How many people are taking exams?
I know exams are stressful, no fun, and they call for procrastination. I have been quite busy myself with all things school, but after reading through the recent comments on the bonus stories I am curious. How many readers are taking exams right now (or within a week or so)? I'd like to take a tally and officially wish each and every person who is taking tests/exams the best of luck. I know a large percentage of the readers are students, but exactly how many of us currently reading are taking exams? Own up - I know you are here procrastinating or taking a break from studying
I'll start: I am number 1.
Edit: It amuses me how many people quickly replied to this thread - I see we're all working hard. }:) I would like to reply to a lot of your statements, but at the moment, I have to study for my 3 remaining exams, eep! Anywho, before I go, a few helpful hints I have picked up this semester: 1) Eat some form of turkey about 3 hours before you take your exam (if on a sandwich, preferably use some form of a wheat bread). It will put something in your stomach and it will actually help you think more clearly. In a nutshell, turkey has properties that help your brain function faster and more efficiently and eating 3 hours before ensures that it is being processed in your system by the time you take your final. Also, the wheat products stay in your system longer ensuring that your stomach is not rumbling and distracting you throughout your final. 2) I'm not entirely sure how or why this is true, but peppermints are supposed to help you think better - so grab a candy cane before you walk into your exam. *Both of these courtesy of my human physiology professor* ^___^

You just made me realize this spring marks 10 years since I walked across a college stage to receive a fake piece of paper tied in cheap ribbon! (and I miss it, somehow, somewhy).
It's hard for me to process I'm this "old". I don't feel it in my head. I don't realize it. In 9 days, hubby & I mark 11 years of marriage, and I sure don't see myself as over about 26!!

I worship at the alter of coffee and cheesits
I will have officially been awake for 2 days in a row in three more hours, if I make it. Yesterday I had a painting final, which was a few feet larger on every side than I’m used too, as well as an artists statement (like an essay). Then today I had five essays due (4 research papers and a personal analysis of cultural concepts—which means BS the whole thing, it’s ok!), only two of which I’d finished, and one that I’d started a week ago, as well as a class presentation and a compiled portfolio of all my writing this semester. I’m so glad I dropped anatomy earlier this year, or I’d be dead right now.
Not that any of this is vaguely interesting. Oh, and I have one more essay due on the eleventh, and two final exams on the sixteenth. And then I’m going to curl up in a little ball until my mother comes to take me home

I'm in the lull right now between final exams next week (one each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and five two-hour concerts in four days this past Thursday through Sunday. I'm also getting over a cold, by which I mean during the performances I had a cold-- the free cough drops they gave out for the singers were nice.... For reasons outside my control I also stayed up until 2:30 am Sunday night, which did not help. But I have actually managed to get my homework done on time for yesterday, today and tomorrow, which I think is quite an acomplishment really, and I've nearly finished the poster part of my research project report... For a different perspective...
Do you realize how lucky you are, still being in the primary learning stage of your life? You only have to complete one version of your assignment--it's creative and, hopefully, a learning experience. This begins the unpleasant time for professors, when we have to grade a zillion of the same thing and try to stay awake doing it. Try not to take out our exhaustion and boredom on the nth student's grade. I learn very little from grading other than the ways I failed to communicate with or motivate my students. But I love the classroom time.

They'd probably be far too self-conscious to even mention it to you, just like they're far too self-conscious to ask you other personal questions right now...even if they do read about the statue of Nerr musings.
Ever since that traumatic experience in high school where my English teacher jumped into a conversation she overheard between Betsy and I with "Oh yes, that's a great idea--I always have my husband help me with my breast self-examinations. While I'm usually pretty anal about grammar and spelling, including discrete/discreet etc, I am quite unabashed about the "and me", "and I" type things. I speak them very naturally and generally file the rule under the "don't end a sentence with a preposition" type of strictly correct grammar that only costs you points with a certain small subset of people that it drives to distraction >.>

If the subject of the sentence (you and somebody) was only you, which would you use?
"Betsy & I are going to the store" is proper because "I am going to the store" is what you would say if only you were involved. You would not say "Me am going to the store". Conversely, "The teacher walked up to me & Betsy..." because the teacher would NOT "walk up to I...."

I tell my students lots of personal things
Given my topic, I'm always telling stories about my kids and myself. And I've noticed that when I get too personal or graphic, it makes them uncomfortable. I told potty training stories (in a child development class) and puberty stories. They're fine with the concepts, but if I tell stories about my own experiences, they squirm. I'm sure they get over it, but it makes ME uncomfortable when they're uncomfortable, and unlike your high school teacher, my students evaluate me at the end of each course and my colleagues read the evals. So I need to be cautious.

Let's see.... my classes just ended today, so that means I have one final project left (floral design) and two, maybe three exams (landscape management, herbaceous plants, and possibly anthropology). I have to wait and see how I did on a paper before I can know if I have to take the anthro final. It's driving me crazy to have to wait.
so... that'll leave flowers, plants, and landscaping. who want's to guess what my major is?

Landscape Architecture
I am a kinesiology major, but I have a student job in the landscape architecture department. Flowers, plants, and landscaping sounds quite familiar to me.
Or you could be interior landscaping... they do that stuff also.

Actually I'm Not Taking Any
I sat out this semester to try and figure out if what I was in school for was what I really wanted. So, I'm just working and trying to write. If I could just get past my writer's block.

one semester short of done. At a non-elite (but pretty good nonetheless) institution.

elite = designer label
You get the same education at a non-elite institution, you just pay less for it and you get less prestige from it. Just like designer jeans: off-brand jeans cover your body just as well but the designer jeans get you noticed more. In a non-elite institution you lack the connections you would make at an elite school. Prestige and connections are worth paying for in some professions like business and maybe public policy or education. Law and medicine, I doubt it. For undergrads, unless it's HarvardStanfordPrincetonYale, it's not worth it.
What many people outside the academy don't realize is that you don't have to be that smart to be a professor. Having persistence is more important. The smartest guy in my grad school cohort was miles ahead of the rest of us in statistics and theory but he couldn't stick with a project long enough to complete it. He dropped out after one year. I was one of the weaker students in my cohort but I'm one of only two (out of nine) who is still in the academy.

I've got a parent who's been in a couple of the Ivy towers in academia...
I'm at a very good state school-->works just fine for what I want to do. I was merely describing my position. It's pretty useful to do law at some of the prestigious schools for certain gigs.

That's reassuring, thank you
That subject line's not meant to be sarcastic. I read it back to myself and it came out that way, so I wanted to be clear that what you said about professors is really helpful. My organic chemistry professor is way too smart to be a good teacher. It's like he makes fun of us for not picking this stuff up right away. Next semester we're going to have a better professor, which I'm looking forward to.
I may not get the BEST grades (although I must say my grades are nowhere near Bad), but I'm most certainly persistent. Or stubborn. I hope that shows through on med school applications. I'm none too good with chemistry, but I -adore- biology and anatomy, and I really do want to fix people, and I think those are the important things.

One left
Had three papers to finish, and I'm just 'looking forward to' my exam on Monday - Latin, so I'm memorizing verbs, nouns, and other parts of speech like a crazy person. Also pigging out on chocolate, because chocolate is the best cure for headaches caused by Latin.

On -er. The suffix. Yes, very interesting. How am I supposed to talk about that for half an hour?! Oh well.
At least the rest of my exams are still some time away, in February/March.

All done!
I finished my last final just this morning! Thank goodness, from now on I never have to take a strictly domestic politics class. The lack of foreign policy almost killed me, I swear. So now I will be free to be annoying around the site again! Huzzah and jubilation!

I had a college dream last night
Usually I hate them, but last night's was interesting. I dreamed I was about to undertake the study of Paiute and Tlingit shamanistic practices as expressed in the textile arts. srsly, I have dreams like that. Why those two unrelated tribes, I couldn't say.
