to what you said you need.

Dye your hair, get a pair of funky/cool glasses, and, uh, well...hey, it's a living!

Amazon has this thing called amazonmechanicalturk. Basically you do really simple things that machines can't do, like write reviews or transcribe a video. I've only done a few and you need to get $10 before you can take money out, but there are a bunch that are a dollar or two and it's just writing a few paragraphs. You can use your Amazon account if you already have one, if not its pretty easy.

I'd forgotten all about that.

So you'd say you recommend it? I think I could only earn gift certificate, but that's quite nice too.

I'm not sure exactly how that works yet, since you have to get $10 to withdraw and I'm trying to wait until I have a whole bunch. But all of the assignments are really easy, so yeah, I would recommend it.

Most universities and colleges have a fund that I have mentally named the "OMGI'msofucked fund" (I'm sure the official things has a different name). Basically, it's an emergency scholarship that they'll give a student who's utterly fucked money-wise. You go in to the financial aid office, explain that you're about to get kicked out of your apartment, and they'll give you a huge stack of forms to fill out, and make you jump through all kinds of hoops, but ultimately, they'll give you money.

Hope this helps.

My April rent still hasn't come through. x.x Turns out trusting family wasn't the best idea... BUT! I looked into your idea, Someone, and it looks like there's some hope springing forth. I'm not sure that our school has a grant of this type, but I can request an increase in my financial aid loan. My SO needs more money to go to a required summer class, and they basically just upped the money he received for Spring instead of making him wait for money for summer. We didn't know they could do this, and it put a spanking-new $1000 into his bank account, within a couple days.

Now, this is all exciting, but that money has to go to his school--which still means he'll be graduating a year or so earlier than we predicted. But I can apply for the same increase, which takes 30 seconds and a signature, and be set!

Thank you so much for your advice that got me looking into this. I-m so happy I'm so grateful!

Do you have old textbooks you could sell? I know I have a ton of textbooks I'm never going to use again, and if I really needed cash I would sell them. You can often sell them on Amazon or on you campus for just under what someone would have to pay at the bookstore, which is often $50-$100.

I would also check around and see if there's a temp agency in your town. A lot of college students look for regular jobs, and temping isn't always something they consider, so there may be some openings. Temping is often easy office work that they just need someone to do for a few days or a week or two.

If you were a boy, I would say donate some sperm, but donating eggs is a complicated (if lucrative) procedure, and I'm not sure I can recommend it with a clean conscience.

Maybe not as good for the short term, but....you could, in general, see about increasing your student loan. When you overpay the university, they give you a refund check, even if you've overpaid with loans.

But a great way to pick up a little extra money is to apply with www.tutor.com, as long as you have access to the internet on your own computer. You can work pretty much as little or as much as you want, and if you can tutor in any math or science for middle school and up, they're almost always hiring. It's a little harder if you'd only be comfortable tutoring in the humanities, but I thought I'd bring it up. It starts off at $9 an hour, and then goes up to $11 an hour if make it past the first month, but the application process tends to take a couple weeks. It's also subject to self-employment tax, but hey, it's still better than a lot things.
