planning on going! I'm not 100% positive I'll be able to make it, but I've been working on plans. This is going to be amazing! Of the comics represented there, I read:

Unshelved, PhD, Girls with Slingshots, Cyanide and Happiness, Least I Could Do, Looking for Group, Octopus Pie, Dr. McNinja, Questionable Content, Something Positive, Dinosaur Comics, Overcompensating, Diesel Sweeties, and Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal.

We could definitely plan to meet up if anyone else is interested (or even if they're not). It's in Easthampton, MA.

I'd need a ride, since I live in Boston with no car. But if someone from the Worcester area is planning on going I can take the commuter rail out there and then hitch a ride. Pretty please?

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

I definitely don't mind giving you (or anyone else) a ride from Worcester. I just need to double check that I can actually make it that weekend and I'll let you know as we get closer.

sarianna's picture

I'm going! ...if only because it's ten minutes away, and I go to Eastworks all the time anyway. Smile Should be fun. If anyone wants to meet up, I'd love to!

Danielle Corsetto, Brad Guigar, Scott Kurtz, Kris Straub, David Willis. All that's missing is GD and MLM.

Oh ya, and me. I'm not able to go half way across the country for the party. Damn.

kawaiikune's picture

is GD? The rest of those I'm familiar with, but I've never heard of that.

Greg Dean. Paul Taylor would be nice too but he's saving up for a diffrent trip.

Okay, as if Jeph Jacques, Randy Milholland, Jorge Cham, Rene Engstrom, David Malki!, and Zach Weiner weren't enough- Mookie. Mookie is on the other list, but it says he is also coming. I've been reading Mookie and Randy Milholland since literally middle school. Holy cow. And I had no idea that this was happening! And it's only an hour and thirty-seven minutes from where I live! I'm going, damn it all. Probably Saturday night/Sunday, since I have work/rehearsals on weekend, but I will find a way.

Thanks for the heads up, V! I hope you come and we meet up with other MLM readers!

The Which's picture

Embodiment

I am sooo jealous of all of you going. I went so far as to look up mapquest directions, but I simply cannot do a 14 hour drive, and I have no money for a hotel... oh yeah, and what would I do with my toddler?

I want to go so badly it might be worth it to see if my parents could watch her for a weekend.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

would you be driving from?

The Which's picture

Indiana. The Crossroads of America! Sad

The Which's picture

Embodiment

It's not going to happen, but I found round trip tickets for less than $300. Bleh. Stupid responsibilities.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

Is it just the toddler? I'm betting finding a place to stay won't be hard...is there anything else you would need to get out here?

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

I'm in! So, applejax, you're more than welcome to catch a ride with me. Are you interested in Friday night? I was thinking about heading out there on Friday for the pubcrawl, seeing if I can scrounge up some place to stay, and then sticking around all day on Saturday. I'm not positive that I'll be around for Sunday, but we'll see. I might come back to Worcester to crash, and go back out? Sunday is only noon to five, though, so I'm not sure it will be worth it. Do you have any thoughts on the subject?

Of the people who are going, what are you planning on doing? Do we want to figure out how we're going to find each other? Are most of you going to the pub crawl on Friday, or are you just going to be there on Saturday? Once we get all that info, we can figure out how to meet up.

applejax's picture

Supplicant

In theory, Friday would be easier as far as the trains go, but sadly I'm not 21 yet Sad So I don't know if I'd be able to tag along and not drink or if I wouldn't get in at all. The rest of the weekend is really up to you if you're willing to cart me around Smile The trains run pretty much every few hours getting back into Boston, so I'm fairly flexible.

BCT's picture

Devotee

I can't participate in the pub crawl, and I'm busy Sunday, but the meet at Eastworks looks incredible. I'm not exactly sure where Worcester is (I pronounce it Warchester, which goes to show just how much I'm from the west coast), but if I can make it out there, may I join you guys?

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

I would love to meet up with you on Saturday, and I'm sure everyone else who's going would too. Maybe that's the best plan...to have lunch or dinner together or something.

V's picture

Embodiment

If people don't want to do the pub crawl, dinner or some sort of massive tea tasting (idea elsewhere) might work.

Amiable Hummingbird's picture

Devotee

I was seriously considering it, and I would go if I was home. But I'll be at school then, and the ride is quite a bit longer- an extra 4 hours that I don't have to spend on driving. Maybe next time it won't be such a crazy weekend for me.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

This looks like total fun, massive win, whatever you crazy kids say these days. And I don't fly. Smile

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

Amtrak tickets would cost about $400 for a round trip, but you would have to sit in a train for 3 days out and 3 days back. Blum 3

MeiLin's picture

Most High

I LOVE Amtrak, but I don't have the extra $$ for a sleeper, and baby, that's the way to go. I can't think of anything more fun than watching the countryside zizz by and writing.

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

But then, you'd have to post your route and probably have to stop to visit a couple times on the way.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

Not till after the books are edited. Then maybe I'll do a "whistle stop tour"--buy an Amtrak pass and just go up and down the coast or something. That would actually be fun. I'd have to wait until there were actually more than 1 or 2 fans at each stop, though... Wink

V's picture

Embodiment

Just for fun, I went mucking about on Amtrak's site and looked up Portland OR -> Chicago, Chicago -> NY, NY -> New Orleans, and New Orleans -> Portland on the 4-city thinger. It wound up $737 before making any of those sleeper arrangements, and assuming a 10% AAA discount. That's a ballpark price, at least. If you ever foresee the chance to break away for a few weeks, you might be able to make a conditional fundraiser...accept pledges towards the trip, then book it if we cover the minimum you'd need us to chip in.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

That would be hilarious. I'm hoping to take the train down to a con/cons in CA, or up to Seattle at the least this year. Cons are tax deductible! how cool is that!

V's picture

Embodiment

Seriously--do a big poll figuring out what month is best for everyone, wait until everyone has ordered their 3-book boxed set of the opening trilogy, then do a grand tour with mini gatherings in 4 or 5 spots Smile You could also steer back through the southwest, but the trip planner thing only had 4 links and I didn't look harder.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

As I said, I love trains and train travel. We'll see. If I live long enough to write this ding dang thing, and I feel good when I'm done, I'll do it.

kawaiikune's picture

*definitely* do that. I bet a lot of us would chip in and/or host and feed you while you're out here, too.

MeiLin's picture

You're MUCH more likely to meet me in person than the east coasters, given my aversion to planes. Smile

V's picture

Embodiment

Looks like the idea has some support! I haven't committed to specifics yet, but it's high on my "to do" list for Saturday at a minimum (meetup?) and possibly the overnight. It's only 1:45 away.

The Which's picture

Embodiment

The more research I do, the more it looks like I can make this happen. What are people planning to do for lodging? I'd be willing to share a room to cut back on costs. Hell, I'd be willing to split a room 5 ways, and I'll sleep on the floor Wink

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

I have an air mattress I can bring. We would just have to pick some place that's big enough that they wouldn't notice a bunch of people sneaking in. They generally discourage that.

V's picture

Embodiment

The GSA per diem rates for Northampton are $91/night, so it should be possible to find a decent room for about a hundred bucks if anyone has a government ID. And yeah--as long as it's big enough there's always a side door that opens for a keycard, so if it's booked for 2 adults in a double double sized room (vs single king) then it should be pretty straightforward. I'm tempted to get a place for the pub crawl, but I could also do Sat. night.

The Which's picture

Embodiment

I was hoping to do the pub crawl also, but I'm planning on following the crowd on this one, since I dont actually "know" anyone who will be there.

I think I might have better luck stalking some of my favorite artists if they've been drinking Wink

Oh, and for those under 21, they do have a couple of all ages venues listed on the crawl.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

That shouldn't be too bad at all. I'm coming with three people (me, a friend, and my boyfriend), and I have an air mattress that can fit two of us. I might also have another one, but it requires an inflater. I'll work on that. We may end up having to get two rooms, based on the sheer number of people going, but we'll see. Does anyone else have air mattresses or anything? Does anyone have a military ID? V, do you think a USAA card would do it, or would it have to be an actual military ID?

V's picture

Embodiment

and if they even check. Whenever I travel for business I ask for the rate, even tho I technically work for a gov. contractor, and I've never once been asked to show an ID on arrival--but then, showing up in the middle of the week in business casual with 3 guys looks different than showing up for Friday night with a boisterous bunch, so they might be pickier then. Just ask on the phone.

Shinjinarenai's picture

Postulant

I will definitely be asking off from work and going, as will my roomie and boyfriend, and possibly my brother. My main problem is that I know that I have theater until 5pm Saturday, and according to Google Maps Eastworks is 1hr37min away. I really want to meet up with everyone, though! If we do a meetup Saturday night, I think we could probably make it. Then the only thing to figure out would be Saturday night. It might be cheaper for me to just drive home that night and come back Sunday morning, and my friends might like that better, so I think that's what I'll do. So, if anyone doesn't mind a bit of a drive, I have an air mattress that you are welcome to crash on Saturday night after some kind of meetup/dinner/thingy. Smile

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

we want to do dinner in Northhampton on Saturday night. The thing gets out at 8, so maybe a late dinner would be good? Northhampton is close by and full of awesome food places, and I'm sure we could spend a lot of time wandering around looking at stuff.

sarianna's picture

Devotee

This idea is excellent. Particularly if y'all have never been to Faces, or Gaymarket (er, excuse me, Haymarket), etc etc. It's a fabulous area. Does anyone have any food allergies or sensitivities? I live in Amherst so I'm rather familiar with the restaurants in the area, particularly after living with a gluten-sensitive vegan. Smile

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

I was thinking of the Haymarket, or maybe that pasta place, Viva, I think? They make all of their pasta fresh, as well as their sauces, and it's amazing. I'm definitely open to suggestions, and the Haymarket might be best for a big group. Isn't there also a really great Japanese food place out that way? I'm glad we'll have a native with us, because, while I've been a few times and know a few places, I'm not as familiar with Northampton as I would be if I had lived there.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

Should I pungle up some badges or something so you can recognize each other, or flyers you can pass out to people, or...?

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

Yes, we should totally do something like that. I was thinking about getting a Lover's Temple t-shirt or something so as to be easily recognized. I figure only people on here would recognize it, and if anyone asks, it's good advertising.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

There are badges at Cafepress, too. I am retiring that design, soon, so if you want 'em go get 'em. I just don't know if you'd have them in time. (When is it again? Mid-March? yes, that's probably enough time. brain fog...)

V's picture

Embodiment

Seriously. If you made a sheet of business cards with the MLM title, logo, site, and a catch phrase--ideally formatted them into the size that the preprinted stock uses, that would be fantastic and would make nice handouts.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

I actually have a really nice business card; those of you I've done BPAL transactions with have seen it.

Or, you know, secret handshake.

V's picture

Embodiment

I'll admit to mild disappointment now that the attendee list no longer reads "V and a whole bunch of friendly women in their 20s". That would have attracted some attention to the group, I'm sure }:) Either way--it'll be good to follow up "Hey, so what's all the Lover's Temple stuff?" with a "Here, take this! Awesome story yadda yadda..."

TheBoy's picture

Embodiment

idunno about you, V...
but MY secret handshake--it's all ABOUT spreading the love, if you know what I'm sayin'. Wink

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

I'm thinking that only starts with a hand shake before devolving into groping...

TheBoy's picture

Embodiment

if you expected mere -groping- from my secret handshake... }:)

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Embodiment

I expect there to be something like, handshake, embrace, groping, accosting, and so on so that if allowed to continue long enough, there will start to be cloths shed.

TheBoy's picture

Embodiment

Nah, no subtlety like that. Honk each boob twice, twist the nipples, check for lubrication, and go.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

That's been *my* secret handshake for years! Blum 3

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

"Well! Thank you!" Temmin answered.
"And do you remember how we say thank you?" she said slyly, switching places with Issak and putting a hand on Temmin's chest.

It's the same way we say "hello!" as well as "goodbye!" and "hey, there's this really awesome story online you should read!".

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

You know...you could make up a whole bunch of business cards with the URL and a slot to write your referral number. That way, we could spread the word and keep track of people that we talk to about it a little bit better.

V's picture

Embodiment

I had another crazy idea. MeiLin, do you have access to a computer with a webcam? o.O

We're going to have enough geeks in a small area that I bet we could arrange for one to bring a laptop with a cam and find a hotspot...you could join us for a brief telecon Biggrin

TheBoy's picture

NorthwoodsMan's picture

I'm feeling you on that one, nice ass BTW. Biggrin

If you do set up the webcam thing, is it possible to post the IP so the rest of us can join in? Maybe set up a comment board along with it.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

As it happens, Companion (my laptop) does indeed have a webcam. I would love that! I'm working on some graphics for you guys to print out. Just finished an 8-up that you should be able to print out and pin on

Gudy's picture

... I kinda feel that naming a laptop Companion is inappropriate.

Clearly, the only computer that can possibly bear that name is a G4 Cube.

MeiLin's picture

kawaiikune's picture

Gudy's picture

Embodiment

... that to be so, yes, with MeiLin being as much of a Browncoat as she is.

But it does seem like she hasn't played a lot of Portal... Sad

V's picture

Embodiment

I actually don't own either a laptop or a webcam. So, people who are planning to attend, do you
1) Own a laptop and a webcam?
2) Own
2a) A laptop?
2b) A webcam?

I'm thinking that we should get this stuff figured out and ideally, dry-run it with MeiLin beforehand so we don't get bitten by technical difficulties. As for a time...well, either Friday night in the hotel with free wireless for anyone doing the pub crawl, or Saturday during or after dinner, which seems to be the current "official" meetup. Frankly, I think any MLMish types are probably going to be meeting up and hanging out as long as we're all there.

Shinjinarenai's picture

Postulant

I have a laptop with webcam, but the damn webcam is very, very temperamental. I've been considering getting a decent one so I can try video-calling my host family in Japan, though, so if no one else has one I'm willing to make my investment in time to bring it to the meetup.

Mei, I think skype might be the program to use. It's very user-friendly, and really walks you through everything. I could be wrong, though, and if anyone else has suggestions, let me know.

V's picture

Embodiment

I've also heard good things about iChat-to-iChat, or the iChat-to-AIM connection if you're a PC.

http://ask.metafilter.com/103918/How-to-record-webcam-video-in-OS-X-wo-i... could be useful too--there's a $10 prog and a freebie.

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Don't suppose any of those allow others to log in and chat as well?

manoki's picture

Shameless plug: I think Skype only allows two users at a time. ooVoo, a company my brother works for, allows multiple users at once, so it could be a huge teleconference across the country/world if we all coordinate.

You can download ooVoo for free at ooVoo.com

I have a webcam built in to my Mac, although it's never been very good at video chatting with a PC - it's worked for me maybe twice in all the times I've tried it.

Also - yay my first badge!!

V's picture

Embodiment

I'm pretty sure MeiLin has a Mac too, and Mac-Mac works wonderfully. So yeah--your homework assignment is to PM contact information back and forth with MeiLin and figure out a good time to test it briefly. If we want a backup plan, then kawaiikune too..you guys can figure out the specifics of programs. I've heard iChat -> iChat is solid, and iChat -> AIM pretty good, so since I know kawaiikune has AIM that might be the way to go. Congrats on the badge!

Do you have a car? Are you interested in the Webcomic Weekend? Would you be willing to drive a few people? My car is at capacity right now, and I was hoping that a few more people on here who need rides would be able to come and meet up with us and check out the Weekend. Feel free to PM me or post here if you're able to help facilitate that. Thank you in advance!

Shinjinarenai's picture

I will be driving in for Saturday night, retiring to my dorm later, and coming back with three people Sunday. I can help drive people around Saturday night, no problem, as soon as I can get there, but I'm afraid that three people mostly fills up my little car. We could probably squeeze another in for Sunday driving, if anyone wanted.

V's picture

Embodiment

Friday evening we'll be departing from SE Connecticut with 3 seats available. Let me know what works best, but I can pick people up from the train station in New London, Hartford, or Springfield. New Haven, even, if it'll save you a bunch of money. If kawaiikune is still swamped, I could also detour up to Worcester and take on people there, too. If you're not driving, check bus and train fares and figure out what's easiest--we'll make it work somehow.

MeiLin's picture

Most High

And how many are going for specifically for the MLM meetup and how many are going more for WCW? I'm a little agog at this...

Also you should know I've never webcammed in my life and someone's going to have to walk me through it. And get off my lawn.

kawaiikune's picture

We had talked about WCW previously around here and I was seriously considering it, but I wasn't set on going until I realized that I would have the opportunity to meet up with all of these awesome people. Smile I am now way more excited about it than I would have been if it was just the webcomics.

The Which's picture

Well I -might- have gone anyway...let's say a 30% chance. The rest is pure MLMy goodness Biggrin I posted it as a nice central location and it seems to have succeeded. Shinjinarenai's picture

I was excited about the webcomics weekend, but I'm practically jumping out of my socks at the thought of meeting some of my lovely fellow fans. I'm going Saturday night specifically for the meetup. Smile

The Which's picture

Embodiment

Just an FYI, greyhound has several busses in and out of Northampton, MA. This seems to be where all the area hotels are, too. Clarion hotel I found online for $89/night, and it's only a mile from the bus station.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

linking that? The hotel that is. In general, if anyone else has a hotel recommendation or thoughts or anything, post links so we can all see what we're potentially getting ourselves into. Thanks for looking into it Smile

The Which's picture

Embodiment

I can't find where I found that price... maybe it was a very short offer. I love doing this kind of research though, so sometime tonight I'll come up with a list of hotels, prices, distances from the bars and the main event, etc.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

Thank you! I usually use Hotels.com, because they have good reviews of different hotels, including, pricing, how clean they are (really the only thing I usually care about), and distance from various places, but if you have a system, do whatever works for you. Thanks again for looking into that. Smile

The Which's picture

Embodiment

I used Hotels.com, and mapquested distances from the events Smile

Our cheapest option is the Econolodge in Hadley ($80.99/night at hotels.com). It's 5 miles from the down town bars and 9 miles from the Eastworks building. (OK, the Howard Johnson is cheaper, but it got several reviews saying it was dirty. Ick)

The closest option is Quality Inn Northampton ($99.00) which is less than a mile from downtown (no designated driver needed!) and 4.5 miled from Eastworks. It also got slightly better guest ratings.

Do we know how many people it will be for sure? I think an extra person or two could probably sneak in, but if it's more than that total, we might need 2 rooms.

V's picture

Embodiment

I'm not tracking a guest list but I recall Shin bringing 2 or 3 others, so it'll get a bit crowded. Some people also might want gender-specific rooms, or just to get their own. Personally I'm not too picky.

Shinjinarenai's picture

Postulant

I think my peoples will not want to stay overnight. We're all pretty much homebodies, and they just wanted to go Sunday to the Comics gathering as a day trip, so I think I've decided to just drive to and from Albany a few more times. I'll doublecheck with them, though, and get back to you soon on that.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

two guys, applejax, and me. I don't think the guys care, and I know I don't care, about gender specificness of rooms.

The Which's picture

Embodiment

I don't care at all about who is in the room, though I think I'd prefer not to share a bed with a guy.

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

I think that's definitely totally understandable. IIII'm bringing a boy of my own, so I may snuggle him, but I don't think anyone would expect cross-gender bed sharing at all.

Yeah, I'm sticking with no "cross-gender bed sharing"

V's picture

Embodiment

I haven't heard from my gf yet if she's interested in this and we haven't negotiated the appropriate boundaries, but even if she doesn't come along bed sharing would probably be on the fringes of my permissions. I realize my dreams of turning the room into a full-on LT orgy are extremely remote.

I'm about nine hours from where the meet-up is, so I thought about trying to make it, but I really need to spend all of March catching up on the piles of work & projects that didn't get done because I spent all of February catching babies (28 kids born between 2/2 and 2/26!). Sorry Sad

Explain to them just how many rabid, raving, dedicated IHotGK supporters are going to be there. I've mentioned the story and site to my gf at least a half dozen times, I'm sure, but only after I hooked her into coming to the con with me did she decide, on her own, to read through the story so she wouldn't feel totally out of place. Methinks she'll make an account when she finally gets caught up Smile

Speaking of which, how did the meet and greet go?

V's picture

Embodiment

It's March 20-22 Smile This weekend was the Arrogant Worms concert, which was well worth the price of admission even with one member (Chris) down on paternity leave--they had a fill-in who did quite well, all things considered. The venue was a small auditorium of a church which barely fit 300 people, and the audience was primarily 50+ or 16-, but still...Arrogant Worms Biggrin It was a good time. They weave a comedy skit through their performance--it's not just songs.

NorthwoodsMan's picture

Would have probably gotten that no matter what weekend it was. Everything for the last two weeks has revolved around planning the first BD party for my oldest. But now it's over and I can try and think straight again.

Maybe.

V's picture

Embodiment

So I talked to my gf, and yes, she wants to go Biggrin And the deal was--we get our own room if I want more than snuggling. So naturally, I'm planning to book a room. That means it can also serve as the overflow room--we certainly aren't going to be turning people out into the hall if things really fill up. We're also thinking of staying both nights...pub crawl to con is an obvious one, but getting out of the con late and possibly having a late dinner/meet it'll be nice to have a guaranteed place to crash. I'd suggest that we move soon since the lower-priced hotels may fill up quickly. I'm planning to reserve 1 room for 2 nights. The Quality Inn looks good to me...the rates for 2 people for a double-queen room with AAA membership is $89.XX/night.

--Is anyone else willing to reserve the other room, and then all the sharing and stuff can be figure out later? If you are, post that here. Then, PM me with your RL name or I'll PM you with mine and we'll see if we can reserve 2 adjacent rooms (ideally the kind with the door that opens in the middle--I love those!). If anyone else wants private rooms or whatever, also let me know and we'll just try to expand the block.

The Which's picture

Embodiment

I don't think I can reserve a room on my credit card; if something happened I couldn't afford ~$200. I'm spending $250 just to get there! Plus, I'm a server--I pay for nearly everything in cash.

I am really looking forward to this. Tickets are purchased, babysitters are arranged... It should be a good time.

Well, it looks like I am too ADHD to manage my life. I wont be going. My $222 plane ticket will cost me another $200 to transfer to the next weeked. I dont have it. I was flying into Providence b/c it was the cheapest flight I could find... luckily I have family friends there. So, a vacation will happen, if, unfortunately, not the one I had hoped for.

I am positively shaking with self-rage. I had to take a xanax just to stop my heart from exploding. Tomorrow I'm going to schedule an appointment with a psychiatrist to get a new perscription for welbutrin (which is only licenced as an antidepressant, but it is the most effective ADD drug I've ever taken)

I don't know how it is possible for one person to be so... so... AAAGH. I get it from my father. He once forgot to tell his boss he was taking a vacation. Everyone else knew but the one person who needed to know. When he came back, two weeks later, he was unemployed. Somehow he ended up with a PhD in physical chemistry, but he can't keep track of daily life. I hate finding out how like him I really am.

Sorry for the length of this, I am just so upset with myself I can't stand it. This is almost as bad as the time I missed a final exam because the date that was listed on the syllabus had been changed and I never wrote down the change (even though the prof mentioned it almost every day in the weeks before the exam)

V's picture

Yeah--13-14-15 I could do. There's also a few other MLMites in the woodwork in that area who might be able to pop out, too. Also consider getting stubborn about the ticket. I know airlines love to make their money on change costs and cancellations, but seriously--it's 2 weeks out and we're talking about 90% of the ticket price. Get on the phone and refuse to get off--just ask to talk to managers, other branches, etc, whatever. Sometimes just patiently repeating your situation and the fees to people over and over and over can get things changed or waived.

"I'm sorry ma'am, this ticket is YY class, I can't do that"
"Alright, can you please transfer me to someone who can?"
"I don't think that'll be possible."
"Alright, how bout your supervisor? Yes, I'll hold"

Shinjinarenai's picture

Postulant

Just get on the phone, and don't stop talking until you have different tickets. And if not, we'll figure something out. *hug* That sucks so hard, but you'll figure something out. I dated someone with severe ADHD, but he managed just fine. He's going to be a restaurant manager! The only annoying bit was that he rarely could stay still and snuggle after sex- he'd go paint some miniatures and then check his email in the other room and then come back and sort some cards and then turn the TV on and watch some cartoons... got him all hyped up. Blum 3

On a side note, I requested off from work yesterday for that weekend. Imagine my horror to find that that Sunday, both request slots were filled up! But my manager thought about it, and is letting me have off anyway. She thinks me meeting you all sounds like so much fun. I have the best job EVAR. Crisis averted!

We actually had commitments from 8 people for yesterday but there were a few last-minute issues. Points of interest like comic conventions might work well since they're another reason to travel and the organizers provide hotel information, but you could just as easily do it for dinner some evening like we did last night. I suspect that MeiLin would be willing to do more video chats if people are meeting up in 3s or 4s to share the IHOTGK love. There's a whole subforum devoted to this, actually. I'm looking at booking hotel rooms, because I'm betting they will fill up fast. If you are planning on staying in Northampton, please let me know which night and how many people you will have with you. If you plan to bring an air mattress or other sleeping implement, let me know how many people can fit on it. Rooms will be $89/night divided among however many people are going to be staying in it. I'm bringing at least 2 other people (besides me), so it's unlikely that it will be much more than $20/night even if you're the only person that stays with us. If you think that is more than you can afford for whatever reason, but you still need a place to stay, PM me. If you don't want to commit at this very moment because you're not 100% sure you're coming, let me know anyway, and indicate how likely it is you can make it, so that we can decide whether or not I need to book an additional room. If you guys can put that info in a reply to this comment (and keep hijacking to a minimum) so that this stays somewhat organized, then we can get this taken care of as soon as possible. I want to make sure that everyone who needs it has a place to stay that is inexpensive as possible. Thank you!

I am bringing: Me (female) + 2 friends (male) = 3
I have: 1 air mattress that sleeps => 2
I will be there: Friday and Saturday night

I reserved two adjacent hotel rooms, non-smoking, with 2 queen beds in each, at the Quality Inn in Northampton. For both nights, the rooms are 195.49 apiece ($89/night + tax). So far we have V and V's Girl in one room, and Applejax, 2 of my friends, and me in the other. I can bring an air mattress, so we have room for 2 more in my room, and I'm sure if more want to stay with us, we can work something out. I even have an extra air mattress, but it needs it's own pump which I don't have (but I'm sure I could get one)

V, if you get there before I do, you can just tell them that the rooms have been reserved in my name and one of them is for you. If you want to check in without me, you need your own AAA card. Otherwise, I can use mine and you can just write me a check for the room or something.

Are you serious?! ZOMG, you guys, I had no idea! I think someone here has a line to Jeph; could they ping him or someone who knows what's going on with that?

V's picture

Embodiment

I think this thing has been rapidly growing beyond their expectations. Someone imagined it as a few artists chit-chatting and maybe couple fans, free, and since then it's just gotten bigger and bigger. Jeph only announced that other registration form on Thursday and it made no mention of a cutoff date...I suspect that this is a "fire codes and security" kind of limit that they've hit.

I'm sure they're all working frantically to get it sorted out. Get everyone on the waiting list as soon as you can, for sure.

The meetup will definitely happen, one way or the other. Pub crawl needs no registration and we were planning to hang out for dinner somewhere not the con, anyway. Worst case we have to play tourist on our own all day.

The Which's picture

Stupid WCW, who needs it anyway?

I cant believe this registering thing. I just got a facebook message asking me to register on Thursday (I forgot to change my RSVP to "not attending")! And they closed it TODAY? Seems unfair to only give a two day window!

V's picture

Embodiment

The most critical resource appears to be parking...luckily, we've got some built-in carpooling plus a local like Sarianna who might be able to find some off-Eastworks parking within walking distance. I got this in promising email from one of the organizers:

THAT DAMN REGISTRATION WAITING LIST

Due, once again, to overwhelming response, registration for this event has been CLOSED since Friday evening. Which means, if your friends registered late, they are on a waiting list. I realize some of you are concerned about this, so here's the deal:

As it stands, parking is the big issue. Crowds are an issue as well, but we have a *little* bit of wiggle room. So, if you've made plans to travel with a friend who's on the waiting list, you MAY bring them as your Very Special Guest.

Basically I am asking you, as an act of good faith, to pledge that if you bring a friend who missed out, you do NOT bring an extra car. We simply can't have any more cars. (and believe me, we've been working on making space since Friday!)

So, simply put: Yes, your friend who you're traveling with can come. As long as they bum a ride from you, or the other way around. Just make sure they're registered! And that they buy you a beer for saving their butts.

They're trying to get a handle on how many cars will show up at Eastworks for comparison to their available parking. That means leaving your car at the hotel and carpooling doesn't count. I listed myself as hauling 5. If one other person from the MLM crowd wants to do the same, maaaybe 2, that will probably cover us. If you do, let us know so we don't over-account Smile Form is here.

V's picture

Embodiment

I figured if someone else didn't do it, in the next day or two I would make a big PM sharing my cell # with people I thought would be attending and encourage everyone else to do the same. I expect that when people arrive they'll be able to call someone who's been around and get a good idea of where various MLM groups are.

Preliminary list: V, scrapper, applejax, kawaiikune, sarianna, Shinjinarenai, magalicious (probably), Vil-hatarn (maybe), BCT (maaaybe), MeiLin (in spirit)
If you plan to come, want to share contact info, and aren't on that list, post here or PM me!

Scrapper and I plan to get there Friday night for the pub crawl and stay until Sunday. I made WCW registration on Saturday and should be able to get Scrapper through the door. kawaiikune and applejax booked the hotel 2 nights but I don't know their registration status. Magalicious may be there Friday or Saturday but definitely didn't register. Sarianna lives nearby and could probably show up whenever.

I've kinda expected that all the MLM folks will get together for dinner on Saturday. Anything else may depend on what people are doing. It would be nice to have some under-21s there on Friday to keep applejax company...I still think "massive tea tasting" could be a decent substitute to the pub crawl. Webcamming with MeiLin hasn't been scheduled yet but I was thinking it would probably work best Saturday night...remember we have a 3 hour time difference so it can't really be "too late". I expect that people who didn't make registration on Saturday will walk around downtown or find other things to do.

If people wanted to get into WCW itself I suggest filling out the "waiting list" form even if it says it's closed. Some people from the list got in on Sunday and I don't know if that day is full or not.

applejax's picture

Supplicant

and anyone else who isn't should be able to get in as long as they share cars with us, as I believe the big problem was parking space.

If I'm the only under-21 then maybe a big tea tasting and then drinking somewhere other than a pub/bar? It really would be awful if I was left all by my lonesome Sad

kawaiikune's picture

Embodiment

We're not just going to ditch you by yourself in Northampton! There are three places on the pub crawl list that allow people who are under 21 in, so at the very least we can be there, and it sounds like this is a very disorganized sort of thing where we can just pick a location and go be there. Does anyone know how we would get WCW stickers? We can also move the drinking back to the hotel room, especially if there are a lot of us and places are crowded.

In other news, I'm registered, and my car is registered carrying 5. The hotel is close to the place, so if other people are staying there or want to meet us there, I don't mind making a couple of trips to drop people off. Make sure you get on the waiting list!

Hey, so, does anyone have any thoughts on food?

I made a backup reservation for 8:30 on Friday night at Viva Fresh Pasta in Northampton because I've been there and I loved it, and I'm worried that we will have trouble sitting together anywhere in a mobbed Northampton (and I thought it'd be cool to have a chance to sit down and hang out with you guys for a little while outside of a loud crowded bar or whatever). Reservations are easy to cancel, though, so if anyone has objections or other suggestions, let me know...it just seemed like a good idea to have a reservation somewhere just in case. Thoughts?

ETA: Also, is anyone interested in dinner in Worcester on Sunday night? There is this crazy awesome Brazilian BBQ place that pretty much only serves meat, and has the best BBQ sauce I've ever had, as well as a penchant for wrapping everything in bacon. They charge by the pound, which also keeps it inexpensive, even if you want your whole dinner to consist of usually-expensive steak wrapped in bacon. It's also BYOB and is across the street from a cheep liquor store.
