Upstate NY Meet-Up: Sterling Renaissance Festival

So Raigne and I mentioned the Sterling Renaissance Festival because we're both from NYS, and V was poking me to look for a meet-up site near me since I can't make WCW and it occurred to me that the local Ren fest would be an EXCELLENT place for a meet-up! It runs almost every weekend in July and August, so we have our choice of dates, and it's not terribly far from Syracuse, NY, which is connected by Rt. 90 and Rt. 81 to the rest of the northeast.

Information...
Location/Directions (plenty of parking here!):
http://www.sterlingfestival.com/directions/tabid/62/Default.aspx
Dates (each weekend is themed):
http://www.sterlingfestival.com/SpecialEvents/tabid/55/Default.aspx
Tickets (not too bad):
http://www.sterlingfestival.com/buytickets/tabid/53/Default.aspx

So... anyone interested? We could pretend we were at a historical Tremontine re-enactment (circa Warin the Wise's reign!) ;-D

It's worth it to note that tickets can usually be gotten cheaper than full price. Many of the events that take place during themed weekends aren't specific to the theme and do occur on other weekends. And, the friend I'm going with this year had suggested meeting up with someone else there, who apparently camps there and stays for the whole weekend. I'm not sure what kinds of accommodations there are in the area, but I'm pretty sure there's a couple bed and breakfasts.

Capriox's picture

Aha! I found a link to nearby accommodations on their site, including several nearby campgrounds if that's your thing.

Places to stay: http://www.sterlingfestival.com/directions/Accommodations/tabid/141/Defa...

Never been to a renfaire and I love that part of NYS.

V's picture

My other suggestion was for Capriox to free up the corner of a barn some time during the warm weather, work us to exhaustion doing something useful (putting up fences?) then show us how fresh goat is supposed to taste. She might have to meet some of us first to learn how most of our crazy is the good kind, tho.

fairnymph's picture

Embodiment

I would totally work for fresh goat.

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

I'd muck a couple stalls for that.

And help butcher.

But I'm not going to be in NY anytime soon.

poo.

And here I am, with plenty of experience mucking out goat/cow barns and building fences, stuck all the way on the West Coast. Not faaaaair
*shakes futile fist*

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

I felz it. I'm in the midwest and won't be able to make it out there either.

Of course, we'd have to have someone ready with the black light check before we slaughter...

applejax's picture

Supplicant

I'd be back home by then, so I'd have access to a car and might be able to make it. I'd need somewhere to stay however, since it would be a pretty long drive for me.

I'd also need advice on what to wear, (costumes! yay!) but that's the fun part right?

Raigne's picture

Embodiment

that they have costume rental there. At least, I know they did about 4 years ago. I haven't bothered to check the last couple times I went though.

scrapper's picture

Postulant

I'd love to come, I love Ren Faires, the knights, the big turkey legs, the jousting, all sorts of good stuff! I could help with goats too, it would be a new adventure! Smile

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

Hmm, that looks like six of us interested. The only other person I know for sure is in NYS and therefore might be interested is Shinjinarenai.

Which of the weekends would work best for y'all? I think we're best off avoiding the opening weekend (it's also the Fourth of July!). I can't make it the weekend of July 18th/19th. That leaves us with July 11th/12th, July 25th/26th, and the first three weekends in August.

fairnymph's picture

Embodiment

Is my vote!

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

Well, we know what the Enology vote is... Wink

I'm okay with that weekend (although as a nondrinker, I'll probably spend most of my time stomping the grapes :P) if others would like to go then, too.

scrapper's picture

Postulant

August should work for me. Parts of July are out, so that should be just fine!

kalinka's picture

I finally looked at this thread, and I must also vote for the Wine weekend. I'll be heading home to Georgia from Vermont that weekend so I'll magically be in the area.

Also, LOOKIT I HAVE A NEW SHINY BADGE. Biggrin

Capriox, it's so sweet of you to think of me! Thank you!
I'd love to be in on this thing. I'll be staying in Albany most of the summer, with the exception of when my host sister comes to visit at some point. (squee! I haven't seen her in years!) If this falls when she is coming, I'm sure she'd be happy to go too. Her English isn't great, but she's the sweetest little Japanese girl ever. I think she'd be facinated by a ren faire! And I'd love to talk farming with you, Capriox. I grew up on a hobby farm and was in 4H, you know. :biglol:
Around what part of the state is home for you, applejax? If it's anywhere near me, I'm sure there'll be room in the car.

applejax's picture

Supplicant

home is in Connecticut. But i could probably throw a rock to NYS, that's how close I am. I live in Danbury, about a 5hr drive all the way to the faire. But if there's anyway I could drive to Albany and hop in with you, maybe it would be more feasible. Mom still isn't too keen on me driving long distances by myself.

fairnymph's picture

Embodiment

I imagine lots of people would be on my way and I have a station wagon.

V's picture

Embodiment

I'd drive right through Danbury if I make it (and I plan to). That's another option if you need it.

scrapper's picture

Postulant

I'm in CT, so I will be driving right by as well, so no worries!

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

but I'm not sure if I'll be available then. I've also never been to a Ren fair. Would I have to buy special clothes or anything? Is there anything I should know?

The Which's picture

Embodiment

I dont think I can make it to NY, but I will be going to the renaissance festival in Ohio, and I plan on ordering something like this.

You dont have to wear a costume, but it's so much fun if you do.

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

We've got time before we need to nail down everything. I know it's far enough away that people's schedules are still up in the air; I just wanted to get people talking about it now. We have until May to get the "early bird" discounts on tickets, so there isn't exactly a rush Wink

Ren Fest: entertaining to walk around in normal clothes, enjoy the shows, eat the faire food, and mebbe pick up an unusual trinket. Lots of people enjoy going in costume, too, although it isn't at all required. I won't be dressing up, if it's any comfort.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

Thanks! It might be fun to dress up, but all of the clothes I've seen that look nice are super expensive, and I'm not sure I'm up for spending that much on an outfit I might only wear once. If that's the case, and you won't be dressing up either, I might be more inclined to go. It sounds like a lot of fun!

V's picture

Embodiment

I'd be much more comfortable going there in boring modern clothes with a group of the same Smile Or with a group sporting MLM gear.

Raigne's picture

Embodiment

But they used to have costume rental if it's something you are interested in doing. Don't know if they still do it though. I am always a little iffy about wearing things other people have worn though. Of course. I also know how to use a sewing machine and once in awhile am motivated enough to make something like that...

fairnymph's picture

Embodiment

If we're at all similar in measurements. Smile Loosely tied you'd get the looks but it'd be comfy.

applejax's picture

Supplicant

since I wanted to buy a corset anyway, I was going to be half Ren/half normal, maybe with a Mei pin to go along.

scrapper's picture

Postulant

Mainly because the only Ren faire type thing I have is a velvety blue dress, that is just a tad overdone for the event. I do love it though. Perhaps I can find something in the meantime....

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

Let's plan on meeting up during one of the festival's August weekends, then, with a tentative goal for the 15th/16th for now. I'll bump this thread once a month between now and then to remind us to finalize things and see if we can't get a few more folks to join us as summer plans clarify.

Biggrin

Raigne's picture

Embodiment

Now. Do I wait til then to go with my friend, or do I go twice and make that my goal date to have a car by?

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

Giving the Sterling, NY renfest meet-up thread a bump for all the newcomers who might be interested. Information & links are in the original post above.

And a reminder for the rest of us: day tickets are $3 cheaper if you order them before May 31st vs. the price at the gate. Does an August weekend, probably August 15th, still work for everyone?

applejax's picture

Supplicant

but not the 1st or the 8th. Or whatever the first two weekends are. Other than that I think would be fine (as long as the rents let me go after being in Spain for a week Blum 3 )

scrapper's picture

Postulant

I'm pretty sure I could still come then, August 15th sounds just fine!! Seems so far away, but I guess it will be here sooner than we know it!

TheGrayCrayon's picture

Devotee

I have never been to a ren fair and the last time i announced i had decided to go to a gathering of likeminded internet dwellers i wrecked my car the same day. but i am not one for portents and omens (im realy just a bad driver, I swear it would be easier if we all just rode horses.) and as such i throw my hat into the ring. Then i pick my hat up and put it back on my head.....cuz hey its MY hat. A few days off of work in August shouldn't be a problem and if Fairnymphs offer of a ride is still viable i'd love to take it up (i.e. relieve my hunk of junk car of the stress, and the other drivers on the road the hazard). So there it is I want to go. Add me to the list. Write down my name. Print out the travel maps and stock up the road trip munchies. TGC is on his way to.........where are we going again?.......oh yeah the Sterling Renaissance Festival!

Katie's picture

Embodiment

a yearly event? Cuz it's lookin' like I'll live in NY next year, barring military changes...

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

It could be a yearly event! This will be the first meet-up we've had out here, so it won't be a yearly event until we decide if we want to repeat it in 2010. The Sterling RenFest is an annual event - they've been at Sterling every summer for many years now.

(sorry I didn't see your question until now!)

Katie's picture

Embodiment

I've never been to a renfest, so I think I'll be going whether there's a MLM meetup in 2010 or not! Smile

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

So, is this a PCS, or ETS?

Katie's picture

Embodiment

a PCS.

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

Don't know if you've mentioned this before, but what branch is he?

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

...make my head hurt. Are us civilians allowed to know what those mean? (Okay, I'm pretty sure DoD is Dept. of Defense).

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

TDY = Temporary DutY
PCS = Permaniant Change of Station AKA Reasignment, usually only for Active Duty
ETS = Expiration Term of Service AKA your contract is up and you are out of the service unless you re-up
DoD = Department of Defence
USAR = United States Army Reserve
APO = Army Post Office

Did I miss any?

Otherwise you can always go to Acronymfinder.com, type in your letters and select the military tab

Raigne's picture

What pfc means. I can't remember what we were reading but in came up in a high school lit class, and I was impressive to my classmates xD

MeiLin's picture

That way you guys could schedule meet-ups and stuff. Smile

V's picture

Embodiment

I had a hard time finding the other version of this in the scheduler, which has its own list of comments. I'm linking from here (the forum) to there for completeness. Link!

Raigne's picture

Embodiment

Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and you will find a scheduler list in the bottom right-hand corner, underneath the Who's New list.

ETA: I am also tempted to keep bumping this a post a reminder thread at some point, since I see a few people who posted here and not there, and I know one of them's busy getting a firm grasp on the Russian language, but not where the rest are.

V's picture

Embodiment

Since, you know, I linked to it Blum 3 But I was looking through all the subforums, including the meetup forum, for a second meetup thread before it occurred to me that a date which was listed over in one corner might unlock a whole thread talking about it.

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

So, I've been talking to some other weblit authors about doing a meet-up at the Sterling RenFest this summer, similar to the MLM forum meet-up we had last year. Right now we're talking about meeting there the weekend of Aug 14th & 15th. Anyone here interested/able to join us if that end's up being the plan? V, scrapper, Raigne? Katie?

I promise I'll do my best not to come down with the plague this year and do the weekend on zero food again. Wink

(The weekends of July 17/18 and Aug 7/8 have already been veto-ed if you prefer a different date).

TheBoy's picture

Embodiment

I blame work. Not certain.

Katie's picture

Embodiment

I am so in! Holy cats, that's only an hour and a half from me..

Raigne's picture

Embodiment

Sterling's something I try to do at least annually. Probably won't be in garb this time though, since the corset no longer fits me (too big) and I don't feel like altering it. :x

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

OH! I should mention I'm trying to coordinate a more general weblit meet-up along with y'all here in the forum. Lyn Thorne Alder, author of Addergoole will be attending for sure, and I'm close to nailing down both Karen Wehrstein and Shirley Meier of Fifth Millennium universe fame - in addition to the dead-tree books, including a co-write with SM Stirling, they're the wonderful women behind Philosopher in Arms and Eclipse Court respectively.

So if you needed further incentive to come hang out with us in upstate NY, there ya go.

Gudy's picture

Embodiment

... very envious!

This is all.

V's picture

Embodiment

You guys, *and* Karen and Shirley? That's pretty much a must-attend. Dunno my plans but this would be a high priority - lots of friends and weblit goodness. I just talked to Scrapper and she'd be interested as well--I'd say we can make it happen.

We had fun staying in cabins at that RV park and would probably head back there--mountain pies FTW. I would say this meetup deserves its own thread any time.

Also, I haven't gotten around to writing it up yet but I was thinking of floating http://sjtucker.com/ne_event.php as a possible meetup for MLM and/or PiA, too.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

We have an events calendar here. Know it, use it! Biggrin

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

whoops, forgot. Done!

Katie's picture

Embodiment

anyone going this year? I'll be there on the 16th, I think.

Capriox's picture

Embodiment

Gah, nooo....!! This year has turned into a terribly busy one for me (goat farming issues & bridesmaid in a big wedding - "life happens"), which is why I hadn't planned a formal third weblit meet-up this summer.

OTOH, y'all don't need me in order to meet-up anyway...!

V's picture

Embodiment

This year our trip to upstate NY is looking to be 7/15-16 for http://www.flwinefest.com/?homepage=true

However, if you do go be sure to have one of the giant turkey legs. Cliched as they are, the ones I've had have also been really good.
