Clare Dragonfly's Points Story: Lifetime Pass
From the top of the highest hill outside of Hawkfield, it was easy to see the Travelers coming from a long way off; even before he could see the colors of the brightly painted caravans, the tow-headed boy atop the garrison wall could see the cloud of dust they stirred up from the road into the town below. He ran down the steps carved into the wall and into the courtyard to find the commander, his bare feet slapping against the tiles.
“Da! Da!” he piped. “Da, the Travelers are coming! Da!” He skidded to a stop outside his father’s office. “Da, may we go see ‘em? Please?”
The commander frowned. “And why would I want to go see the Travelers, then, eh? Bunch of dirty thieves--I’ll need to send some troops into town, I s’pose, to keep an eye on ‘em.”
“Well,” said the boy, biting his lip, “I was thinkin’, maybe Mellit was with this band. She wasn’t with the last band, but maybe she’s with this one.”
The commander’s frown deepened. “Mellit? I don’t know anyone named Mellit. No one alive, anyway.”
“Oh, Da,” said the boy. “Don’t say that, please don’t say that.”
“Your sister left us, Raffik, so as far as I’m concerned, she’s dead.” The commander sighed and rubbed his face. “But if you want to go see the Travelers, I won’t stop you. You don’t go inside one of those caravans, though, you hear me? You don’t go with one of them anywhere other people can’t see you. None of them, d’you understand?”
“I won’t, Da, I promise I won’t,” said the boy eagerly. “So may I go?”
The commander nodded slowly. “Yes, I s’pose you might.” He rummaged through his pockets until he found his coin pouch. He gestured the boy over. “Here,” he said, putting the pouch in the boy’s hand. “Take what you need from this. What--what anyone needs. If there’s a particular someone there you know who might need something...” he trailed off.
Raffik nodded. “All right, Da, I understand.” He turned and ran out the door.
“But Raff! Don’t spend all of it!” his father yelled after him.
Raffik ran all the way down the garrison hill into town, pulling up gasping near the gawking crowd in the square. Four Travelers were set up in front of the caravans--a fiddler, a drummer, a piper and a guitarist. The music was sprightly and the townsfolk clapped along until a tall, rusty-haired Traveler stood up on top of one of the caravans and began his spiel, the music dropping low so that people could hear him. Raffik pushed his way to the front to get a good look.
“Ladies and gentlemen, good folk of Hawkfield!” boomed the handsome man on the caravan roof. “We are a wandering troupe of performers of all arts, arcane and otherwise! The arts of music!” Here the little band played loud, and the piper blew an elaborate flourish. “The art of divination!” A nearly toothless old crone appeared, intricately flourishing a deck of cards in her bony fingers. “The art of comedy!” Two clowns appeared in tattered clothes; the crowd howled with laughter as they beat each other. “And! The art of dance!”
Three beautiful girls wreathed in scarves danced into the circle, their bellies bare, long skirts swirling around their legs. Bells and bracelets jingled as they stepped, hips swaying; the men in the crowd hooted and whistled, and the girls gyrated in response. Raffik watched them as they whirled; was one of them Mellit? He couldn’t tell. It had been almost two years since she’d left with a Traveler band. But when they stopped spinning, one of them caught his eyes and winked, and he realized it was his sister.
“We’ll be setting up camp in the commons just outside of town, come see us! Come for your fortune, to change your luck, come for a charm, come for a--” The musicians set up a loud squeal while the girls shimmied their breasts, and the crowd roared with laughter. “Come to watch us dance and sing, just as we have before the king! Just come, come, and watch us play, we won’t be back for many a day!” The crowd burst into applause, the musicians came to an end with a flourish, and the dancing girls held up their skirts to catch the coppers the people threw.
Mellit threw a scarf over her little brother and danced him over to one of the caravans, handed him up to the driver’s box and climbed on next to him. “Where we goin’, Melly?” said Raffik.
“Just over to the commons, Raff, no further,” she cried gaily and set the horses on their way behind the other wagons. “How are you?”
Raffik scratched his ear. “Well, I’m fine, I s’pose. I miss you awful, Melly.”
“Oh, sweetheart, I miss you too,” said Mellit. “I’m surprised Da let you come.”
“He told me not to do just what I’m doin’, though,” said Raffik nervously. “He misses you something awful too, Melly, though he won’t say so.”
Mellit’s face darkened. “I wish things could’ve been different, but I wasn’t going to give my baby to the Mother’s House, Raff.”
“Where is he?”
Mellit’s face brightened again. “He’s inside the caravan. The Queen’s looking after him. He’s going to be two in a couple of spokes. I named him Tebbanik--after Da. We call him Tebs.” She blushed a little.
“You have a queen in there?!” said Raffik, swiveling to stare back at the caravan.
“Our queen,” laughed Mellit. “She’s our leader.”
“I thought the red-headed fella was your leader.”
“That’s her son, Connin,” she said. “Stay out of his way, Raff.”
“Why? Isn’t he a nice fella?”
“He’s a tricky one, he is,” Mellit said, shaking her head. “When I first joined the Travelers...well, you’re a little boy, still, Raff, you don’t need to hear such things.” The caravans pulled into the commons and formed up into a circle; Mellit jumped down from the driver’s box and handed Raffik down. “Now, little brother, I want you to come see me whenever you can. We’ll only be here a week and then we’re going to move on to another town, but--”
“Well, now,” said a friendly voice. “And who’s this, then, Melly?” Raffik looked up; it was the one Mellit had called Connin.
“This is my little brother, Raffik,” said Mellit carefully. “Raffik, this is Connin.”
“And did you bring your sister a little something, young Raffik?” said Connin. In his hand was Da’s coin purse. How had he gotten it? thought Raffik. He began to reach for it, but Mellit put down a restraining hand. “Never worry, boy, I won’t take it all,” said Connin, casually digging through the purse. He pulled out three gold coins and a copper; two of the golds went into his pocket and the third gold he tossed to Mellit. He handed the purse back to Raffik. “Now you’ve paid your way for the rest of your life, boy.”
Connin took the copper between his nimble fingers and pressed it between his thumb and his forefinger. He passed his other hand over it and mumbled something. He dug a thin leather thong from his waist pouch and threaded the copper onto it; how had he put a hole in it? thought Raffik. Connin put the talisman around his neck. The boy looked at it; instead of the familiar three mountains on one side and portrait of Temmin the Great on the other, the copper now bore an eight-spoked wheel on one side and a torch on the other. It looked melted, as if it had been through a fire.
“Any time you need anything from a Traveler,” said Connin, “any time you’re in trouble or just want to come see the show, you show him this. Don’t give it to anyone else, understand? And don’t show it to anyone. It’s our secret, young Raff, all right? Yes? Between you and the Travelers. Now, run along home.” He patted the boy’s head, and put an arm around Mellit’s waist, turning her away from her brother. “And you, Miss Melly, I have very urgent business with you. Go on, son,” said Connin over his shoulder as he walked the girl quickly back toward his caravan.
“It’s all right, Raff, I’ll see you tomorrow, once we’ve set up camp, come back then! I love you!” called Mellit.
Raffik fingered the copper talisman for a moment, then slipped it inside his shirt. He put the coin purse inside his shirt, too--he’d like to see the pickpocket who could get it out from under his arm--and took off for home.

Huh
Connin has this marvelous quality of getting under my skin. He's bugged me for a while now (since the first scene with Sedra), and this does nothing to change it. Using his position of power to set up his own little harem, and extort money like that. He's powerful, that much is obvious. I'd be willing to bet he ends up causing trouble for the sake of his own position, instead of helping, when push comes to shove for Teacher and the Traveler Queen.
Trust everyobody, then cut the cards.

Oddly enough
I kind of like Connin--don't trust him a damn, but I kind of like watching him operate.

it was a fair exchange
Connin likes Mellit, so her little brother is okay by him--and Connin likes kids, too, to a degree. No, not like that, stop it! Don't forget Raffik and his talisman. He may be back.
But is Mellit willing? It
But is Mellit willing? It sure looks like she is being pressured.

for Traveler girls
Having sex with Connin is like cooking and laundry; it's just one of those chores you have to attend to. Connin's good at it, though, so it's not entirely onerous.
sigils...
Does the Traveler Queen work her magic so that none of them will become preganant by him or other "patrons"?

In Connin's case
It'd be more practical to put the magic mark on him.
My guess is that Traveler girls have to make do like any other girls. Judging by Tebs, it looks like illegitimate babies are a little more accepted in the camp.

Revulsion and Dismay
Having sex with him is like a chore all the girls do!? How horrible. I can barely think of it as a sort of duty for a wife, how can it just be that way for all Traveler girls!? ...I guess some girls just couldn't cut it. I pity the Idealist personality type that tries to run away and become a traveler. ;_;
clarification
No one is forced to have sex with Connin. But he spreads himself around to the point where his girls might say "AGAIN?!"

Not all cults are bad, but even well-intentioned cults can be very, very bad, everyone. Get extremely suspicious if you ever find yourself dealing with people who discourage independent critical thought or contact with people outside the group, even if they might be a "dangerous" or "corrupting" influence. As humans there's a lot of psychology we're particularly sensitive to, and it doesn't always cause us to act in our best interest--or others to act in our best interest. Even Alcoholics Anonymous shows cult-like behavior.

While I consider myself a Christian, I find a lot to like in the Wiccan Rede ("An it harm none, do what ye will"). But beyond that, we still have a responsibility to think and decide for ourselves rather than let ourselves be coerced into action by someone else.
Even if Connin isn't forcing anyone, if he's wielding his influence within this isolated group which, as the public leader, is no doubt significant--that covers him in quite a bit of slime, as far as I'm concerned. Sex should never be a chore.
Coercive persuasion is bad, very bad.

he shrugs and finds someone else
Connin is never short of bedwarmers. Mellit didn't go with him because she had to, she went with him because she wanted to.
Mellit's warning to Raffik is more about how Connin treats non-Travelers; he's not violent per se, but he is a trickster and a thief. He's not trustworthy.
But that doesn't mean he's not a hot hunk of talented beefcake in bed.
Could be true :)
Please don't take my post above to assume that I hate Connin or the Travelers. One of your talents is to write real, complex characters and situations and the group does seem to do a lot of good things, like providing an accepting home to an unmarried mother. However, it also shows some signs that concern me, and the way the comment thread was going pushed one of my hot buttons. I recently had to think about a lot of this when one of my good friends on another forum, who reminds me very much of SongCoyote on this one, was strictly limited in their online time by their Dom, who also roundly rejected any sort of friendship or rapport with forum in their initial post and threatened to ban them completely. I had to think hard about how to handle it, and I'm happy to say that things worked out very well, eventually.
Wow! Sarcasm! That's original!
Can anyone remind me right
Can anyone remind me right quick what year the main story is in?

I figure this is shortly after Maeb had the Travelers vacate the King's forest because Connin was a naughty boy with Sedra. Again.
And yeah, I don't particularly like him. I don't trust him at all.
So nice to see how
So nice to see how heartbroken Connin is over having to leave Sedra.

Rogue with a heart of gold?
I agree that as currently presented, Connin is what would have been called a 'Rake' of low standing, but there have been moments when his better nature shines through. Sort of a very low-class Robin Hood demeanor...
relations?
He has as much mystery to his back story as Teacher and Moeb, but not as much responsibility for his actions. The Traveler Queen knows this and is why, I suspect, she packed them up from the Kings Woods when she did.
While I don’t trust him either, it seems that he is no different from the Tremontine Kings in that he is taking advantage of his position to get as much personal enjoyment as he can. So who knows, maybe he is somehow of royal decent.

Connin a royal of Tremont?
Well, his name does end in "-in." Maybe he's a son of Gethin I, or a half-brother or a nephew.

What I want to know is....
the queen keeping a tighter hold on her son? I mean she has to see him for what he is. He seems to have his own best interests at heart.

Connin has his own power
So there's only so much Maeb can do to keep him in line.
Dang..
Connin is hella charismatic. I don't trust him, of course, but he's interesting.
Intriguing
And close enough to what I asked for
I wonder, who else might have one of those talismans? And how might they use it?
Is Connin the father of Mellit's child? It seems like he would be, but then she seems to imply that she didn't know him until after she joined the Travelers, and that she mainly joined them because she was pregnant (presumably by one of them). Then again, maybe he just did some weird magic and that's what's got her freaked out.
I do like Connin very much as a character. Can't stand him as a person, though!

Tebs
Tebs is not Connin's son. We don't know who the father of Melly's child is, but he's a Hawkfield local. She's seen what kind of tricks Connin has up his sleeve, is why she cautioned her brother. You never want to get on Connin's bad side; he has his father's temper, which is worse than his mother's.
Curiosity piqued
His father's temper? I can see it now, fans puzzling over family trees, trying to figure out which members of which family are most temperamental and easily set off, who could have been alive early enough to have fathered Connin, who would share his looks, etc.

Beware, there be speculation here
And of the idle, wild-assed kind, too.
After all, the number of people from that time period that we know of can be counted on one hand. Literally: Maeb, Teacher, Temmin the Great, Gethin I. Given that Temmin the Great violently united the Three Clans to form the Kingdom of Tremont and that MeiLin has already commented elsewhere that he was Not A Nice Guy, my quatloos would be on him.

1 KY...
... according to One Summer in the Foothills, meaning that he probably was conceived in 0 KY, when Temmin the Great may still have been alive. Possibly. *shrugs*
oooh
reeeeeediculous speculation ties his conception to Temmin the Great's death and the creation of Teacher's magic...
or links his conception just to teacher's acquisition of Magic, and links the magic to temmin the great's death?

Hmmm...temperamental, explosive and with a short fuse? Sounds like Creith to me...
and who knows how old Connin really is? It fits, because Milla was a commoner so her son couldn't inherit the throne, and Katha's children were Creith's heirs. Hmmmm!
As far as we know, Connin was
As far as we know, Connin was born in 1 KY like Gudy said. Creith & Milla weren't around until over 600 years later. So unless we've all misread the stories, that rules them out.
I would like to know what happened with Crieth's children, and Milla, and Katha. I wonder if we'll get to see more of them in the books? If not, then there's a bunch of material for bonus questions for several people to ask right there

Raff is adorable and sweet.
Raff is adorable and sweet. The whole of this tale just strikes me as authentic. People hide their feelings, mask themselves, warn their loved ones, trick the outsiders. What one culture considers fair, another thinks a crime.
I'd like to see what Raff does with that coin down the road, though.

Hmm. . .
I grew up with guys like Connin. The girls always loved him even though they knew his reputation and even I couldn't even help having a crush on those guys.
I feel like part of Connin's need and want for Sedra is because he can't have all of her.
I like Raff and Mellit alot. I would love to see how she came to the Travelers someday.
It's hard not to be
It's hard not to be intrigued by Connin while at the same time infuriated by him.
